I don't know much about the soccer league in Fort Frances, but do know they have it for kids and adults, the soccer field is in the west end of town -- check out the Times and possibly post your question on their site.

Soccer! International Falls has it as of July 2009. Right now it is targeted toward K-4th grades but would like older kids to participate. We meet from 5:30 to 7pm every Monday and Wednesday in July at the 8th street park behind SuperOne. I hope this grows into a full league over the next few years. Contact me by email for more information.

Glad to see soccer here. I asked a French guy who manages a premier league team in Lorient France and who went to college in Alabama if the US would ever become a first-rate soccer country. He said: "There is more athletic talent in the USA than anywhere is Europe. If Americans started treating soccer like they treat hockey, they could dominate the world." By that, he meant finding stars early, sending them to development programs like Ann Arbor, and not allowing the best of the best to waste four years playing college soccer. A few Americans are starting to do that -- and the second place finish in the Confederation Cup in June was a major victory for that approach with Landon Donovan and Joey Altidore playing alongside the best in the world. So, go IFalls. There was a day when we produced some of the best hockey players on the planet.

In 1971, I went to a hockey game in Bern Switzerland during that year's World Championship and the USA beat the Czechs 5-1 with Lefty Curran in goal, Huffer Christiansen, Tim Sheehy, and Peter Fichuk up front. The core of that team won the silver Olympic medal the next winter in Sapporo and included Henry Boucha from Warroad and Gambucci from Hibbing.

In most of the rest of the world, the best soccer players come from working-class towns, not cake-eating suburbs.
