County tables proposal for quarry

A plan to allow campsites at City Beach was approved Tuesday, while a decision on a proposal for a rock quarry near Clementson was postponed to July.
The Koochiching County Board voted on four recommendations from the Planning Commission at its meeting Tuesday.
The Koochiching County Board approved in 4-1 vote to allow six campsites with a maximum of two tents each at City Beach. Board Chairman Wade Pavleck voted against the motion.

County reacts to city’s request for help from Pawlenty

A Minnesota Counties Insurance Trust attorney appointed to represent Koochiching County in the Minnesota Highway 332 issue has withdrawn from the case after being challenged by the city of International Falls.
The city sited MCIT attorney Paul Reuvers’ past representation of the Koochiching Economic Development Authority as a conflict of interest.

Jason Hardwig’s art is displayed in a building where he, his mother and his grandmother attended school.
Hardwig, an area resident who recently completed his master of fine arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, will hold an exhibition of selected works at the Backus Community Center from now until July 2. A free public reception will be held on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. for a chance to meet the artist and enjoy refreshments.

The rising cost of fuel has impacted local families and businesses, however, the extent of the impact differs depending on many factors.
Business is still good for Rainy Lake One Stop, but a manager reports that people are now more innovative in finding ways to save money.
“A lot of people are finding alternative methods in coming up here,” said Bill Landmark, fishing manager. “They are carpooling instead of coming up alone, and instead of towing a boat up here they are renting one when they get here.”

Dave Cronin of Miller McDonald accounting firm is scheduled to be in attendance at City Hall to present the 2007 audit report.
Administrator Mike Fairchild said surveying has begun as the joint city and county water main project draws near.
Fairchild also reports that the proposed language of a new 911 signing and address ordinance will be presented to the council for approval.

With the high school softball season over, a pair of local athletes were able to compete with the best in the area.
2008 Littlefork-Big Falls graduate Kelly Hams and Falls High junior Danika Stelton competed in the Inaugural Northern Stars All-Star Softball Game last week on the campus of St. Scholastica in Duluth.
The pair played for the Northern Stars and won both games by a score of 1-0 over the Duluth-Area Stars.

With the sun shining and the course in great shape, over 100 golfers hit the links at Falls Country Club for the Randy Holenko Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday.
“We had a great mix, which is what it’s all about. Younger, older, men, women, expert players and beginners,” FCC Golf Pro Tom O’Connell said.



FHS seniors complete STRIVE program

Four Falls High School seniors were recently recognized for completing the 2007-08 STRIVE program at an awards picnic at City Beach.
The picnic was organized for the STRIVE students and their families.
Sophie Bolstad, Ashley Piekarski, Desiree Cope and Josh Stougard earned grants. Attendance and participation awards went to Scotta Turner, Miles Arnold and Ryan Barg.

BSU students receive scholarships
Jaime LeDuc, of International Falls, and Gina Lumppio, of Big Falls, were selected for departmental scholarships for outstanding academic achievement at Bemidji State University.
LeDuc, a senior majoring in aquatic biology, received the Charles S. Holt Memorial Scholarship from the Department of Biology.
Lumppio, a senior majoring in technical illustration/graphic design, received the Kraus-Anderson Scholarship from the Department of Technological Studies.
