Mini Me Quilters event teaches the art to a new generation

The art and tradition of quilting was revealed to 21 West End Elementary first graders last week.
Kim McDonald brought students from her class to a spring quilting retreat at Thunderbird Lodge. The special “Mini Me Quilters” event was offered by Quilters on Rainy Lake.

Late rally propels Bronco boys to victory, By JOE KRAUSE, Sports Editor

COOK — With occasional drizzle and standing water on the field, the Cook Little Gophers entertained the Falls High Broncos baseball team Tuesday afternoon at the newly renamed Dan Swanson Field in Cook.
The Broncos came away with a 15-8 victory, but trailed for most of the game due to mental errors.
“Our kids didn’t think the field was playable and our play reflected that,” Broncos head coach Vic Heinlen said. “The field conditions effected us in the first part of the game both offensively and defensively.”

Blessed to be part of a caring community

To the editor,
On behalf of the United Way Koochiching County Advisory Board, thank you Borderland for wholeheartedly supporting “Hooked on Talent” 2008.
What an exceptional evening. The talent was outstanding and the community’s response was overwhelming. It was also wonderful to see Backus Auditorium filled to capacity. And if that wasn’t enough, the evening’s proceeds benefit charitable agencies in Koochiching County.

Use sense in bill intros

Lawmakers are wasting their constituents’ trust and money when they introduce bills they don’t intend on getting passed into law.
More than 8,000 bills were introduced at the Minnesota legislature this session. Less than 300 bills are likely to be sent to the governor.
The other 7,700 or so bills were introduced by lawmakers who were doing someone a favor with support of a cause or making a personal statement on a particular issues. Some of these bills were introduced despite the author's understanding that it would never get enough support from fellow lawmakers to move forward.
