Is an apology enough?

Filed under:

No votes yet

Michael Vick has plead guilty to a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge and apologized.

Is an apology enough? Should he be banned for life from the NFL? Should he serve prison? Should he pay back the $22 million in bonus money he already recieved in a record $130 million contract signed in 2004?

What are your thoughts?

I definately agree with a prison sentence as well as being banned from the NFL while in prison. He should have to pay back his $22 millon bonus as he did not honor his contract obligations, especially the code of conduct part. I believe that once he has served his time, the NFL should meet with him and decide what course of action to take from there. People do deserve a second chance, however that doesn't mean it should be as good as their first chance. And for those that are going to come on here and say that he did nothing different than hunters do or that this is a racial issue, I will save you the time and the agruement. Hunting is legal and animals are not tortured. Dog fighting and hunting are not even remotely the same thing and had Tom Brady or Peyton Manning done the same thing, they would be in the same boat as Vick.

Saying sorry does not count...

Saying sorry does not count for everything. As a sports caster on FOX stated - "he only apologized because he got caught."

He should serve jail time as well as lose his bonus. Instead of the NFL receiving the money, maybe the money could be used as restitution to Humane Societies all over the United States?

He needs to be reminded that we were not the first creatures on this planet, we were put here with advantages to take care of animals, not torture them.

When you see the trouble...

Back to page top

When you see the trouble that Michael Vick has been in the last year alone, from giving his home crowd the finger to trying to carry a water bottle with alleged marijuana aroma in it on an airplane to the revolting dogfighting scandal, you see a man with too much money hanging around the wrong associates and thinking that he is above the rest of us when it comes to doing whatever he feels like. The real world came calling yesterday and now after he loses up to $144 million dollars, is cut from the Falcons and is a permanent black mark on the face of sports, his apology as good as it sounded, is but a shallow attempt to stop the bleeding. He has already hired public relations firms to build up his image and he hasn't even served one day of his sentence. His best bet is to make arrangements to serve his sentence as soon as possible, keep his business to himself, and pray that things are better in the future.

I think he should serve his prison sentence....i dont think he should be banned for life from the NFL for DOGFIGHITNG. It is a horrible thing but i know more rapists who got less of a punishment for committing a crime that i consider to be far worse.......media frenzy about all of this is rediculous..how about dedicating some time to the Sunanese children in Sudan being forced to serve in a rebel army...i think that is far more newsworthy than a hyped up football players misconstrued actions.......dont you think?

raniergurl, Why don't you...

Back to page top

raniergurl,

Why don't you go hug a tree in VNP, until you come to your senses and realize what a travesty his actions caused! This guy is a "pee brain" idiot, lowlife, who doesn't give a "rat's a**" about anyone but himself!! Just wait until the Commonwealth/State of Virginia gets ahold of him. They will put the screws to him, for sure! I'll bet he does 15 -25 years minumum, and many dollars in fines, when they get done with him. He is nothing more than an animal, and should be treated the same way he treated those poor dogs. All of his money should go to the care and treatment of abused and abandonded animals. Scumbag Vick has three courts to contend with; Federal, state and the "court of Public opinion". Granted, the legal system will deal with Mr. Vick in due time. But the court of public opinion has spoken out loud and clear. The majority of Americans hear of his involvement in the training, fighting and killing of dogs, and it is just too much for them to forgive. Of course you will see pictures in the paper of people holding signs telling us to forgive Mr. Vick. In my paper today they had a picture of a nine yr old "ghetto" boy holding up a sign that read, "everybody makes mistakes". There, is a young boy who already is being raised to believe that "big time sports" will trump any dispicable action, any time. I'll bet that young boy really has some great parenting at home. So, Mr Vick, have fun in your legal fights, but remember I believe that the jury in the "court of public opinion" has ruled against you. If you ever set foot on a football field again, I believe the protest will only get louder. If not, then this country has really gone down the toilet.

