Chamber Insult

I was visiting with a couple of business people this morning and heard something interesting. It was such an insult to a local business, that we felt everyone should know about it. Seems that our Chamber decided to order flowers for their banquet online and borrow containers from a local florist. We have 3 floral shops in town and the Chamber had the nerve to order online instead of through one of our locals. How do you feel about this insult?? |

Back to page topThe reason the chamber ordered the flowers from online is that the local florist does not make a profit when the chamber orders flowers locally and so the chamber is not taking money away from the florist, according to Betsy Jensen, president of the International Falls Chamber of Commerce.

Back to page topIf the Chamber had thought this through, it may have realized the florist considered it good will and good advertising. I would have thought with the change in leadership at the Chamber, their services would have improved but I guess not. Perhaps an "online Chamber" should be formed!! I would hope the existing members of the Chamber will remember this "slip in judgement" (other terms come to mind) when going to renew their membership!

Back to page topI have received a very cordial and satisfactory response from the Chamber concerning the flower purchase they made. The information given by the DJ was accurate in that little or no profit is made by the local shops contacted, at least one local shop, being a member of the Chamber, was in fact contacted on this occassion and on other occassions and the "new" Chamber organization is committed to fostering a good and healthy business climate in the area.

Back to page topI still think that the Chamber should have ordered the flowers locally. They should have paid a little more just so they would be supporting local business. How in the world is this town ever going to get on its feet if the businesses themself (which is what the Chamber is made up of) buys from out of town. Maybe all of the Chamber members should sell their merchandise at cost so that locals will shop here. Doesn't make any sense. This banquet is to honor the local businesses. What a joke.
