Challenges to development in Borderland

Filed under:

No votes yet

City and county officials have a number of projects they are pursuing that are intended to help create a more stable economy.

What do you see as the biggest challenges facing the city and county in economic development and how do you see our community overcoming those challenges?

Location, location,...

Location, location, location.

The city and county need to attract businesses with geographically agnostic business models/functions.

For example, claims processing centers, call centers, technical support centers, etc. They should target middle size companies with these needs. This is called farm-sourcing.

The city/county should hire a firm that has experience recruiting companies looking to save money by farm-sourcing.

Give up on seeking blue-collar manufacturing jobs for the area. This isn't China. The U.S. cannot compete. The only way manufacturing jobs will grow in the U.S. again is if the dollar becomes much weaker than it already is.

We need to become a destination and not just a route to Canada. Something has to be built here that can be a draw to the public. It has to be something people can come to 12 months of the year not just 3. It could be another Deadwood, South Dakota with streets paved with fools gold and the hated casino's. Every time I mention that word I get a negative response but it would work. At least I don't give up.

I commend your not giving up Kay, But I also hate the word "casino". I think bringing more jobs here will make people want to live here and visit and get more people to care, Alot of people I talk to about this just don`t seem to care anymore.

Why should they care, when the two major sources of income are, Boise and Welfare!! I still think an outlet mall would be a wise choice. I know it would take a major cash outlay for some corporation, but I think people would come from Canada and other areas to shop for name brand items!! Just an idea that won't leave my little brain!!

I have an idea lets put the casino in the Lake Kabetogama area. It is already a destination and you can build an outlet mall because there will be a ton of people wanting to spend the money they win. Lots of area to build and not to far from Canada. It even smells good. What more could you want.

Well kay, for starters we don't want it in Kabatogama. We don't want outlet malls and we want to keep our good smelling air just the way it is, sweet smelling and good. Besides we have all the gambling we need with pull tabs and Bingo at the community center. I mean, what more could we want? We have one gas station, a new restruant with high speed computer access, one marine shop, one bait shop, one church, one community center and a grumpy 93year old fishing guide. Now I ask you, what more will a casino do for Lake Kabetogama? Besides, we don't even need a Wal Mart or a K Mart because every August all the Norwegians and Finnlanders put every thing they don't want out in their yards and trade it to each other in something they call a community yard sale and we get to see every thing everybody else has in their houses. Its better then any common outlet mall. You folks way up north in the Falls have funny way of doing business. I mean I even heard you won't let your children use floatees at the city beach. I guess you want them to learn how to swim the "ole fashion way" sink or swim!

Way down south in Kabatogama!! Is that where they end all sentences in "y'all"?? I agree, if you put that in Kabatogama, all of the I-Falls gangs and "GOTH" creatures will migrate down there, and ruin the area. Let's keep these wonderful people in the Falls where they belong.
