Edward Michael Kuldanek, 62

Edward Michael Kuldanek, International Falls, Minn., passed away Saturday, June 7, 2008 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was 62 years of age.
Ed was born in Chicago, Ill., March 28, 1946 to Edward Vincent and Louise Christine (Polhorsky) Kuldanek.
Ed served in the United States Army with a tour of duty in Vietnam from September 1966 to September 1967. He was a Medical Corpsman in the 15th Medical Battalion of the 1st Air Cavalry Division.
Ed was united in marriage to Mary Kathryn Safford in 1969.


Bryan S. Smart, 16

Bryan S. Smart, 16, died from complications due to leukemia Thursday, June 5, 2008, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth.
Bryan was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Virginia.
Despite being sick, Bryan enjoyed playing guitar, drawing, and spending time with family and friends.
Bryan is survived by his parents, Wayne Smart, Gale Smart, and sister, Briana.
Bryan was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, MaryAnn and Erland Erickson.
Memorial services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, West Chestnut Street, Virginia.

NorthStar Hospice butterflies available for August release community celebration

For many, the release of a butterfly for their loved one is a symbolic letting go; a release of love toward the light; the permission to be free.
The third annual release of monarch butterflies through the hands of family and friends of those taken by cancer will be held at 1 p.m., Aug. 17 at the Holiday Inn in the Falls.


Flotilla coming through Fort Frances, By TOM LAVENTURE, Staff Writer

The 2008 David Thompson Brigade flotilla of 160 canoeists will paddle through the Rainy River district to Pither’s Point in Fort Frances on June 27.
The visit is a part of a historical reenactment that journeys 1,389 miles through four provinces in 63 days.
The brigade is a bicentennial commemoration of explorer David Thompson (1770 – 1857). It is one of many events from 2007 to 2011 that celebrates the documenting of the Howse Pass in 1808 and exploration that would eventually establish a trade route from Fort William to the western end of the Rocky Mountains.


County to discuss KEDA funding

The Koochiching Development Authority Board is scheduled to discuss funding for a partnership between all cities located in Koochiching County when it meets at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the courthouse boardroom.
The regular Koochiching County Board meeting is scheduled to follow at 10:15 a.m.
During the regular meeting, an update on the state’s shoreland rules, administered by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, is scheduled at 11:10 a.m. The DNR has scheduled a public hearing to consider changes to the rules at 6:30 p.m. June 25 at the Holiday Inn in International Falls.


Community orchestra to present concert

The Borderland Community Orchestra, under the direction of Katherine Williams, will present its spring concert, “Lands of Legends,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Backus Community Center.

Defending champ Gelo misses first place by inches

Defending champion Falls High senior Raphy Gelo took second Friday in the boys pole vault at the Class A State Track and Field Championships at Hamline University in St. Paul.
Gelo took second with a jump of 14 feet, 6 inches. First place went to Erick Romsdahl, of St. James, with a jump of 15 feet.
Senior Eric Solo took ninth in the boys discus throw Saturday with a throw of 145 feet, 5 inches and Bronco freshman Alicia Hendrickson took 14th place in the girls pole vault with a jump of 8 feet, 6 inches.

The Littlefork-Big Falls softball team had its bid to play for the Class A State Title end Friday morning when Maple Lake scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings to edge the Vikings 3-1 in the semifinal game. In the third place game, the Vikings trailed Wabasso 7-0 in the seventh inning. The Vikings put together a rally but fell short losing 7-5 with the tying runs on base.

Consider the consequences

Cutting $15 million from funding designated for airports in a late move of the Minnesota Legislature was unwise.
Such moves deserve more consideration of the consequences before they are set in place.
The money is important to the operation of airports like the Falls International Airport, which is operated by Local Airline Service Action Committee. Already, five other cities in the state have lost LASAC status in recent years, making it difficult for those airports to stay viable.
