Ideas for improving our city
October 10, 2007 - 1:12pm — MamaG
Have you ever thought that International Falls could be a great place to live and could draw a lot more tourists than it does? Have you been to a place that you enjoyed and thought, "I wish we had that here?" I've read the comments on improving International Falls but they seem to be all spread out over this site. Let's put our minds together on this forum and talk about what would work. I think something needs to be done with our main street. Those of us that are old enough to remember actually shopping on main street (or crazy daze when it really was crazy) need to know this historic town isn't going down the tubes. There are places that are made into "Norwegian town" and the like. Would it be possible to "upgrade" our downtown into the 1950s? Have a malt shop? Maybe a small museum sort of feel to it? We have a lot of culture here in the Falls and I think we should play on that. Go down south and they rake in a lot of money with war reenactments. Any ideas?

Thanks mamag for getting...
Back to page topThanks mamag for getting this forum started and hopefully we can keep it all in one spot so that city leaders can continue to read it and get some ideas. Keeping it positive would also be a good thing.
I know southern MN has the Laura Ingells (sp?) play that they put on some weekends during the summer. Couldn't we have one based on loggers or Kettle Falls or something? Or Grand Rapids has the musical on the riverboat. I know we have enough talent in this town to do something like this. If it is on weekends, then maybe tourists would have another reason to stay and check out the town. How about getting rid of the 4th of July and do something like Land of the Loon. I am sure a schedule could be figured out so that the crafters could make a trip here as well. Because we currently don't have a summer band, it would be easier to get some from out of town if it wasn't the holdiay weekend. Maybe a committee could be formed and talk to the chambers in Virginia and Ely to see how they make it work.
Granted tourism isn't going to solve the economic situation but it would be a start. Maybe some tourist has a business and would start something up here if we show them we have fun things to do.
If we could get some more...
Back to page topIf we could get some more shopping places here that would be great. Like for school clothes shopping, theres Kmart, unless you want to spend a fortune at a couple other places. A 24-7 restaraunt would be great also. Young adults need somewhere to go. Instead they are doing drugs and drinking. Maybe if they had a 24-7 restraunt to sit and hang out with one another or something, maybe that would improve the young drinking that is going on. They need something to do and bowling is pretty much the only thing to do in this town. That gets pretty boring. We really do need some help in this town because it is a boring town for all these kids! And adults! I am always bored. I don't drink, so I don't go to bars. What else is there to do?? Spend a fortune at the movies?? No thanks! Hopefully there is something we can do. We need people to stay in this town, because I am ****** proud of it and would hate to see it go down the drain!
This is a great effort to...
Back to page topThis is a great effort to get a single topic on a single page. I would like, as I have said before, to see 3rd Street from 3rd Ave to 5th Ave cobblestoned and turned into a walking mall. Stone memorials honoring various town founders and memorials with artifacts commemorating the various industrys that made this town. Sitting areas, trees and water features. I would like to see every building and every lot with a business like we used to have with the old hustle and bustle we used to have and some of that will come soon, I hope. Then I have some disagreements with some previous thinking. Nobody, adult or child, needs anyplace to hang out at 24/7. That is one of the major problems in this country, with adults and children, a place to hang out at 24/7. That is to limited and to restrictive of a live style for anyone and a lifestyle that inherently causes bordom and loss of growth "hanging out". Adults and children both need to be "HOME" with their family at some time at night albeit possibly a differant time for adults versus children. We have always had a bowling alley and never did we ever hang out there, there was just to much other better things to do with our time like explore the town, outside skating rinks, 3rdSt and 11 st playgrounds, bus to the city beach, marching band, homework, sneaking down to the river to fish and yes trapping down the railroad tracks. Children are the same today as they were then, only parents restrict and limit their thinking. I like the idea of a malt shop downtown and I like the idea of a quality, 1st class candy store downtown. One of the greatest things used to be the theaters downtown but that could not fly today. A 24/7 restaraunt Is not a good idea but a downtown restaraunt like the old Chicago Cafe and Rex hotel is but we do have one on 3rd and 3rd now. We also have Barneys and Kathys and others. As far as children activities go there are almost the same activities as when we were growing up its just that parents don't make an effort to steer those children to those activities. As far as the downtown goes, I agree, it needs to be built up in an inviting manner. One thing we don't need is another crop of children growing up to be our next generation of city leaders thinking we need to have a lot of special places to hang out. We have Rainy, Kabetogama and Namakin Lakes to hang out in, 80 miles of river, east all the way to as far as you have nerve enough to venture out to and North all the way to the Hudson. If thats not enough area to hang out in then go to the Library thats another good place to hang out at. We have more then enough opportunity for our children we just can't see the light for the day. Children are drinking and on drugs because they are not planning for the duck hunting this weekend, or trapping this weekend or slapping pucks against the side of the garage to show the entire state how good they are. There not planning who is going to be on the Christmas caroling group hay wagon, driven by some blind guy at the riding stables and women like to cook and make quilts and needlepoint but nobody shows them how. Its not just places we need to build its minds we have to build also. A church on Sunday and at least one other night a week would be a good thing also. We are blessed with a good variety of churches in our fine little town and they can do a lot of work we as adults are afraid or don't have the time to do. Another good thing to do one night a week is gather in the living room with the TV and radio turned off and take turns reading the bible. The 6 year old up to mom and dad all taking turns reading the bible. Its fun, try it some night.
well well another long lines...
