Arden Lee Johnson went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 22, 2008.
He was born March 20, 1927, in International Falls, Minn.
Arden was preceded in death by his parents, seven sisters and two brothers.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Johnson; five daughters, Helen (Larry) Bieringer, Ruth (Curt) Kurtz, Alice (Rodney) Geving, Marci (Shawn) Pritchard and Heidi (Dave) Mengis; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Richard “Dick” W. Phillips, 71, of International Falls, Minn., died Nov. 20, 2008, in Yuma, Ariz.
He was born May 27, 1937, at St. Olaf Hospital, Austin, Minn., to Fred J. and Virginia L. Phillips.
He attended Columbus grade school and St. Augustine High School in Austin. He graduated in 1955 from St. Augustine and went on to attend St. John’s University from 1955 to 1957.
Dick enlisted into the United States Army in 1957 and was honorably discharged in 1960. He served in the Army Security Agency as a Morse code radio operator. He achieved the rank of sergeant.

County to hear update on Forest Legacy project

The Koochiching County Board is scheduled to hear an update about a Forest Legacy project located in the county Tuesday.
The county board meeting is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. in the courthouse boardroom.
At 10:30 a.m., Art Norton, Itasca field representative with the Nature Conservancy, is expected to request a letter of support from the board regarding phase four of the Koochiching Forest Legacy Project.
Phase four involves including 13,500 acres located in southern Koochiching and northern Itasca counties as part of a larger project of 141,000 acres of conservation easements.



Littlefork City Council hears updates during brief meeting

The Littlefork City Council heard several reports during a brief meeting Thursday.
Councilors were told the city has not received reimbursement from its insurance provider for damage that occurred in Littlefork during a June storm, according to Littlefork City Administrator Mike Fairchild.
The council also heard that the plans for construction on Aspen Street planned for next year include installing a storm sewer, road bed and gutter, and paving the road, according to Fairchild.
The council also heard that construction on the ambulance facility is nearly complete, according to Fairchild.



Moe finishes up career at UND

Erik Moe (FHS ’03) played his last college football game Saturday and was directly involved in the University of North Dakota’s 34-31 overtime victory over border battle rival South Dakota.
Moe was the long-snapper on kicker Brandon Hellevang’s game-winning 33-yard field goal.
“It’s been fun. It’s been good. I met a lot of cool people and getting paid to play football, it’s pretty awesome,” Moe said Sunday about his football career. “Getting your school paid for to play football, it’s pretty awesome — doing something you love to do.”



Basketball: Voyageur women collect first win

Rainy River collected its first win of the season Saturday with a 57-49 victory over Vermilion in the Vermilion Tournament.
The win, which was also first-year head coach Tim Myles’ first victory, came on the heels of a 51-38 loss to Gogebic Community College on Friday night.
“It’s nice to get that monkey off their back and get that win,” Myles said.
Asha Johnson led the Voyageurs with 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists against Vermilion, while Amanda Clark (12) and Kayla Cluff (10) also finished in double figures.

Hockey: Voyageurs win SDSU tourney

Rainy River Community College won three games over the weekend to capture the championship of the South Dakota State Tournament.
The Voyageurs beat North Dakota State University 5-2 in the opener and edged the University of Minnesota Duluth 2-1 in the semifinals before taking down St. Scholastica 3-1 in the championship.
The tournament hosted the top eight teams from the western half of the U.S., and the four teams playing in the semifinals were the same four teams in last year’s national tournament semifinals.



Hockey: Bronco girls suffer tough defeat

The Broncos fell behind early Friday and suffered a 7-0 loss on the road to Silver Bay-Two Harbors-Cook County.
The Mariners (1-1) scored three goals in the first period, two in the second and two in the third.
Taylar Nelson started in goal for the Broncos but was pulled in the first for Keanna Carlson. Nelson went back in to start the third. Carlson finished with 17 saves, while Nelson tallied 14.
“We missed a lot of opportunities. We didn’t capitalize,” Broncos coach Bruce Elson said. “We just couldn’t get things going.”
