Stella Rose Sandbeck, 77, died peacefully at her home Thursday, May 29, 2008 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Stella was born March 6, 1931 in Fort Frances, Ontario to Peter and Malania Zeleny.
She was united in marriage to Donald W. Sandbeck on Nov. 26, 1949 in International Falls, where she had resided since.
She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church. She was also a member of Catholic Daughters of America in her younger years.
She worked for George M. Crow, M.D. for over 18 years until she retired to help take care of her grandchildren.

As family and friends watched, 96 seniors graduated from Falls High School Thursday.
Receiving their high school diplomas is the end of 13 years of formal education, Superintendent Don Langan told the crowd.
But “education is seldom a solitary endeavor,” he said, noting that the community is a part of the process.
It is his sincere hope that in the years they have spent in education, they have grown academically, socially, morally and spiritually, he said, and the time has been more than only credits and hours spent in a classroom.

The International Falls City Council is scheduled Monday to hear a report from a task force which conducted a feasibility study on increasing Falls Ambulance Service to include advanced life support.
The council meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers at the Falls Municipal Building.
The change in the ambulance service from basic to advance life support would mean patients in critical condition could be transferred from Falls Memorial Hospital to a trauma hospital by ambulance, rather than only by helicopter.

Travis Phillipe and Maria Porter have qualified for the State Golf Tournament next week in Jordan.
Travis Phillipe is the co-champion of Section 7AA boys for 2008.
Travis shot a two round total of 151, with rounds of 71-80, for the first place finish.
Maria Porter qualified with a two-round total of 185, with rounds of 96-89 which put her in a tie for the fourth and fifth individual qualifying spot.
The state tournament will be June 5 and 6 at the Ridges at Sand Creek Golf Course in Jordan.

COHASSET — After a two-year absence, the Littlefork-Big Falls Vikings softball team is heading back to the State Softball Tournament.
“The girls are playing really well and we are proud to represent Section 7,” Vikings head coach Mike Imhof said.
The Vikings came into play on Thursday having to win two games over a tough Mesabi East Giants team to advance to the tournament.
L-BF never trailed on the day winning game one 12-4 and game two 3-0.

DULUTH — The Falls High Broncos baseball team, after playing error free ball in Wednesday’s win over Hibbing were plagued by errors in an 8-0 loss to Cloquet in Section 7AA baseball Thursday afternoon at Wade Stadium in Duluth.
“We were not mentally prepared to play ball tonight,” Bronco coach Vic Heinlen said. “We made four errors in three innings not to mention the mental errors,” he said.

Trout anglers will have more opportunity in Borderland, thanks to a restocking effort by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
Staff from the International Falls DNR Fisheries Office last week restocked trout into Trout Brook near Big Falls.
The fish, from a hatchery near Remer, measured from 8-12 inches long and were a little larger than are usually stocked, explained Jeff Eibler, DNR assistant supervisor.

East — Crawlers have started producing walleyes during the day on the north-end sand breaks in 12 to 18 feet. The evening bite is best with bobbers and leeches in six to 12 feet on the reefs from Big Point and farther south. Work the docks for smallmouth bass.

A pact that would protect the Great Lakes water from diversion to other states needs full support.
This week, Wisconsin Gov. Jim Boyle signed a treaty that prevents dry states from taking water from the Great Lakes. Supporters fear the population-rich and economically wealthy southwestern states will look to take massive amounts of water from the Great Lakes as their water sources become arid.
