Kids show what it takes to play golf, By TOM LAVENTURE, Staff Writer

Having fun and learning can come in any kind of weather.
At least that what the 31 young people, ages five to 12, that took part in the Falls Country Club junior golf clinic this week have shown their adult trainers.
The kids started swinging at 8 a.m. each day. Dressed in thick coats with gloves and rubber boots, they practiced like champs until lunchtime in weather that would keep all but the most diehard golfers away from the course. The kids just exchanged their cold, wet weather gear for new garments each day and never let it bother them.

County’s mortgage failure lower, By TOM LAVENTURE, Staff Writer

Borderland foreclosures lower for a reason

Koochiching County doesn’t have the lowest number of foreclosures in the state, but it is among the lowest, and area bankers will tell you that this is no accident.
They credit traditional lending practices and low housing demand during a decade-long trend that saw record mortgage failures nationwide.

Ranier Council to meet Monday

Ranier City Council is expected to take action on a variety of issues when it meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Ranier Community Building.
The council is scheduled to hear a recommendation from its buildings, streets and grounds committee to seek an order for condemnation of a cabin belonging to Shirley Borgen. Another recommendation will involve the purchase of two outdoor garbage cans for the deck of the community building.

Nature’s challenges

Borderland residents should feel blessed as they watch news reports about flooding and severe weather in southern Minnesota and other parts of the Midwest.
Clearly, no one wants to experience damage to docks and boathouses, nor watch as shorelines are eroded and damaged by rising waters.
However, no homes or businesses, as far as we know, are now being threatened in Borderland. But elsewhere, people are dying and homes and businesses are being damaged and crumbling into lakes and rivers.

High water, By LAUREL BEAGER, Editor

Rising water levels in Borderlands lakes and rivers is both good and bad for fish, wildlife and habitat

While humans may be very troubled and inconvenienced by high water levels this spring in Borderland, wildlife and fish are pretty well adapted to those fluctuations, according to area resource specialists.
“Fluctuations occur in the natural environmental all the time,” said Kevin Peterson, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources area fisheries supervisor.
Lee Grim, biologist at Voyageurs National Park agreed.
