Warroad pastor endorses McCain, testing IRS rules

WARROAD, Minn. (AP) — A reverend in Warroad is testing the prohibition against preaching politics from the pulpit.
The Reverend Gus Booth told the Warroad Community Church on Sunday that not only should they vote for Republican John McCain, they should also campaign for him.
Booth was participating in an event called ‘‘Pulpit Freedom Sunday’’ that was organized by the Alliance Defense Fund, a group of conservative legal advocates.
Booth says McCain’s positions line up more closely with Biblical teachings on homosexuality and abortion than do those of Democrat Barack Obama.

In the end zone with Jim Johnson: It comes down to tonight for the Minnesota Twins

Impulse buys can usually be associated with a candy bar, a classic DVD or if you really want to get in trouble — a 60-inch plasma television.
But how about a Minnesota Twins game 300 miles away?
Count me in ... twice.
Before the Twins surprised everyone with their “remember where you were during the three-game sweep” of the White Sox last week, I had weekend plans to mow for the last time before winter and get some hours in at a local part-time job.
Then Tuesday happened (9-3 Twins — 1 1/2 games back).
And Wednesday (3-2 Twins — 1/2 game back).

Input on draft ordinance needed

To the editor,
The words “shall” and “will” are instruments that government uses to coerce, regulate or modify the behavior of the governed. When government uses “power words” to control what we do on our owned or rented land, it is called a zoning ordinance.

From The Editor’s Desk: Weighing the requests

A story on our Business Page today does something that we normally don’t do: Reveal the winners of a raffle.
In this case, the raffle was a national Bud Lite promotion and one of Borderland’s own, Sean Bahr, was the winner of an all-expense paid Caribbean cruise.
The Journal’s policy calls for winners of raffles promoted by businesses or an organization to be published as an advertisement.
