Movie critics wanted
February 1, 2007 - 3:18pm — David Schueller
I’ve often thought it would be neat to read some movie reviews on this site. Seen one that merits attention, scrutiny or explanation? Your thoughts are welcome. Everybody seems to have unique ways to interpret movies, so it can be interesting finding out how people react and think about them. Local opinions can give fresh perspectives, especially to films that seem close to home like North Country, or need I say it, The Mighty Ducks.

I'm more than willing to...
Back to page topI'm more than willing to critique movies I've recently seen. I don't know which movies need critiquing, but I'm game if someone has suggestions. The Mighty Ducks is a bit old, but I gotta tell ya, back in the day, I loved it. Plus, who didn't have a crush on Emilio Estevez after that movie?
North Country was a well-made film, but I agree with many of the other critiques I've read of the the film that in the end, when her father suddenly reverses his opinion of her and the drama she's endured, it seems a bit over the top and unrealistic. The extreme torture that Josey endured actually diminished the effectiveness of the suit against harrassment, rather than bringing to light what happened. Without having grown up in that era, it is tough for viewers (especially younger ones) to understand the extent of sexism in the workplace and the dramatic accusations toward Josey leave you with a bit of a hole in your gut and wondering, how could she not have done more? The goal of the screenwriter, Michael Seitzman, was to dramatize her traumatic high school experience and her relationship with her son. The focus was not to draw attention to the harrassment she endured, which was the main purpose of the book the movie is based upon (Class Action: The Story of Lois Jensen and the Landmark Case that Changed Sexual Harrassment Law). The ordeals Josey endured in the film with her male coworkers were the same ordeals outlined in the book, but ultimately, by making the movie more "Hollywood-esque," the producers/screenwriter took something away that was an essential part of the book that led to the making of it. Overall, the beginning and middle of the movie were good, but the end (especially the overly dramatic and unrealistic courtroom scenes) leaves you with a little pit in your stomach and wondering "Why?" rather than thinking, "Good for her," which is where you should have been.

Back to page topDavid - that sounds like fun!
Have you seen the movie Beautiful Girls? It was filmed in Minnesota. It makes you long for a small town, good friends and a fish house.
"A beautiful girl can make you dizzy, like you've been drinking Jack and Coke all morning. She can make you feel high full of the single greatest commodity known to man - promise. Promise of a better day. Promise of a greater hope. Promise of a new tomorrow. This particular aura can be found in the gait of a beautiful girl. In her smile, in her soul, the way she makes every rotten little thing about life seem like it's going to be okay. The supermodels, Willy? That's all they are. Bottled promise. Scenes from a brand new day. Hope dancing in stiletto heels. "
It was made in 1996 starring Matt Dillon, Lauren Holly, Timothy Hutton, Rosie O'Donnell, Natalie portman, Mira Sorvino, Uma Thurman, and so on!
Mighty Ducks was fun, and I haven't seen North Country yet.
Okay...I know this isn't...
Back to page topOkay...I know this isn't "us" per se, but it's close enough and I've heard enough "uff-das" to never forget Fargo! Ha ha ha...I thought, though, that it was a great movie. Falsely leads the viewer to believe that it's based loosely on true events. It wasn't...although, when people down here (North Carolina) hear I'm from MN, they do ask.
I recently watched Saw III...great movie. I know it's not a MN movie, but it's interested. Kept me enthralled the entired time! It's not just another gory, crappy movie like Texas Chainsaw Massacre (what a waste of $3 that was!) - it's actually got a story line and a really HUGE twist in the end.

Back to page top'Proof' is also an excellent movie. It is about a woman who is struggling with her mathematical father's dementia. It is well written and acted with Anthony Hopkins and Gwyneth Paltrow.
'The Interpretor' is excellent as well, about an interpretor who overhears a murder plot on a major foreign politician, alot of plot twists! It made me go to my computer and look up African culture and history.
Ok Shannon first of all I...
Back to page topOk Shannon first of all I did not have a crush on Emilio. HAHA. And second, where are you watching new movies for three dollars? I wish I could get that kind of deal. But getting back on point a really good movie to see for those of you who enjoy a good action/comedy, check out "Crank". Starring Jason Stathom and Amy Smart. I recommend putting the kids to bed first. And for those of you who enjoy a sappy romantic comedy. Check out "The Family Stone" hilarious fun filled riot starring Sara jessica Parker and Luke Wilson.

