off peak electric
November 30, 2007 - 10:05am — six-shooter
Having been on off peak for many years now I find that the "off" in off peak means that the electric heat is never on. Yes we have backup which is propane but it's not the same. The electric is a warmer heat more like wood heat and that is the reason we went that route. It shuts off about 6 in the a.m. is off for about 4 hours comes back on for about 4 hrs. shuts off for about 8 hrs then comes back on about 10 at nite. Does anyone see it the same way?

I also have "off peak" heat...
Back to page topI also have "off peak" heat and experience the same "shut off" hours. If I understood it correctly, the rate for "off peak" heat is not as attractive now as if was years ago. My suggestion to you is call your utility company and ask questions about the rates and if the savings on "off peak" justifies if it is actually worth it anymore. I'm guessing that it is not. Please comment back on your findings.
Off Peak for elders. Don't...
Back to page topOff Peak for elders. Don't know if I have anything significant to offer but I was very concerned once last winter when my parents "off Peak" used for heating was shut off. Dad, (92y.o.) awoke to a house very cold and was able to get a wood fire going. Some folks not that old might have had a real disaster with that kind of cold not to mention burst water pipes. Don't know that that kind of power for heating is the answer to some elders heating bills. Its not at all the deal it was. That is of course the objective of the program, get rid of excess heat until you have sobody to buy it, then essentially do away with the benifit or make it no longer a convenient concept to use.
"Off peak can be very...
Back to page top"Off peak can be very inconvenient, specially for families with little kids, you get by surprise that the heat is off, and then what? This happened to me and I got really scared as my kid got a serious could. We decided to get an electrical heater from Maytag parts this way we stopped depending on "off peak".
I don't see how you can be...
Back to page topI don't see how you can be on off peak because you have to have a back up heat in order to have it in the first place.
From what little I have...
Back to page topFrom what little I have learned so far, off peak even tho it isn't like it was years ago is still the cheapest way to go,now anton1965 I believe there is an option that a person can have and that is off peak cannot be off for more than 4 hrs. and not more then 8 in 24 hr period. This might be somewhat helpful for the elderly. Also I was told that the electric is not sold.Heating with wood is the best but now the wood is getting high per cord. I think the cheapest and easiest back up would be propane. With Cenex you can buy ahead at the summer rate and if it is lower when it comes to fill time they will give you the lowest rate. Great company to work with.
We have propane but are...
Back to page topWe have propane but are changing to natural gas. The prices on all of it will keep going up until we are forced to share houses so we can heat with body heat.
Glad to hear the power can...
Back to page topGlad to hear the power can only be off for the 4 hours. Dad really likes the convenience and from what he says the price is reasonable also. I think its to late for propane for the folks house and am trying to talk them into a pellet stove to keep the work and the smoke down for them. Checked their stove pipe from the wood furnace and the pipe is so clogged with creosote the damper won't turn but dad says he will look at it another day. Not easy to tell him what to do but it is a worry. I am now on natural gas in town but am installing a combo corn/pellet stove and plan on burning a mixture of pellets and wood chips. The wood chips I am planning on making myself from waste but have not tried it out yet. If anybody has tried burning wood chips in a pellet stove I would be interested in how successful this was.
Anton65-- For the 4hr option...
Back to page topAnton65-- For the 4hr option you would have to call them and have them switch it out or however they do it. Now I know several people that had the corn/pellet stove and were not happy with it at all and they had one of those brick heat deals put in and they really like that. one friend uses that for the backup on off peak. Will generate heat for 12 or 24 hrs not sure which.
I'll let the folks know...
Back to page topI'll let the folks know about the 4hr deal. Have a question on the brick thing. Do you mean having a brick package installed in the corn/pellet stove worked noticably better? If thats the case then I'll buy the extra brick option for the stove also. I suspect these stoves don't actually produce as much heat as we might need up in this country but they are much cleaner and handier then wood stoves I think. The cost of pellets has increased so much in the last three years I figured a mixture of chips that I made myself, at no cost, might be an answer to the heating cost. I think the answer will be in the humidity level of the chips but we will see. If I can figure out how to make burning the chips work, that certainly would be the answer to heating costs up here as a small chipper machine costs about the same or less then a snow blower and the branches and tops of loggers trees would be essentially free.
Okay - what is the brick...
Back to page topOkay - what is the brick thing?
Anything that does not depend on electricity is a plus up here as far as heat, because sometimes the electricity goes out.