""ghetto" boy?" Leave it to my great friend roj1950 to take an already racially-charged situation and really hyperracialize it. Not by accident does he choose to live in the state that loves to fly the confederate f-rag over its state capital. Like raniergurl, I am a tree-hugging, dog-loving Northerner who thinks that a prison sentence, the loss of an estimated $100 million and the probability that Michael Vick will never again be a starting NFL quarterback is punishment enough. I think that the court system is working and that the so-called "court of public opinion" has never worked, particularly when it depends on the collective wisdom of the educationally deprived rotten boroughs of America for its inspiration [and ratings]. By the way, I have a very aggressive corgi who can whip any 25 pound dog you can put up --any takers? Ain't America fun? I sure will miss it. PS. Congratualtions to the RR football team for its season-opening win.

My, my, my...TLJ, liberalism...

Back to page top

My, my, my...TLJ, liberalism in its glory. And, really, you claim you are a compassionate liberal type (by this and other posts), yet in the midst of the hoop-la about dog fighting, you--compassionate liberal--would suggest fighting YOUR dog for entertainment. Pathetic. And while I do believe there is a time for compassion, people like Vick do not deserve it. Here is a man who had it all, a life most of us could only dream about, and he decided it was cool to abuse poor animals for his jollies, even buying a house to stage these events. He thought it was amusing to see these animals shredded and you and others talk about cutting the man some slack in any form? Than you propose fighting your very own dog? To prove what? I don't care if he lost a billion dollars, gets 50 years, and has to pay back every cent he ever made! He generally proved he thought he was better than the rest of humanity, scorned the laws the rest of us live by, and found humor in animals being killed...no, he deserves no compassion. You and rainiergurl can jump on the next plane to never-never land where you belong...cuz they don't want to ever grow up, either! Am I being to harsh? Boo-hoo

Well, well - TLJ must be back at his "liberal" school/stomping grounds. Didn't think we would hear from you once the "teaching" started. We don't fly the "C" flag over the statehouse. The "brothers" made us take it down and put it on a free-standing pole. I personally have never liked that flag. I have read my history and know where it came from, and also know that the "rednecks" have given it another meaning. How is the Mr. Vick situation "racial". It appeared he was only "killing" dark colored dogs, not white ones. I personally have two "white" dogs. Sounds like "your" court of public opinion, depends on a "ghetto" mentality for it's rulings and opinions. They must have been the same ones who aquitted O.J. Simpson!! Hyperracialize?? I didn't know I could do it, yet, spell it! You didn't like my term, "ghetto boy"?? How about ghetto attitude/thinking? Because anyone who puts up a sign like that, is being taught by their "single" parents, that this guy is still a hero, rather than the "thug" he really is. I hope he is in the "receiver" position, when he gets in the big house.

Back to page top

Roj you have hit it on the head 100% again. Michael Vick needs to serve maximum time and pay back all the money he violated from his contractual agreements. Someone suggested the money go to the Humane Society...GREAT idea!

Raniergurl, you are totally off base. I have seen the results of these dog fights. If you had seen the puppies torn to pieces (as "training" aids, if you can imagine such a horror of a thing), the entrails (thats the insides of these unfortunate animals for our less educated friends) torn from these dogs, the eye balls literally chewed out of the skulls, the legs, ears, tails, etc ripped off these dogs, the disease these poor animals experience from infections, then you would cry for this low-life miscreant Vick to get the MAXIMUM SENTENCE and never play pro ball, ever. Dog fighting is the lowest form of entertainment and gambling. There is no redeeming point to dog fighting, and anyone who finds entertainment in it is human garbage, just like Vick and his ilk. The pitiful wails and cries from the dogs who have have been abused in these fights are enough to make me vomit...and I have seen people in worse shape then these dogs, so its not like I have not been exposed to the horrors of what gun shot wounds, car accidents, falls, burns, disease, etc from my experience in law enforcement and emergency medicine. Vick is a pathetic loser, a man who "had it all" and chose to find entertainment at the expense of a dumb animal, a animal who in normal cases would give its life for pieces of human garbage like Vick and other humans, its just the nature of dogs to protect people. If it was up to me, I would hog-tie Vick, smear him with gravy, and put him in a pen with starving pit-bulls so he could experience the horror these dogs go through. Don't let me hear of anyone suggesting leniency for Vick. He is garbage. Raniergurl and those who would suggest he recieve leniency, first go and see these sad, tortured dogs and then come back and talk to us about "compassion" for losers like Vick. If you indeed work at a veteranary hospital,Raniergurl, shame on you, you should know better, or you have only put bandaids on kittens so far. Grow up!
