Susan A. Jenson, age 65, of Pine City, died Nov. 30, 2008, at North Memorial Medical Center, Robbinsdale.
Susan Ann Jenson was born May 15, 1943, at Colorado Springs, Colo., to Elmer and Mildred (Olson) Oveson. She was raised in Ranier, Minn.
On Dec. 16, 1960, Susan was united in marriage to Loren Jenson and they made their home in Littlefork, Minn. Susan and Loren operated a small farm in Littlefork and those times were some of Susan’s happiest of her life. She really enjoyed the farm.
In 1984 they moved to Columbia Heights where they lived for 10 years before moving to Pine City.

Several changes are expected to be made in Koochiching County’s development ordinance.

Koochiching County commissioners Tuesday expressed skepticism about the draft plan.

Changes expected include the addition of maximum densities in five zones and a zone called “rural village;” modification to the subdivision process and shoreland ordinance; and the elimination of a commercial zone, Jean Coleman, of the consultant firm CR Planning, explained to the Koochiching County Board.

Voyageurs National Park will play host to the second annual Women in Winter program Sunday.
Participants are expected to learn about the history of snowshoes and the purpose of different snowshoe styles. Afterwards, if snow conditions permit, snowshoe two miles on the Oberholtzer Trail. Snowshoes will be provided.
The program starts inside at the Rainy Lake Visitor Center and runs from 2-4:30 p.m.

One person attended the Truth-in-Taxation hearing conducted Tuesday by the Falls School Board.
However, no questions were asked during the hearing, according to district Administrative Assistant Sue Karsnia.
The school board has set the 2009 levy at $1.927 million, a 4.22 percent increase from the 2008 levy.

L-BF senior named to honorable mention team as a running back

Littlefork-Big Falls senior Gage Klemetsen is following in the footsteps of his older brother Ian.

Just a season after Ian was named to the 2007 Minnesota Associated Press All-State prep football team, Gage earned the same honorable mention status as a running back on the 2008 squad.

“It was a good year,” Gage said Wednesday. “We played good as a team. That’s all that counted. No fighting.”

It’s hard to fight when you’re pummeling opponents into the turf.

Patton named Player of the Week
Rainy River Community College sophomore Maurice Patton earned Northern Division Player of the Week honors for his efforts in Week 2 of the Minnesota College Athletic Conference season.
Patton, who also earned DJ Player of the Week honors, averaged 18 points and 12.5 rebounds in two games during the Vermilion Tournament. He had 12 points and 10 rebounds in RRCC’s first victory of the season over Gogebic College and added a 24-point, 15-rebound performance in a loss to Itasca.

Backus and St. Thomas confess that improvisational show could take many back to Catholic roots

Backus Community Center Director Ward Merrill said the coming presentation of “Sister’s Christmas Catechism — The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold” will be the most expensive production that Citizens for Backus/AB has brought to its stage thus far.
And, he adds, that many believe the show’s entertainment value will be similar to that of “Church Basement Ladies,” presented on the Backus stage by the Border Concert Association in 2007.

Thumbs up to hunters, nonhunters
Thumbs up to hunters and nonhunters alike for making this firearms deer season one without incident, locally. No hunters, or nonhunters in the woods at this time, were reported lost or injured in Koochiching County. And thumbs up to county law enforcement, which was ready to answer a call for help if needed.

Gretchen Olson and Adam Ahlstrom, both of Blaine, announce their engagement and upcoming marriage.

Gretchen is the daughter of Calvin and Joy Olson of Littlefork. She graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in business and is currently employed in marketing at Andersen Windows.

Adam is the son of Mark and Joyce Ahlstrom of New Brighton. He graduated from Bemidji State University in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and is currently employed in clinical research at ev3 Endovascular Inc.

The American Red Cross

The American Red Cross will again sponsor a national “Holiday Mail Call” program in 2008 as it did in 2007. Last year, the Red Cross reviewed and distributed over 600,000 cards to wounded service members at hospitals around the country and overseas. This year the Red Cross wants to expand who is reached with the holiday greeting cards to include not only wounded warriors, but all service members and their families, as well as veterans. The goal is to reach 1,000,000 persons this year to show appreciation for their service and wish them well over the holiday sea
