Marcia Felix, 99

Marcia Felix, age 99 of Rainycrest Long Term Care, 550 Osborne St., passed away on Friday, July 11, 2008 at LaVerendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ontario.
She was born on May 20, 1909 in Skala, the Ukraine, to the late Michael and Pauline Momotiuk. Marcia came to Canada with her family when she was very young, and the family settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba.


Ronnie James Frank, 60

Ronnie James Frank, 60, passed away suddenly Sunday, July 6, 2008, at his home in Cologne, Minn.
He was born Oct. 26, 1947, to Littlefork residents John and Zona Frank.
On Sept. 26, 1968, he married Renae Bystedt. They had two sons, Derrick James and Aaron Jeffrey.


Wind pummels Littlefork, By LISA KACZKE, Staff Writer

Gusts of wind measuring up to 75 miles per hour hit Littlefork Friday morning, causing damage to trees and buildings.
The National Weather Service began receiving reports of damage along Highway 217 from Littlefork to Ray at 10:05 a.m. Friday, according to Steve Gohde, observing program manager at the National Weather Service in Duluth. Reports were given by the Littlefork ranger station, law enforcement and a weather observer in Littlefork.


County prescription drug discount program widely used

Residents use discount cards to save money on prescription drugs

During the first 17 weeks of the Koochiching County free prescription drug discount program, Koochiching County residents filled 472 prescriptions resulting in an average discount of 29.33 percent per prescription, according to County Coordinator Teresa Jaksa.


Suspicion of Border Patrol along Gunflint

ALONG THE GUNFLINT TRAIL, Minn. (AP) — A highway accident involving a U.S. Border Patrol agent, that killed a local doctor, has inflamed tensions between residents in this far northern corner of Minnesota and the federal agents that patrol the nearby international border.
The ranks of Border Patrol agents have swelled since the 2001 terrorist attacks, making them a more visible presence in places like the Gunflint Trail, the 57-mile paved highway that snakes north from Lake Superior into the wooded Boundary Waters wilderness.


KEDA to discuss FTZ site Wednesday

The Koochiching Economic Development Authority Board is scheduled to hear an update on its foreign trade zone site at its meeting Wednesday.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the KEDA office, 305 Third St.
Dave Serrano, of Arro of the North, is developing a conceptual plan for the FTZ, located east of International Falls. Serrano told the board in June that he has completed a wetland delineation and topographical survey of the FTZ.


Bible school offers more than classroom

First Baptist Church hosted the "Son Harvest County Fair" Vacation Bible School last week. More than 50 children came each night to hear stories, play games, have snacks and learn about Jesus.
The week was topped off with a giant fair, complete with carnival games, a bouncing castle and horse rides.
Workers transformed the garage into a barn backdrop for opening sessions each night. The kids did nightly crafts including making strawberry jam. The final night featured horses, rabbits, ducks and chickens.

With horizontal rain on Saturday and wind gusts approaching 30 miles per hour on Sunday, 114 golfers battled the elements and each other as Falls Country Club hosted the 54th Annual Smokey Bear Invitational this past weekend.
“I’ve spent the last three days looking at the radar on the internet,” FCC Golf Pro Tom O’Connell said. “It has an unbelievably difficult three-day stretch.”
The weekend is the busiest of the summer at FCC with the Larry Ross Memorial on Friday and the Smokey Bear on Saturday and Sunday.
