While that plea from an old TV commercial has become cliche, the phrase effectively illustrates the terrifying situation in which an elderly or chronically ill person could find themselves.
And the potential for other health crises in an elderly or disabled person, or anyone who has had surgery, also puts those living alone in jeopardy.

The National Weather Service reports that this weekend should be wet with rain and snow.
Approximately 1.37 inches of rain fell on Wednesday, with another half inch by mid Thursday morning.
“The Falls was the bullseye of the precipitation, especially on Wednesday,” said Kevin Donofrio, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Duluth.

Voyageurs National Park staff remind hunters that hunting, trapping or possessing game of any type or manner is prohibited on national park lands and all waters within the boundary of the park.
Park rangers enforce the hunting and trapping prohibitions under federal regulations, which carry a maximum penalty up to $10,000 and/or six months in jail for misdemeanor violations, and $20,000 and/or five years in jail with forfeiture of hunting equipment for felony violations.

Rainy River’s 2007 national championship makes the ’08 squad hungry for another

That aroma coming from Rainy River’s hockey team isn’t poorly washed equipment. It’s the smell of a national champ.
With eight players returning from RRCC’s national championship squad from a year ago, the 2008 Voyageurs are ripe with experience and leadership.
“Our team just had really good camaraderie,” RRCC sophomore captain Stevie Langford said about last year’s squad. “We got along really well.”

Northland, who lost Thursday to Kittson County Central 54-14, was the only participant from the eight-team field making its first appearance. Four teams — L-BF (11-0), Verndale (10-0), Houston (11-0) and Clinton-Beardsley-Graceville (11-0) — enter undefeated.

Amendment will raise the sales tax by three-eighths of 1 percent

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota voters have said yes to raising their taxes.
They approved a constitutional amendment Tuesday that will raise the sales tax by three-eighths of 1 percent to provide a new pool of funding for outdoors, environmental, arts and cultural programs.
The Clean Water, Wildlife, Cultural Heritage and Natural Areas Amendment required a ‘‘yes’’ from a majority of all voters to pass. Leaving that box on the ballot blank counted as a ‘‘no’’ note.



Local leaders to attend SWCD district convention

Eldon Voigt, Al Linder, Pam Tomevi and Justin Berg, supervisors and staff of the Koochiching Soil and Water Conservation District will learn about wetland issues, water quality trading, working to restore impaired waters, and more at the 72nd annual meeting of the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
The meeting will be held Dec. 7-9 at the Crowne Plaza Riverfront Hotel in St. Paul. This year's theme is "SWCDs — Meeting the Challenge."



RLSC donation will help DNR education efforts

The Rainy Lake Sportsfishing Club recently purchased a 100-gallon acrylic aquarium for the local Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Station in International Falls.

Termed the “tailgate tank”, the aquarium is designed to fit on the open tailgate of a pick-up truck.

According to Jeff Eibler, DNR assistant area supervisor and the aquatic education liaison for the Falls Fisheries Station, the tank will be used primarily to display fish for educational programs.