Back to page topI just recently went to the movie theater and saw 'Freedom Writers' with Hilary Swank and Patrick Dempsey. GOOD movie!!! Very emotional at times but also very insightful! Exceptional movie :)
Also, 'Walk the Line' with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon has became a favorite of mine!
And for anyone that enjoys movies like 'Scar Face', 'The Godfather' movies etc. 'The Departed' was a really good movie as well!! Yes, it has alot of violence and profanity in it; but I am a HUGE Jack Nicholson fan and he was pretty good in that! :) Any movie with Jack in my opinion, is a good movie! (As Good As It Gets, Batman, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Anger Management, Something's Gotta Give, Chinatown etc.)
My husband & I were just...
Back to page topMy husband & I were just discussing this yesterday! How it's possible for one actor, for instance Jack Nicholson, to have NEVER made a bad movie. There are a few that I believe have truly got some winners under their belt. Al Pacino is another that if he's in it...odds are it's good. Another that we named was Matt Damon. While he hasn't made as many, what an incredible actor he has turned out to be. I love the Bourne Identity & Supremacy and the third one should be (I think) coming out this year.

Back to page topDogma was also great with Matt Damon and Good Will Hunting.
I loved The Departed, and I liked the change in the type of character by Matt Damon.

Back to page topFlushed Away is a great family movie. At Christmas time the Chamber treated kids to movies with Santa (thank you Chamber!!!) where they offered Flushed Away. It's a Dreamworks animated movie about an uptown mouse who gets flushed away into the London sewers. Both my child & I loved the movie, it was fun for him & amusing for me. I'd highly recommend it for a good chuckle, we'll be buying it when it hits the stores.

Back to page topI, too, loved Dogma. Great to have a movie that tests our own dogma. And, two of my most fav's are still Reservoir Dogs and The Wizard of Oz. Bet Freud would have fun with that statement.

Back to page topI went to see The Queen.
Queen Elizabeth II was pulled in a few different directions after the death of Lady Diana Spencer. She needed to be a grandmother and an in-touch sovereign, but she was also very traditional, making it difficult to do all three. The film shows this through subtle acting and a non-oppressive soundtrack. I liked it. There are also some great shots of wacky U.K. hunting gear. Gotta love those kilts.
Two movies I'm hoping to see...
Back to page topTwo movies I'm hoping to see are - The Messengers, The Number 23. The Messengers just because I enjoy a spook or a scare once in awhile. The Number 23 because it stars Jim Carrey in another dramatic role instead of showcasing his usual slapstick and physical comedic talents. I enjoy him in those roles but truly enjoyed his acting skills in The Truman Show and am looking forward to seeing his performance in The Number 23. I very much enjoyed one movie recently, which I purchased on DVD. A Scanner Darkly.
Featured in it as the main characters are - Keanu Reeves, Woody Harrelson, Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr., Rory Cochrane. It was a very different movie. It's from a novel by Philip K. Di*k - whose other works to film include Blade Runner, Total Recall and Minority Report. It's presented to the veiwer as a graphic novel. The effect (for me) was interesting. Here is the blurb on the back of the DVD.
The time: just beyond now. The place: Suburbia. The story: a twisted, funny tale of people hooked on Substance D. And of a government that cheerfully destroys it's citizens - their rights, their relationships - in order to save them. The actors named above play strung - out friends terrified of each other and of spies. Keanu Reeves plays a spy who's also one of the friends... until his two personalities begin to split. Enjoy the paranoia. Nobody's watching you really.
It was an interesting and often funny, yet shocking story.
I made comparisons to the rampant use of Meth. in society today while watching this movie. I'm sure it's not for everyone. If you like something off the beaten path once in awhile give it a watch.

Back to page topI tend to favor movies that feature the actors whose work I like. I admit that I will watch any movie which stars people whom I like to watch.
Here's a few of my favorite actors: Sean Penn, Morgan Freeman, Meryl Streep, Kate Blanchett, Glenn Close, Anthony Hopkins, Michael Douglas, Kathy Bates, Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidmann, Helen Mirren, Kevin Spacey and Dame Judith Dench. I just like the way these people deliver a character.
Strangely, because I don't read horror novels, three of my favorite movies are Stephen King stories: Shawshank Redemption, Delores Claiborne and Misery.
Quotes from those movies come out of my mouth every so often.
'Husbands die every day,...
Back to page top'Husbands die every day, Dolores. Why... one is probably dying right now while you're sitting here weeping. They die... and leave their wives their money. I should know, shouldn't I? Sometimes they're driving home from their mistress' aparment and their brakes suddenly fail. '
Hmmm, where did you learn of these great finds from Mr. King?
My favorite male actors are; Jamie Foxx, Al Pacino, Andy Garcia, Will Smith, Edward Norton, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Sam Neil, Ray Romano, Sean Penn, Jason Lee, Johnny Depp, Martin Lawrence, Norman Reedus and Tim Robbins to name a few.
My favorite female actors are; Gwyneth Paltrow, Meryl Streep, Natalie Portman, Mira Sorvino and Kathleen Turner.

