I currently live in Englewood,Ohio outside of Dayton and would really like to eventually move to the Falls area. I had wanted to go there for quite some time and finally went in 2004 and I loved it. I loved Minnesota in general but the Falls for some reason just seemed homey. My aunt came with me and she also agreed. I am not sure when I will be able to move but I want to as soon as I am able. I dont have any family in Minnesota so that might be difficult but something tells me I should atleast give the Falls a try because I just have a feeling I would love living there. I have family in Wisconsin Rapids,Wi which is only about 8 hours away and they would be the closest. Thats really the only obstacle I can think of right off the bat is I would not be super close to any family but I am on Disability so the job market wouldnt really affect me. I just hope I could in some way, shape or form help the community out. Even if only by spending money there. Another thing I think would be neat but is never really mentioned is being right across the river from Ontario. I hope I havent bored anyone too bad with my rambling I just figured I could get better information from locals than anyone else. Thanks in advance.
You will probably see...
Back to page topYou will probably see several people post negative things about our area... But give it a try. I have moved to other parts of the US and ended up coming back. I was born here, I work here, I live here, I'll die here. I love here. Every community has its problems, but they also have their charms. If you're outdoorsy, you'll love it here. Swimming, boating, hunting, sking, snowmobiling, biking, hiking, fishing just to name a few of my favorite things, can all be found here. And if you're not into the outdoors, our area is just full of crafters and movie goers, and those that like to sit at one of the local coffee shops and chit chat. I think you'll find this to be a VERY friendly community with lots of people willing to help each other. This is definately home... a great place to raise children... and just a wonderful place to be. Good luck. I look forward to getting a new member to our community and may I be the first to welcome you home.

Back to page topThank you very much for your reply and for welcoming me. I dont feel like I will contribute much to the community but I would really love to be there. When my aunt and I were there we couldnt believe how nice everyone was. We just wanted to hug everyone! I like the outdoors eventhough I am limited on what I can do because of my hips but I love swimming and I love hiking too. I know it probably sounds crazy but I just had a feeling that I wanted to live there and that feeling started long before I ever even went there but once I went there the feeling got stronger. I can really see my self there. I like being in smalltowns and what I like about the falls is that it is small but has everything I would want or need. And it would be far from my family here in Ohio but not as far as many other places. Especially when I think of people who leave their country and move where they dont know anyone. This would be much closer than that. I also love snow and winter. I get tired of hot summers. Now I just need to work on saving money and go from there. I wanna take another trip to Mn but if I wanna move there maybe I should just save up for my move.

I really love International Falls, but the fact of the matter is, there is nothing in the Falls. We moved here in 1999 and we felt the same way you did when we came, and it took a very short period of time to change our minds. We are now selling our house and relocating somewhere where we can do something other than "go out the back door and back into the front door " for entertainment, and to really do things big, "do it again.
To anyone whom has been involved in local politics elsewhere, this town will give you ulcers. There is nothing to look forward to in this town unless you are independently wealthy and love to leave International falls weekly to do your shopping in another town.
My suggestion, move to Bemidji or Virginia, and drive to the Falls occasionally
I agree with icebox56649,...
Back to page topI agree with icebox56649, there is a bunch to do here in the summer - if that is what you call this year's season. The limited amount of jobs and the limited amount of pay they want to give you makes it difficult for ordinary folks to get by.
Be prepared to spend a mint on fixing up an old house, and another mint heating it this winter. This is an old town, with old houses that have been (for the most part) barely maintained. You won't recoup the money you put into it either. There is a reason houses are listed at one price and sell for thousands (and sometimes tens of thousands) less.
Oh and let us not forget about the one thing that I was warned about when I moved here - the stench of the mills. I have to close up my house completely during the reverse winds and pray that the temperature doesn't get too warm inside before I can open it back up again. And then just as I get the house opened up again, I have to close it when the stench creeps back into my part of town.
It is a beautiful town and we have met a few nice folks, but all in all most of them are not that friendly. The lakes are very beautiful, lots of hiking and things to visit. But like icebox said, live in Virgina or Bemidji - visit the Falls.

Back to page topGotta agree with icebox and gardennut, this is a great place to VISIT. Be forewarned. Been here since 1989 and have met a few very terrific friends, the rest of the town has left a bit to be desired. Since your heart is set on moving, just make sure that you have enough for a return fare, just in case things aren't as you expect.

Back to page topMoved here a number of years, trying to raise a family, work, and be involved in the community. Only to watch the town , schools, and local organizations slowly die. Drive to the lake and I feel good but drive to town and I get depressed. Looking to move to a more progressive, open minded town in the near future. I. Falls has a lot of potential but unfortunatly few have enough vision to look beyond Boise, the small town rumors or their hunting shack to make anything happen. We have met some wonderful people and hope the friendships we have made will continue for a lifetime. Even when we are gone.

Back to page topGenerally, residences who love and enjoy our community are here because of what they can do outdoors. Your happiness in life is based on what you find of importantance. Sounds like family is important to you, if so, maybe relocating closer to Wisconsin Rapids, WI might be better for you. Don't get me wrong, I love where I live, but its because this is where my immediate family lives, and my home was built thirty-some years ago by my in-laws, and I have wonderful garden out my kitchen window. So you could say, I love it here because this is were my roots are.
