Imagine my surprise when I pick up the Daily Journal for the first time in years and I find a picture have a half empty glass of wine adorning the front page! As a recovering alcoholic, I find it VERY offensive that the taker of that picture thinks that this is "news". I find it even more offensive that the taker of that picture even finds this ENTERTAINING!! It has been a long time since I have read this newspaper in print, but I have been a supporter of this website for quite sometime. I usually keep up-to-date on the website. I was even more excited to get my hands on an actual physical copy and this is what I find on the front page?!?! It is a sad, sad day when this community considers THIS particular picture news. Or even sadder yet, that this community had no say whatsoever in this picture and are forced to accept this as a label. I am ashamed for the Daily Journal. I am ashamed for the photographer in question.

Back to page topIt never ceases to amaze me what trivial things tend to offend people.
Now we should call in the "PC Police" because the Journal printed a picture of a vessel full of liquid?
Apparently the image was photographed well, and printed clearly enough to be easily recognized. Art and Critics... it'll never change.
It seems that the rights of the Majority are increasingly being stomped on by the wishes and whims of the Too Easily Offended Few. Better not report anything controversial... someone might get mad.
Better pull out all the advertising as well. I know people wasting their lives away playing video games (sold at local retailers), and frankly some clothing, food, cars, cologne, electronics, books and various other items (also advertised by local retailers) I find downright offensive.
I don't believe the publication is now, or ever was community owned. That only exists in Communist countries. Or wait, has Freedom of the Press been abolished and no one told us?
To insult the Journal and Staff because you don't like a picture is poor form.
I bought the paper in...
Back to page topI bought the paper in question, thought that the picture was beautifully photographed. One of the attractions of our fine little paper is its front page; I suspect that a good front page helps sell newspapers. At the end of the day, the DJ is a business; it has to attract circulation in order to sell advertising. If everybody agrees with our writer -- who clearly is not a customer, then it is a bad decision. If they agree with SOG, then it might be a very good decision. Avoiding pictures or mentions of wine in this non-Muslim world could be a difficult venture methinks. Almost every Still Life painting in the world has a glass of burgundy sitting next to an orange and some grapes. Most churches have at least one Sunday where they break bread and drink wine [or facsimile]because that was the wish of Jesus Christ, the same guy who turned water into wine as his first recorded miracle. The problem probably isn't wine; it's the lack of moderation. I agree with the original writer that America has a drinking problem just like it has an obesity problem, but the picture in question had nothing to do with either.
I congratulate the DJ for making a fine aesthetic decision. If it had shown someone finishing off a beer bong, that would have been a different message.

Back to page topI find it funny that you refer to yourself as a "recovering" alcoholic but all you can see in that picture is alcohol. Not the contrast in color, nor the reflection of the trees or the beautiful water.
Maybe you should stop judging the photographer and look at your self.

Back to page topI am married to a recovering Baptist -- no that is not tongue in cheek -- so I had the same reaction to Adamsdaughter's letter as she did to the alcohol. I am not sure which has cause more heartache in our world, strict fundamentalism or hard alcohol. I do know, however, that fundamentalists are more likely to run a jet into a skyscraper while alcoholics are the ones who will t-bone you at the next intersection. Again, moderation in alcohol usage and in religion -- both worth considering but difficult to do.

Back to page topI think that Mr. and Mrs. Al, as we like to call them, are doing a wonderful thing by delivering alcohol. It keeps a lot of people from driving drunk to the liquor store.
I know myself, and a many bunch of friends, who have stupidly made the choice in the past to go on a beer run at 9:30pm after having a few. Even though we may not have been above the legal limit, it's still irresponsible of us to do such a thing. Trader Al's has given us a way of preventing such stupidity.
