Grade school playing fees for sports

Filed under:

No votes yet

Just learning that my 2 grandkids each have to pay $100 bucks to play basketball is very hard to understand. $35 for sign up $17 for a t-shirt and a box of candy they have to sell for $48. Now one of them is in first grade and won't even know which end of the court is which. How can this even be justified----the cost of elec. that would be on for a few extra hours or the heat for the Falls Elem gym that is never on? Also how do they justify charging admission to 5&6 year olds for the high school games? I just don't get it. Other schools that we have gone to don't even think twice about letting them in without charging. It's just too crazy to understand. I'm sorry I'm just not getting it.

International Falls is...

Back to page top

International Falls is shrinking. Therefore, the tax base is also shrinking. Many programs and functions were created and funded while International Falls was a larger community or with grant money. (Which is why I have a love/hate feeling about grants. Politicians love taking grants and creating things that are usually unsustainable in the future...a different forum topic.)

Back to my point...all of these things require funding. As the community shrinks, the programs and functions do not shrink as quickly. Sometimes, they cannot shrink at all (building/park/road maintenance, et. al.).

Politicians are quick to create new 'things' because there is political glory in doing so. Maintaining existing 'things' is not as visible or politically rewarding. So, things that need maintaining get put to the wayside, including infrastructure and 'other' things like youth activities.

You and I encounter similar situations all the time in our personal lives. However, since it is our own money, we are usually more responsible. After all, when it comes to financial security for you and your family, you cannot get voted out of office. Just an earful from the wife.

Since the basketball association cannot find funds to subsidize the costs then they have to do what any other business would do...pass the cost along to the consumer. I am sure the association has a treasurer...you could ask him/her about the cost.

Thank you paradox, they say it's good to vent every now and then. I was just wondering if anyone else out there thought this was alittle overboard with grades one thro six.

Where I live most of the year, our youth sports associations team together and have exclusive rights to pull tabs in all local establishments within the school district.

All proceeds from the pull tabs go directly to subsidize the overall cost of youth sports. In addition, they also use those funds to assist lower income families. Last year it generated about $108,000.

I see no reason why this wouldn't work in International Falls. It would surely be a way to tap outside money and bring it into the community.

Rec hockey used to have pull tabs but I am not sure if they still do. It would be nice if there was something for all teams.

Back to page top

I experienced "sticker shock" last year when I offered to cover the cost of my two grandkids when they decided to play basketball. The youngest was in first grade at the time. However, once I understood what I was paying for, it wasn't quite so hard to swallow. The rec fee is $35. The $17 covers the cost of a reversible jersey - not just a "tshirt" - which the child uses each year until they outgrow it. My grandkids will probably get 2-3 years out of theirs. I had four kids who played all sorts of sports all through school and this jersey deal sure beats paying 10-12 bucks EVERY year for a little tshirt that was faded, worn out, washed out, and too small by the end of each season. The $48 for candy is just that - you sell the candy you get your $48 back. So your real out of pocket cost is $52 IF you need a jersey = $35 if you don't.

Back to page top

I've gone through sports with all of my kids. Then they moved onto college sports!! And, honestly, the $35 is money very, very well spent. (You think $35 is bad, wait for high school and college.) NONE of my kids got into drinking and drugs. ALL of them were great students. I remember lots and lots of mouth guards sitting on my window sill. These drove me nuts until I taped a note to the window that said, "SOMEDAY THESE WILL ALL BE GONE... And I will miss them." And, boy is that ever true. Thank you for "breaking down" the cost dlspry. Heating the building and janitors take money. Oh, just an FYI: Remember to treat the grade school coaches with respect. They are there every weekday after working their regular full time 12 hour shifts and they give up all their Saturdays for games. Anytime they go out of town for tournaments, they pay for their gas, meals, rooms etc. out of their own pocket. They do this all for FREE...and, for the love of the game. Next time you see a grade school coach, let them know how much you appreciate them. And, remember, we're all broncos.

Back to page top

I think it's ridiculous to expect young kids to peddle candy to help cover the cost of sports. And $48 worth? That's a LOT of candy! What's the actual cost of the candy before it is marked up to $1? Why not just charge that amount as a fee and get rid of the peddling?

I guess I just experienced my own feeling of sticker shock recently when I signed my child up for a sport and also need to vent a little bit. But what are you going to do when you're kid really wants to play and gives you that "Mommy, please?" look. And the added exercise and social interaction is good for them... especially in the winter. Then there's the added value of learning the importance of sportsmanship and teamwork. It's almost like you're stuck; grit your teeth, pay the fee, and end up with a kitchen drawer full of candy (that you don't want your 6 year old going door-to-door to sell).

Believe me I know the importance of school athletics from the grade school on up. There is just something about the cost for these younger ones. Lets say if 50 kids sign up that would be $5,000 for a month -month and a half of using the school, thats alot of money. I guess if there is a treasurer if they had an attached sheet to the fill out form for joining stating what the cost cover it would help in the shock. I wouldn't take this away from these kids for nothing but it was as others stated abit of a shock.

If you're anything like me,...

