Pot Will Never be Legal for Any Reason

In the 4th century, Hippocrates (the father of medicine and the Hippocratic Oath) wrote extensively about the medicinal and therapeutic relief that could be derived from marijuana.

“It” was settled a long time ago: Marijuana is a medically useful drug. Some of it’s property’s are absolutely unique in the world of natural remedies. Okay, if the question’s been settled, why then, the continuing controversy? Why don’t the scientists and medical doctors quit lying, and fess up? Some have. They wash dishes and drive cabs now.


Holiday closings

In observance of Memorial Day, The Daily Journal will not publish Monday and the office will be closed. Normal hours and publication will resume Tuesday.
In addition, most local, state and federal government offices will be closed, as will many private businesses, including banks.

RECAP study begins: Proposed plasma gasification facility could be first in United States, By LISA KACZKE, Staff Writer

A feasibility study for a proposed plasma gasification facility was kicked off Thursday with players gathering to explain the project to the public.
The feasibility study is expected to examine the economic and environmental impacts, as well as the technology, of building a plasma gasification facility in Koochiching County, which could be the first facility built in the United States.


Borderland construction season begins, By TOM LAVENTURE, Staff Writer

Construction season is just beginning and the International Falls and Koochiching County have several big projects planned for the summer.
However, officials note, oil prices could impact the amount of blacktopping done as asphalt prices also rise.

Doug Grindall, Koochiching County engineer, said bids were recently awarded to companies that will handle two major projects that will take the remainder of the season and likely into next year.


June 1 deadline for children’s arts

All children ages 7-18 who register will get a part in “Cinderella,” a Prairie Fire Theater Production and Art Exhibit that will be presented at Backus June 21.
In addition, children ages 5-18 are invited to participate in an art workshop by the Northland Art Society. Rehearsals for the play and the art workshop will be held Monday through Friday, June 16-20. The hours are 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. for those who participate in both the theater and the art program.
Some of the art enrichment includes working with watercolors, ceramics, and print making.


Late inning heroics help Vikings nip Polar Bears, By JOE KRAUSE, Sports Editor

CLOQUET — The Littlefork-Big Falls Vikings softball team entered the Section 7A Softball Tournament as the no.1 seed. The Vikings won its first game of the tournament on Tuesday at home 14-4 over Deer River and was in Cloquet on Thursday for a game with the Floodwood Polar Bears.
L-BF used some late inning heroics to sneak past Floodwood 2-0.
The two teams were engaged in a pitchers duel with neither team able to score in the first five innings of the game.


Bronco girls dethrone Esko

COHASSET — An old sports adage states that champions die hard. For six innings the Esko softball team, the defending Section 7AA champs, was proving that holding a 7-5 lead over the Falls Broncos. But with the game on the line, the Broncos responded with a barrage of runs which turned a tight game into a blowout as the Broncos scored 15 seventh inning runs to overwhelm the Eskomos 20-8 Thursday afternoon.


Bronco golf teams compete in Section 7AA Tournament, By JOE KRAUSE, Sports Editor

The Falls High Broncos girls’ golf team was in Biwabik on Monday for the first round of the Section 7AA Golf Tournament.
The girls played at The Quarry at Giants Ridge and fell short of their goal of a top-four finish, falling three shots short of the fourth and final qualifying spot in the 13 team field.
The event was won by Hibbing with a score of 352. Virginia took second place with a 363 followed by Duluth Marshall at 389 and Hermantown who rounded out the top four with a 391.
