I wish I never came back!

At first when I returned to I Falls I was very excited about being back up here and coaching at the college. But since I have been back up here things have changed. I was told by people who I will not name that things would be OK. There were certain things that were somewhat guaranted to me that made the move from Louisville to I Falls benifencial to me. Now I could have easily stayed in Louisville. I gave up plenty of opportunities back home to come up here and help the men's b-ball team at RRCC. But once I got up here things started to change and the tihings that I was told over the phone while back at home never came true. Now I did my job as an assistant coach and I even am taking classes at the college in which I am a better than average student. But for what ever reason I am not coaching at RRCC anymore. I feel that there are people who just didn't want to give me credit for the changes that I made to the men's team and the style of play. Now my coaching style is intense. I also feel that there are a few players on the team that are soft hearted and didn't want a strong demanding coach but one that they can push over or one that is not very demanding. But anyway I am the way that I am and I don't have a problem with voicing my opinion. When I played basketball on the Division 1 level in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC), my coaches were demanding and demanding maximum effort out of all of the players. It was their way or the highway. I am sorry I Falls, I guess this college RRCC is not ready for an intense hard nosed coach that is sort of a perferctionis. I just wasn't meant to coach up here but there are other schools that would appreiciate a coach of my stature.

Ya know, I always thought a coach was supposed to be a bit tough. Teams don't excel if the are just putting forth a minimum effort. How many Champions have achieved greatness by floating along? Not many.

If you were let go just for being an enthusiastic Coach attempting to develop a winning team, that just doesn't sound quite fair. Especially when you relocated to take the job.

Any chance of coaching at the High School? Recreational ? The rest of the job market looks pretty bleek around here currently.

You don't want to coach at the high school either. The problems with the college are the same as the high school. It is very tough to coach any where that the admin bends to who ever complains or has a buddy that needs a job instead of supporting their present teachers and coaches.

It is a wonderful thing to see the depth of support that the previous writer has for our struggling Community College. I am sure that his generosity of spirit and deep understanding of the dilemmas it faces will be used by college administration as it seeks to promote the continuance of this little school in the little town at the end of the highway to nowhere. Congratulations on hitting yet another home run. And congratulations on the freshness of your argument; most people haven't heard or read such an uplifting and refreshing point of view on this site for years.

TLJ,

You just made my day!! You referred to me as "the previous writer" and not "the racist" that I thought my entry would entice you say. I would say I "got a hat trick" -vs- a homerun. I would take it that you were a firm believer in the RRCC Footbal team, even though it was clear that the program and "It's players" were draining the college of it's resources and viability! So, here they are again, with much of the same, and I would be willing to bet, it's just another failed program, leading to the college's demise. I have nothing to gain or lose if the college goes away, but there ARE others (including you) who have the requisite knowledge to know when it's time for the College to take a new direction. It's this same thinking that is ruining the City of I-Falls, at the end of the highway to nowhere. Sure, you may say that I don't know what a failed administration and program looks like, but then there are those who think they know that the entire Bush administration was a failure too!! I guess only the "Bush haters" know when something is a lost cause!

I haven't a single thread of sympathy for you, D.J.

Anyone who has a college education and still can't properly use punctuation in their writing, should really rethink the time they have spent. I understand that sometimes typos happen. I even understand that one person can't be expected to know everything, but you would think that someone who's a role model, a coach, a mentor for these students, these athletes, would at least have the decency to learn how to use the English language better.

Don't get me wrong, I feel your pain. You're coaching a bunch of kids who are out for the free ride. Dreamers, not performers, are when you're dealing with. These students don't give a crap about you, about the program. They think because they could hustle any fat kid at their local courts, they could play college ball. They can't even play crappy college ball. They have no discipline, no goals. All they have is the afternoon practices, showing off who can dunk better and make the longer shot.

Frankly, if you want to shape these kids up, make their lives a challenge. Make it tough for them to play anything but the bench. The ones that will want to play will meet your demands. But don't give up, that's only going to make you seem more like them. If the coach quits, then they might as well too.

If sympathy gets down to punctation, Agent 47, then we will fall short. How should this sentence be punctuated? "Don't get me wrong, I feel your pain." I call it a comma splice.

Also, you ended a sentence with a preposition.

You're expecting a man without a college education to be able to know those things? And my lack of attention to when instead of what, I already covered that topic in my post. Look for "I understand that sometimes typos happen. I even understand that one person can't be expected to know everything".

DJ,
Yep. Welcome back home. Too bad you didn't get those promises in writing before you crossed the City Limit sign. Maybe the College office doesn't have a Fax machine yet. I'd type one descriptive sentence about this "town" if I could. But, I am not allowed to as it would be considered "profane" and I would be banned. Instead I'll just say to you - B.O.H.I.C.A. If you get my drift. So, good luck in your search for employment here. I must also say that I have not been blogging here too much because this site seems to have become a place for every religion touting, political know it all, racial slur throwing orator and grammar monitor in the entire U.S.A. DJ, I truly hope in spite of what has happened since you returned home doesn't end up causing you to define your ability as a Coach in a negative manner. It's them, not YOU. Good luck man. Happy Holidays to you and yours. Better and Bigger things are waiting for you.

Icesicle, Sorry you feel this way...
"this site seems to have become a place for every religion touting, political know it all, racial slur throwing orator and grammar monitor in the entire U.S.A.", yet all through history mankind has been divided and had their own opinion on these very same issues and on every level of society.

Dear Coach Thomas,
I'm sorry that you were let go from Rainy River. I am currently a student there and though I never actually met you, you seemed like a nice person. I thought it was a raw deal the way you were let go...but didn't get the full story until reading your blogs. I thought you should know, all of the team members that I talked to liked you and your coaching style very much, and had only good things to say about you. They liked the way you challenged them and helped them improve. All of the b-ballers that I was friends with were upset when you were fired. Even though you didn't get the chance to finish the season, your coaching made a good impression on them, and I'm sure they learned a lot from you. I'm sorry that you received the welcome that you did, both at the college and on this blog. It upsets me to see people so close minded as to get angry and rude to someone who is obviously so excited to come back to this town. It was an honor to go to school with you, for the little bit that I did, and I wish you well at your next coaching job. I'm sure someone will recognize the talent you have.
