Officers elected to VFW posts, By TOM LAVENTURE, Staff Writer

Five officers of the Falls Veterans of Foreign Wars — Peter Graham Post No. 2948 were recently elected to serve additional posts with the Eighth VFW District.
The officers were elected in May at the VFW Loyalty Days district convention in Grand Rapids.


Parapet work delays Backus roof project, By TOM LAVENTURE, Staff Writer

Work is progressing with a slight delay in replacing the approximately 20,000 square feet of roof on the two historic buildings of the E.W. Backus Jr. High School and the Alexander Baker Elementary School complex.
The delay is not as much the wet weather, though that is a factor, but more from an unexpected issue with the parapet on the Alexander Baker building, according to Ward Merrill, interim executive director, Backus Community Center.
A parapet is a low protective wall along a roof.


Williams appointed Littlefork mayor

Shane Williams, councilor for the city of Littlefork for nearly four years, was appointed interim mayor on Thursday.
His vacant chair on the Littlefork Council will be filled by Glenn Weigold, which the council approved Thursday.


Falls School Board to hold meeting

The Falls School Board is expected to authorize accounts payable during a special meeting at 7 a.m. Thursday in the Falls High School cafeteria.


Falls VFW earns split, By JOE KRAUSE, Sports Editor

Starting a stretch of six games in four days, the Falls VFW baseball team split a doubleheader with Virginia.
The Falls won game one 4-3 and lost game two 10-3.
“We played really well in the first game,” Falls head coach Roger Jerome said. “The second game was kind of lethargic which is what you see in VFW. The back end of VFW doubleheaders are generally never well played ball games.”


CVB study on Koochiching tourism, By TOM LAVENTURE, Staff Writer

Koochiching County has many destination points for recreation and beauty and some are better known that others.
Several leaders of independent tourism offices are preparing to conduct a study on rural tourism with the goal of sustainable tourism development.
Following through on other rural tourism studies in Minnesota, area’s Convention & Visitors Bureau is taking the first step toward getting participation from area communities to conduct an effective study to better market the potential of all attractions in the county including cold weather tourism.


Need is questionable

The Heart of the Continent Partnership seems like a benign idea, but we question the need for such a pact among such a diverse group of organizations.

St. Thomas Knights of Columbus 1540 meet

St. Thomas Knights of Columbus 1540 gathered for their monthly meeting June 12 at the KC Clubroom with Grand Knight Tom Lucca presiding.
Elections were finalized and new officers are: Grand Knight, Rick DeBenedet; Deputy Grand Knight, Roger Jerome; Chancellor, Les Hendrickson; Advocate, Mike Wild; Treasurer, Scott Eldien; Warden, Bob Phillips; Recorder, Tony Johnson; Inside Guard, Tom Mayor; Outside Guard, Bob Rapaway; Trustee, Tom Lucca (three years).
Thanks were extended to the nominating committee: Scott Eldien, Rick DeBenedet, Tony Musich, Tom Lucca, Les Hendrickson and Terry Schultz.
