It is common to think of quilting, cooking or gardening as skills that mothers pass along to their daughters.
Chainsaw carving may not come to mind at first, but Amanda Campbell has taken to the unique style and business of her award winning carver mother.
Cindy Servis, of Chainsaw Carvings in International Falls, has practiced woodburning, airbrushing and sculpture since she was young, and now incorporates those skills into her chainsaw carving. She learned after stopping to watch another artist on the roadside.
Since 2005 she has won honors in three competitive events.

The Land of the Lady Slipper Festival is a community project focused on bringing the community together, says Linda Zahn who is helping organize the festival this year.

Camp, hike, fish or swim — recreation is on the rise and it’s important for those entering natural spaces to be aware of the impacts they have on the landscape.
From 7-8 p.m. Friday at the historic Woodenfrog State Forest Campground Refectory near Lake Kabetogama, Voyageurs National Park Naturalist Samantha Palm will present, with hands-on techniques, a workshop intended to teach “leave no trace” ethics.
Participants will hear about how to minimize the impact on the landscape and still enjoy the outdoors.

You may have noticed more reader contributions in The Daily Journal in the recent year or so.
We have a few people who regularly contribute. Many of these submissions are photographs they have taken and want to share with fellow readers.
We have made a conscious effort to make you, our readers, feel more comfortable about submitting material for publication.
After all, who know best what kind of photos and stories our readers want and will enjoy than other readers?

To the editor,
On the Fourth of July my husband and I visited your community. I write to commend the citizens and their leadership on the beautiful and welcoming image International Falls projects.
It is neat, clean and invites visitors with the wide boulevards and lovely hanging baskets. Homes are enhanced with front yard gardens that communicate a pride not only in their homes but also in the city itself — a desire to make International Falls a great place to live.

To the editor:
Over the years our family has camped at a number of city campgrounds. We have fond memories of the communities who invited us into their ‘backyards’.
My husband and I often lamented over the fact that International Falls did not have a comparable city campground. When we heard about the planning committee for City Beach, my husband gladly agreed to be part of it.
The committee had moved thoughtfully and slowly through the process of enhancing the area. Significant improvements have been made, including the presence of a host couple who maintains a watchful eye.

With the season quickly drawing to a close, the Falls VFW baseball team was in Ely for the Ely VFW Baseball Tournament over the weekend.
The Falls took second place with victories over Ely and Eveleth and a loss to Duluth East in the championship game.
“These kids play Ely and Eveleth in high school ball every year and it’s nice to beat those teams,” Falls head coach Roger Jerome said. “It’s fun being down in Ely. Ely has in my opinion, the best ballpark in the area. What more could you ask for? We had 80 degree weather, sunshine and baseball, it was pretty fun.”
