Remembering Ranier: New book by Bernie “Spike” Woods captures essence of small-town childhood, By FAYE WHITBECK, Staff Writer

Carried within most adults, but tucked beneath many layers is an indelible imprint of their childhood neighborhoods.
Neighborhoods of the past were often the universe for growing kids. This was certainly true for many who grew up in the decades preceding 1970.
Within the framework of only a few blocks, children ventured out from the nest and got their first tastes of the world. Through the landscape and the people they encountered, many experienced the first reflections of themselves.

Challenges of democracy

To the editor:
To get an idea of how much our emporer cares about democracy, look at what happened to such in Haiti not so long ago.
President (Jean-Bertrand) Aristide was banished first to the Central African Republic, then he was given refuge in Jamaica, which lasted until Secretary (Condoleeza) Rice threatened that government to oust him immediately or "face the consequences".
All of this because Aristide was being "undemocratic", even though he was elected and reelected there by a 94 percent majority. So much for democracy in Haiti.

Idea deserves consideration

Making outpatient care for veterans available in Borderland makes sense on a variety of levels.
Allen Kruse, the county’s new veterans service officer, has proposed exploring the ability to provide outpatient care at a facility in Borderland under the Veterans Administration.
While Kruse notes that moving forward with the idea is a huge undertaking, it’s a worthy cause. Especially when more than 1,400 veterans live in the county.

Summer reading is underway

June is here, school is out, the lilacs may bloom before the end of June and this weekend I’m planting my tomatoes outside. It must be summer. That means summer reading is underway. Look What’s Cookin’ at Your Library and be sure to swing into the library and pick up a bag full of activities and information about summer reading for any child interested in participating. The first program will be Wednesday, June 11, at Smokey Bear Park at 6 p.m. Come hear stories, play games and engage in general silliness as we party through the summer.