Back to page top

If you're anything like me, six-shooter, you like to know exactly where your money is going. I'm a stickler for budgeting and we know where everything goes... right down to the last penny. Maybe your idea of getting a clear break down of the expenses would help ease our shock! lol :o) Knowing exactly what all of the money is for makes it easier to rationalize the expense.

And that's not to say that our kids' enjoyment isn't reason enough, so I don't want anyone to misunderstand. Playing sports teaches valuable lessons and provides entertaiment and exercise, so I'm ALL for it... it would just help to have something a little more specific than "sports fees." And get rid of that darn candy! lol Or at least come up with an option for people that aren't interested in selling it! lol :oP

Back to page top

This is my last year too pay sports fees.
i have gone through it with my other two, and the third is my last. yes they are costley, but if you think the of the time the coache's spend with your child it is worth it in the long run.
Football fee is $175.00 dollars before the first game is playd, and that is right around the time you just get done spending money for school stuff. So yeah it does take a big crunch out of your pocket book.
But being this is my childs last year of school he will have the memorys of a life time. not too mention lifelong friendships.
im gonna miss not washing the football gear, even though it seems like i go
through a bottel of spraying wash a week
and the smell of the wet bag well that is a diffrent story all together. yuk. is all i can say.
It also keeps them out of trouble and being on a team the learn so much. and i know the coach's care about each player they call too see how they are, and check on their grades too make sure they are passing. So yeah it is worth it in the long run.

Back to page top

But they put a cap of $500 for the year. Lot of good that does if you only have 1 child in sports. I paid $100 for 7th/8th grade football, will pay $150 for a winter sport and another $150 (I think that is what the cost was last year) for a spring sport. And now they have no grant programs to pay for the kids that cannot afford to be in sports. Even if a kid gets free lunch, they still have to pay 50% of the fee. Guess you need to have rich parents in order to be in sports. And the kids that need to actually have something to do to stay out of trouble can't afford it. I know roj is going to say something about the welfare system but that is another subject. It's not the kids fault but they are being punished in yet another way for their parents choices.

Back to page top

Yes. I agree. I look around at the players and have commented that it seems only Boise kids are able to play sports. It is really expensive. When my first two were growing up, I worked two jobs and I always felt guilty. Either I had time or money...never both at the same time. Is there any way we could get a sponsor program going on this site? I will sponsor one girl's basketball $35 entry fee. I'll pay it forward...any other takers? Roj?? Thomas?? It's time we all walked the walk...

MamaG that is great of you to suggest that. I would say contact either the rec director for grade school sports or the athletic director for high school sports and see what needs to be done. Hopefully this will be a good start and some of those less fortunate will be able to play.

It's not only the sports that is out in left feild try the year books, i about died when my kid came home from practice and said that he needed fiftyfive dollars for a year book? no wonder my other two didn't want one , this too me is crazy, you can't tell me that this is right.
"But i suppose if you want one well then you shell it out. "But it's not fair not all kids can afford them and i wanna know what do they do with the left over ones they don't sell?

MamaG a very caring soul you must be. Great idea. Maybe there is something the school could do with that idea. As for selling of the candy bars--maybe they could sell something more healthy such as trail mix or trail mix bars. Even those note pads that they had in the all class reunion bags only they could have the Bronco logo on them.

Another thing also instead of selling candy bars door too door like they do.
why not stickers or lic, plates for our cars ot trucks that say we love our bronco's
So insteadof candy which alot of people can't eat. we could support our teams in that way. too show other towns how we feel about our kids? i think that would also be a great idea.
I know at the football games they sell seat cushions too sit on, and they use too sell mugs too hold your drinks in. something in that area would be better then candy.

I like the idea of stickers for car windows. I see there are hockey ones out there with the Bronco in the middle but I would like to see just a generic one. I haven't seen the yearbooks recently but I can't imagine they are worth that amount of money. Yea they are nice to have on occassions when discussions come up about previous classmates but I can't see spending that much. When my daughter graduated she has never had a yearbook because she didn't want to spend the $40 for one.

Back to page top

That's what I thought Kay. Would it be possible to set something up? Sign up for grades 1-8 basketball is on the 22nd. How would we go about doing this? I would "adopt" a student under the terms that if she started, she must finish the year. (Same rule applied for my own children.) I would love to know that I helped out. There are limited things to do in this town for our young people and a lot of time this leads to "too much time on their hands". Keep 'em busy; keep 'em off drugs. I would invest in one child just to see if it really does make a difference in her life. Can you imagine sponsoring a child and then having her become the next Ivory Latta?? I always hated the candy bar idea. (Only good thing about it is that it falls around halloween so you can hand them out.) What about bronco kazoos? I'd like to hear a whole gym or arena humming to "Diana" someday. Let's get some school spirit back in this town.

I love the idea of Bronco spirit back into the sports world. What ever happened to our mascot? I know when I was going to school, that was one of the better parts of the games. I know we have some kids interested in bringing it back because I have talked to them. Maybe having Mr. Rolando in the AD position will help. I know he remembers the bronco during high school. When I asked Josh Koenig about it, he just kinda blew the idea off. BRING BACK OUR MASCOT
