Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Notice of Proposed Classification of State Forest Lands in Koochiching and Eastern Itasca Counties with Respect to Motor Vehicle Use
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) proposes to classify State Forest lands located in Itasca and Koochiching counties with respect to operation of motor vehicles. The proposal is to assign all State Forest lands and other forest lands under the authority of the Commissioner to one of the following classes:

Motion by Councilor Rognerud to approve minutes of the regular city council meeting of July 21, 2008. Motion seconded by Councilor Jaksa and carried unanimously.

[Kay & June Uenida were mother and daughter who had been released from an internment camp to work as domestic help for the Dahlbergs and went with them to California at the end of the Rainy Lake season.]

Charlotte Porter, of Ray, graduated with a bachelor of science degree, with honors, in elementary education and Christopher Hogan, of Ranier, graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration at the conclusion of spring quarter at Bemidji State University.
Marissa K. Hanson will attend the University of St. Thomas in fall 1998. The 1998 Falls High School graduate received an $850 recognition scholarship.

Joyce “Bonnie” Engleson, International Falls, Minn., died Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, at her home.
She was born Oct. 20, 1925, at her parents farm south of Dawson, Minn.
The former Joyce Crosby was united in marriage soon after high school to Ruben Winge.
In 1947 she was re-married to Buster Anthony with whom she had two children; he is now deceased.
She later moved to International Falls in 1960.
In 1962, Joyce was married to Paul Engleson.
Her hobbies included gardening, collecting dolls and spending time outdoors.
Evelyn A. Trompeter, of Ranier, Minn., died at her home Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, surrounded by her loving family. She courageously fought a battle with cancer for the past four years.
She was born June 26, 1929, at International Falls.
Evelyn was a member of many clubs and organizations, including Falls Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, NARFE, Zion Sunday School, Kiwanis Golden K’s, Ranier Girls Club, X-Ray Club, Whist Club, an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, Sarah Circle and spent 19 winters in Arizona.
She was employed as the postmaster of Ranier.
Rural addressing signs
The contractor began placing new rural addressing signs for all residents in the rural areas and some cities last week. He is placing small flags so the utility companies can determine if their lines will be impacted. The Koochiching County Sheriff’s Office requests cooperation from the public in not removing these signs.
Women of the Moose
The Women of the Moose will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the downstairs clubrooms.
Concert in the Park
A story published in Thursday’s edition about a NEXUS Center should have said the program is being handled on the U.S. side of the border by Customs and Border Protection. In addition, the NEXUS program will not replace the I-68 boater program. Instead, a NEXUS card can be used in place of the I-68 which will continue to be offered. Also, a NEXUS lane will be designed at the border crossing.
Journal Staff Report
The Koochiching County Board is scheduled to meet with a representative from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to review road and trail designation in state forests in Koochiching County when it meets Tuesday.
The regular board meeting is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. in the courthouse boardroom.
In committee at 1:30 p.m., the board is scheduled to meet with Jim Rupert, DNR project leader for a road and trail designation project the DNR has been conducting in the county the since January.

International Falls Bass Tournament master of ceremonies Chip Leer noted that this year’s tournament presented the greatest challenges to the anglers and that the victories were hard earned and well deserved.
He could say the same for the many fans and entertainers that ignored the drizzle and cooler temperatures to make for a weekend of fun and excitement away from the water as well.
