Getting involved in our city

No votes yet

It sometimes takes a jump start, sometimes just a cup of coffee, and sometimes a little push from a friend with common interests.
There are many projects going on in our nice little city, by our city council and various other groups, all who silently toil for our benifit and reward. These mostly silent worker bees sometimes need our help and often times would like to hear of any ideas we might have to help them do their work better or more efficiently for our benifit. Sometimes these workers bees, that silently toil in our behalf, just need a little reasurrance that they are doing their work in a satisfactory manner or that we appreciate their efforts.

The Mayor, I have noticed, has signed on to this Daily Journal site repeatedly for over a week, obviously desiring for someone, anyone, to offer comments or suggestions or even criticism of our cities elected members in their efforts on our behalf. I can not see those folks that are calling Mayor Mason or E-Mailing her but in no case since she has logged on to the site have "I seen" a single request or comment offered to herself.

It has been a well known fact that I have probably been the greatest antagonist the Mayor has had to contend with in the last two years and still she offers herself to this blog site for any comments and suggestions I and all of us might have to offer herself. Why is it that we citizens, that often times complain of local government and local volunteer groups and their efforts won't at least try to help ourselves by rendering opinions when asked for our input.

The Mayor and many other silent toilers are doing a great job, our city looks great, and all these folks are working for our benifit but we don't seem to care or want to take the time to thank them or offer suggestions they seek to do an even better job. There are many irons in the fire and many projects started and as yet unfinished that are for our benifit but we don't seem to care.

Thank you Mayor, thank you to all those folks toiling in the basement of Forestland distributing food in the food pantry, thank you to the folks in Backus who toil to keep and perserve our old school building, thank you to all those that toil in the Good Samaritan center, thank you to all the church groups that work on our behalf, thank you Janet and thank you to all those many others that toil on our behalf, in silence, for our needs.

Sometimes things are going so good for ourselves that we just forget to say thank you. Volunteer, offer suggestions and comments to those that work for our benifit, register to vote and vote but especially offer a word of "Thanks" when you meet someone that you know is one of those worker bees. What other pay do they receive for their efforts then our thanks.

As a suggestion that would...

As a suggestion that would be a useful act to help make our city look nicer for ourselves and visitors I offer a suggestion to the city council and to the folks who call this city home.

Why don't we start a program somthing on the order of the "adopt a road" or "adopt a mile" within our cities limits. Residents could "adopt a street" or "adopt an avenue" or various groups in town ie. clubs, churches, boy scouts or businesses could gather as they felt the need arose and just walk their street, avenue or area with a garbage bag and pick up trash on the side walk and streets. The project would be of great benifit to the Mayor's beautification plan and be a good civic minded project we might rally around for our own good. Sorta like meeting on the street with a purpose and to say hello. Maybe, it doesn't have to be an adopt a street sorta thing but just proclaim a particular day or weekend to be a "beautification day" and have some city trucks drive the streets to pick up the bags for disposal. A good time for this might be a week period or a weekend period just prior to the 4th of July.

These kind of things will not go unnoticed by those that are not so inclined to pick up trash and such and soon you will see many "new faces" out there assisting in your efforts. It tends to put a bug in the minds of "some" of those that might just carelessly throw something out the window or such, when they see their neighbor picking up something that might be "their"trash.

Just an idea--What do you think??

Maybe you could train city workers to bend over and pick up something. How many times does the truck that sleeps three drive by the same refuse without stopping to pick it up. There are people whose job it is to maintain and ensure that the city is not a piece of c rap. By insisting that taxpayers volunteer to do a paid person's job, you further enable the sloth and validate their laziness.

Thank you for your comments....

Thank you for your comments. Yes, maybe we can train city workers to bend over and pick something up, if necessary. We also might train the entire city to bend over and pick up stuff, if necessary. There will always be workers everywhere that don't or won't do their jobs. In the mill, in government, in K Mart, in Menards and even in our own homes there are and will always be workers that won't do their jobs. But, I am not a very firm believer in the American axiom that "its not my job" or "thats your job not mine" kinda mentality. Besides, those city workers that might have been hired to pick up trash, are doing so because "we" are careless in putting it there or allowing it to occur.

Nobody, especially not myself, is "insisting" that anybody volunteer for anything. Volunteer work just doesn't seem to be volunteer work when someone insists on its being done. Never the less, a program to do something on the order of a city wide clean-up by ourselves would seem to be a good thing to help ourselves and develope a civic sense and mindset for our own well being. I would call such a mentality, if I had to give it a name, "Civic Pride". If there are city workers responsible for doing a clean up, that there not doing, and I could well imagine that might be true, then those workers will be more inclined to now do that job they were hired to do because of the peer presure that will come to bear by the rest of their neighbors and residents in "their" town. Without regard to enabling anybody to do their job, such a clean-up holiday would still be good for us all even if a few were enabled to remains sloths.

We used to have more of this kinda "Civic Pride" but we seem to have lost it or modified its meaning to conform to the soreness we now seem to have in our backs and minds. Anyway, I took it as a matter of great pride in our city and in the people that live here, when last summer I overheard tourists admiring how nice our city looked and how nice we all got together for our class reunion and were having so much enjoyment in just enjoying each other. I might add that nobody "insisted" that we get together and have fun, it just sorta happened.

Great input, folks. We all...

Great input, folks. We all have a lot in common. We want our city to be the best it can be. Special thanks to those who take personal pride in making our community more beautiful.

Our "fight on blight" is an ongoing campaign. Your council is expanding it this year...to determine ways to make the community more attractive, (going beyond clean up). We have received considerable favorable input regarding our new mural, and there has been discussion within our strategic planning meetings that we consider establishing more murals. My personal favorite spot...the back of the "dull looking" Minnesota Travel Information Center (the building on the corner of 4th street and 2nd avenue). Wouldn't it be neat to have a mural of the "old water falls" painted over the entire back of the building? MN/DOT owns the building, and we have made contact to them regarding the idea.

The Project Pride group has done a great job with the banners and flowers again this year. Of course, our city crew works hard to hang the banners and keep the flowers watered all summer - and we all should be proud of their good work within Smokey Bear Park and the municipal square. The county does an incredible job with the court house grounds too. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the Koochiching Mens' Garden Club...what a great job they do as well. There are many more folks out there working hard to improve our city. THANK YOU SO MUCH. We're all in this together.

As Anton mentioned, I'm here...please feel free to submit your ideas through this forum, through direct e-mail to me, phone call or personal visit.

Yours in respectful community service,

Mayor Shawn Mason
