Do Not Buy Any Gas Day: May 15, 2007

No votes yet

May 15th is the unofficial national "Do not buy any gas day". Just thought I'd let everyone know.

Which is not a real brainy idea....people are still going to fill up the day before and again the day after....and if the oil companies do feel the crunch for one day, they'll just up the price again to cover it.

How about making Saturday May 19th DO NOT DRIVE DAY. This would be much more effective. I know it is impossible to do that nation wide, but I decided I will not drive that day. Stay home spend time with the family and enjoy a day of no Gas consumption. Who knows maybe we could spread the word, think about it, Spend time with the Family and reduce the profits of the oil Industry.... A Novel Idea.....

That is a wonderful idea. My children and I do a day each month where we do not turn on a television and we never eat anywhere but the kitchen table. Each night my children take turns picking topics to discuss during dinner. What happened to the days where parents actually spent time with their children and knew what was going on in their lives. I do realize that it is harder for alot of parents, but I am a single mother who works full time and doesnt get home unil after 6 pm, so I do know it's possible.

And what did we accomplish?...

Back to page top

And what did we accomplish? So instead of buying gas on the 15th, I fill up on the 14th or 16th! Doesn't sound like I am accomplishing a thing.

Instead how about a national Park Your Car and Walk/Bike to work day (larger communities can add in Public Transit as well). Then and only then does does this whole idea make any sense.

This came from the high school. And, even though you feel, as adults, that this wouldn't accomplish anything, the high school students felt it just might. I simply passed it along. Honestly, if you feel it's a bad idea, don't participate. Sometimes kids just need to feel like they are a part of a bigger picture. It may not help, but what does it hurt?

This did not come from the high school. I received this in my personal and work e-mail and I also heard people talking about it at Wal-mart in Bemidji this past weekend.

Oh excuse me. This INFORMATION came to me from the high school students. It's national--which is what I said in my first statement--that is why you've been hearing it all over. Good grief. Is nobody nice on here anymore?

Back to page top

SO WHAT if it doesn't make a major impact on the oil companies? If you participate, at least you are being part of a big issue. Taking a stand and letting your feelings be known about this ridiculous gas situation. It doesn't have to make huge financial impact to get noticed! :o) And at least you can feel a little more pride in yourself for taking part.

I also liked the suggestion of a Park Your Car Day. I don't drive unless I absolutely have to (I understand that people don't always live within a decent walking distance of the bank, stores, P.O., etc), but there are a lot of people out there that hop in their car to go 6 blocks to the Post Office! (Sorry, personal pet peeve here :oP )

MamaG, unfortunately this way of communicating lets people release their inner jerk (not accusing anyone at all, really). No face to face means there are no consequences for a bad attitude. It's such a shame that people tend to lose their manners on here and forget that REAL people are behind the monitors, with REAL feelings, deserving REAL respect. On the other hand, sarcasm and jests don't really transfer well, so it's possible for people to get the wrong idea about a post.

Marty...you have it absolutely right. I wasnt trying to come across as sarcastic...sorry MamaG if I came across that way...anyways, I had to gas up today because my vehicle was totally empty and I had to go to work and didnt want to walk in the rain and a gas station attendant told me that people who didnt buy gas today thought they were so smart because they thought they were hurting the gas companies, well they werent because gas is going up tomorrow. I guess the gas company get the last laugh.

Just curious as to how many of you did not buy gas yesterday. I did not because I did not need any and probably won't for another two days...17 mpg. filled up on the 7th.(not bragging those are highway miles...I want the 26 highway miles they promised when I bought the darn Merc.)If I would have needed the fuel I wouldn't have bought simply because I really want to see people stand up and protest for what they believe in. As I have said before Blacks with their million man march, Mexicans and their rallies, Whites...ah humm??? I'm not meaning this is just a white issue it is not, it effects all Americans just on different scales. The larger your income the less it effects you.
I overheard a Wal-mart employee say she works one day for gas and two days for childcare each week. You can read between the lines here.
Back to not buying gas on the 15th. This does not effect the oil companies. If it has a consequence at all it would only be against the station owners. Station owners buy from distributors who inturn buys from their distributor who inturn buys from the refineries who inturn buys from... you get the picture...I hope. There are many middle men (companies)from the hole in the ground in Iraq, Iran, Alaska and where ever they dig for oil to the hole in the ground you personally pump gas from for your car. So by the time you pay for your gas you have paid for every nut, bolt, man, ship, truck, wage and tax you can imagine. And don't get me started on the gas tax!!!
So the next to the last one in line is the station owner who makes approximatley 3 to 4 cents a gallon and that is where you the consumer pay for it all.
This is why gas stations have become convenience stores. They make their money from the products you buy while you fill your car.
We need to find another way to drop the gas prices.

TAMMY's BACK!!

Easy, just drop some of the outdated nukes we have on Iraq, Iran, and some of the South American countries, and we will have lots of free oil. If they don't want to play fair, then nuke them, and get it over. Also, drop a couple of them on the headquarter of the oil company exec's. He who has the most nuke missles, should control the oil. Just that simple (I wish).

Tammy,

I think six-shooter needs to get out fishing and lighten up. I was just being facetious and bloviating as usual. Six-shooter, please put down the left wing "koolaid", and realize that some of us like to stir things up to get conversation going. You need to stop going around and policing all comments for any slight verbage that might offend some little nutcase fringe group! I rode nuclear missle subs for almost 20 years and never got the opportunity to launch even one. So maybe I just have an "itchy" trigger finger. Any comments on how to get the gas prices down??