Back to page topFavorite male actors: Jack Nicholson (ALL time favorite!), Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Robert Redford, Denzel Washington, Robin Williams, Tom Hanks, Clive Owen, Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale.
Favorite female actors: Meg Ryan, Jenna Elfman, Kate Hudson, Cameron Diaz, Marilyn Monroe, Sandra Bullock, Helen Mirren, and Kate Winslet.

Back to page topI don't know if any of you like documentaries. If you do, check out Jesus Camp. What a bunch of looney-toons and hypocrites. Wow.

Back to page topAlso a German subtitle movie 'Das Experiment'. The English title is 'The Black Box'. It is based on the Stanford Prison Experiment that took place in 1971. Thrilling and disturbing.

Back to page topA great German film (with English subtitles) is Good Bye Lenin. It came out a few years ago. It's about a son who has to protect his mother from the shock of the reunification of East and West Germany while she was in a coma. It's a funny satire, and a moving film.

Back to page topWARNING! THIS COMMENT MAY CONTAIN INFORMATION THAT COULD RUIN THE END OF THE MOVIE FOR YOU!!!
Wow! Das Experiment sounds really, really interesting. I just watched Marie Antoinette and was thoroughly disappointed...I thought it would follow through all the way to her beheading. So, I hope there's a Part Deux.
I just got back from the...
Back to page topI just got back from the movie theater, and coincidentally it was a subtitled movie! I went to see Pan's Labyrinth, and it was fantastic! It weaves between a fairy tale and a tragic story but keeps you interested until the very end.
The theater was empty tonight, but I hope it was just because it was Tuesday.
The best movies ever made are the ones that make you take a look at your self, your family, the human race and see what we take for granted and see what we leave behind.

Back to page topYesterday I went to see The Bridge to Terebithia....
fair warning -
This movie is rated G, but something very big happens, so be prepared to console your children and answer some big questions!
I am headed tomorrow to a foreign film entitled 'Abandoned' will let you guys know if it is worth seeing.
Shannon, It's your lucky...
Back to page topShannon,
It's your lucky day! They just accounced that they will make a part Deux to Marie Antoinette, so you will get to see the beheading. I think Nancy Pelosi is going to play the part! LOL
To everyone else,
Where are you finding these movies?? I have not seen them advertised in the paper. Probably too thought provoking for S.C.!!
roj...they've "accounced"...
Back to page toproj...they've "accounced" it, huh??? LOL...well, I'll be sure to watch it!
I want to see Bridge to Terebithia and so does my son and my husband. I hope it's good! I also just watched "The Departed" --- amazing film. Loved it. And, I'm not that into action/violent movies, but this one was a winner. It kept me intrigued all the way to the end. I'm going to watch "Man of the Year" with Robin Williams tonight...I hope it's as funny as the commercials made it out to be.
I really am not one to go to...
Back to page topI really am not one to go to too many movies or watch much tv (EXCEPT THE NEWS). My daughter enjoys the theater, when she sees a good movie she can't wait for me to see it. Of course I wait for the dvd, and the two of us do the pop and popcorn on the couch covered with a blanket laughing and giggling like two teens. We enjoyed the heart warming/breaking love story written by Nicholas Sparks "The Notebook" with James Garner, Gena Rowlands, Rachel McAdams and the good looking (umm) Ryan Gosling. (Girls this man IS HOT HOT HOT).
The Abandoned was horrible....
Back to page topThe Abandoned was horrible. It had the same old same old story line. Then at the end all of a sudden there is about 10 minutes of this naked woman walking around.
If that doesn't make you lose interest, try this "boars eating babies alive." I believe the whole audience cleared when they knew what was going to happen.
Shannon
The Bridge to Terebithia is not too bad, a bit after school special. But it deals with a very heavy issue, so be ready to answer some serious questions from your son. The fantasy part is a very small portion with most of it shown in the credits. Most of the people at this one were crying half way thru, children and adults.

Back to page topI cannont find the "Departed" on any of the video store shelves!! Everyone must be trying to review it before tonight!! The notebook was filmed here in Charleston. Was a good movie, until they turned it into a love story!! (just kidding!!).