Now what I found out is...
Back to page topNow what I found out is rather sketchy so one would hsve to research this themselves as an option. The brick is a storage unit that has a fan that kicks on when the electric goes off. These are very heavy and would have to be in a basement or if you heat with the floor heat it could be aet up there. They have central ones and individual room ones. They generate heat until your electic comes back on. Now I don't know how you buy them to put with your existing heat but could very easily found out. I don't know if you can shut off your existing heat and then turn the brick one on to heat with then turn heat back on to heat brick and house. If anyone knows would be great if you could share the info. Also Anton1965 if you had a kiln would that dry the wood out enough to use efficiently for heat?
Tnx for the info shooter....
Back to page topTnx for the info shooter. Yes a kiln would work but that requires energy so thought I would air dry my chips. Also, I have info on burning green chips from individual in Vermont who has been able to do this. Lastly, can the off peak power be used for other uses then heating? One thing that came to mind was to use the off peak power to recharge 16-L16HC 6volt solar batteries when not able to do so with the solar panals. This would be especially handy in the winter months.
Anton1965---years ago you...
Back to page topAnton1965---years ago you could have your hot water heater etc. on off peak but now the only thing you can have hooked up to it is your heating system.
Thanks, six-shooter and...
Back to page topThanks, six-shooter and everybody else.
Our family is also looking for solutions to what looks like a really expensive heat season. The brick thing sounds like it might be worth consideration and I'll pursue that further. Lots of food for thought in this column.
Comparing costs, off peak...
Back to page topComparing costs, off peak electric heat is by far the cheapest type of heat you can have. Off peak is 3.9 cents a kw hour and 100 % efficient, this is through North Star Co-Op.
Yes, you have to have a back up, but it still is the cheapest if it available.
You all keep talking about...
Back to page topYou all keep talking about 3.9 cents/kw hr, being efficient. You mean to say, "cost efficient"?? Electricity is electricity. Sure there are more "efficient" ways of producing it, but ....! I have never heard of such a "DUMB IDEA", of turning someone's heat for four hours, in the middle of the winter. DUMB, DUMB, and DUMBER!!!! I say build a nuclear power plant up that way, and you will have all the power you need. Or put up some of those huge windmills. Fifteen of them can power about 5,000 homes (about the population of the area).
This is so very true. Even...
Back to page topThis is so very true. Even with it being off as much as it has been. Found out the no.'s today.
One of the heat brick...
Back to page topOne of the heat brick sources I found was
Steffes ETS. Very interesting concept for storing heat to use later. Just type "Steffes ETS" for data and other units as well. Be sure to check the other items including the "rebate" item. The cost of these units is not that bad. The cost to operate this heating method was by far the cheapest figures shown. Did not actually verify the facts but real interesting reading.
After reading the previous...
Back to page topAfter reading the previous comments, it would seem to me whether the electricity was 3.9/kw or free, if it is still turned off, it is useless especially when it is needed. As far as the comments from roj2000, if he was in I Falls with all his hot air, there wouldn't be a need for heat!!!
sker, Want some hot air??...
Back to page topsker,
Want some hot air?? Go to a City or Country Council meeting!! LOL.... If it wasn't for me on here, you all would have nothing to talk about. I think you all are still back in the "stoneages" with your four hours off peak, (NO HEAT) BS!! Just go back to 55 gal barrell stoves, and go chop some wood. You will keep warm that way! The VNP treehugger crowd now have y'all freezing for hours every day! Now that's technology at it's best!!
I am not sure this is what...
Back to page topI am not sure this is what happened to you but when this business got their free money from the famed KEDA, part of the agreement is the hiring of a number of employees. If they hire and keep them for a period of time and then let them go and rehire it keeps the quota where it is required by the KEDA. This is what happened at the previous call center that went under. I know of a number of people who were hired and let go after a trial period just to be replaced. This keeps the number that were employeed where it is supposed to be. Its hard to explain. This brings up another KEDA business, the new Fish Processing center that keeps asking for 30 employees and as of two weeks ago did not even have a building up and running. I know of several people who applied in November expecting a job before Christmas and I just saw on the work force site that they as of Nov 26 were still looking for 30 people. What gives. Is it hiring or not. I feel for the people who were expecting a job before Christmas. Is is operating or just playing a game. Maybe someone knows what is going on. You just have to go on with your life and figure everything happens for a reason. Good luck.