Back to page topwell well another long lines of cra@ everybody hung out at the bowling alley but then we did not grow up in K- land by the big minnow we all grew up in I falls and we did go sleding, hunting and a lot of other things that im sure you were not doing being were you grew up and by the same family as im sure we all did not trap and sell minnows when we were growing up, we had a little more freedom in the big little town of I falls, Thank you Im sure you will have a good return on this comment A.T.
Anton, I agree with...
Back to page topAnton,
I agree with everything you said, but don't you dare bring God into the school. You know the pledge, "one nation under Allah"?? Be carefull, the social services will be telling you you're forcing religion of the youngsters! How dare you turn off Johnnie's TV and make him read the bible. And what about taking the 10 commandments out of public places? How do you explain that to little Sally when she asks why the men took down the commandments. Sure I'm being facetious, but that's what kind of secular society we are being turned into. I'm so glad I sent my kids to Catholic schools, and forced them to have religion classes each day, and do alter boy/girl services, etc . . . . ! And my grandchildren are going to catholic schools, even if I have to pay for it. No, government schools for my off-spring! Another school shooting today!! Why are there no school shootings in religious based schools?? Anyway, so much for my getting off on a tangent. All of the previous bloggers, had some very great ideas, I must say.
If there are voices in the...
Back to page topIf there are voices in the wilderness, then Anton is one of them. His visionary idea of a place with cobblestones and coffee shops is actually the norm in Europe where laws require towns to have pedestrian zones. Last time I looked, Americans were flooding to Europe to enjoy a quality of life that American towns have sacrificed in the name of malls and discount stores. Of course, the last time I looked was a long time ago. Yesterday. Can we elect a local visionary the way we elect a school board? If not, why not? Committees do not develop visions but enlightened individuals do. Keep the light shining bright, minnow guy.
Everything that 65 and Roj...
Back to page topEverything that 65 and Roj and TJ say is true about visioning, but the fact is that committees and local gov't have and continue to dream and attempt to come up with a "vision" for this community. The problem is just as local gov't reachs V1(take off speed) with some fresh idea or an old idea whose time has come to look at again , some special interest group or some department in bigger gov't or a lack or loss of funds stops everything in its tracks. All your dreams are great but they have been talked about many times and attempts to act on them have taken place many times, but it is an uphill fight. Local officials may seem stupid sometimes, but really, they have the same thoughts and dreams you have, they do have some ability to act on them and they do, but most of the time, they get shot down in flames. Keep dreaming and pass your ideas on,new ideas are really needed, but please, don't say that local govt isn't progressive or insightful enough to see the same things you see.
Doorsman, I also agree that...
Back to page topDoorsman,
I also agree that most of the city officials want what's best for the city, but I think there are enough "old timer" blowhards, who have too much say in what happens to the Falls. THEY are the ones keeping the city from being more progressive. I agree that the City has reached V1 speed, many times, but the old windbags, cause severe "windshear" and down go the "747's" of plans, in flames. But, I also lay alot of the blame with your elected officials. THEY can do alot for you, I have seen it work down here. Make them work for you, or vote the bums out of Office.
Your right. To accomplish...
Back to page topYour right. To accomplish something takes forever and sometimes just never gets through all of the hoops. What just happened at KEDA should make every citizen stand up and take notice. To have that much money missing and no one notices just blows my mind. What could have been done with that amount of money. How many homes could have been painted, small businesses started, etc. Now the question is how could it have happened with not only one agency but two and to top it all off the head person is still there. Small town America at its best.
$340,000 windfall found....
Back to page top$340,000 windfall found. Now that Keda has discovered such a windfall, I wonder what will become of all this money to help improve the business climate under which KEDA is chartered????? Or, will it be deceided that it is in the best interests of the businesas community to just give it to the federal government to help them build yet another VNP building on the river so that 350 locals and 17 visitors can see now and then??? What will happen to all that money we never even knew was lost now that we have found it???
Anton, 340K can buy alot of...
Back to page topAnton,
340K can buy alot of feed for one large "white elephant" (VNP).
Well my opinion is that this...
Back to page topWell my opinion is that this was all swept under the rug and the agency will continue as it always has. So far if you don't start a NEW business in a NEW building you won't benefit from KEDA money. So let all of the empty buildings on main street set there. I bet if there was an incentive to set up shop on main street there would be people that would come forward with some type of business. There have been many ideas on this site that would work on main street if they could get some encouragment. Maybe the new head of the Chamber of Commerce could help in this area. It would be nice if new businesses wouldn't be another store that we already have.
I thought this site was for...
Back to page topI thought this site was for ideas that could benifit the Falls, lets get back on the original subject MammaG had in mind.
The problem is action, isn`t...
Back to page topThe problem is action, isn`t it? Many of us on the blog have great dreams but we don`t really live up there full time. My favorite story of one guy was when the old salt and lime guy from the mill, Warren McIntosh ?, started planting flowers all over the Falls, beautifying it. This was citizen action at its best. Government has a very limited role in a place like the Falls. My guess is that if 20% of the people who daily read and write in this blog created a citizen`s action committee regarding downtown or Highway 53, the politicos could indeed find the money. There are foundations and individuals interested in retaining the vitality of small towns; we just need some grant writers and a few more visionaries.
As usual, TLJ is "right on"!...
Back to page topAs usual, TLJ is "right on"! Even, I (roj2000) believe there are some very bright minds left in the Falls, and somehow, they all need to coalesce, and bring the ideas to the table for discussion. But, please, accept ALL ideas, from everyone, even if you don't think they will work. Maybe that person's idea isn't so hot this time, but the next idea they have, will be the one that gets the ball rolling. But, may I also add, (again), that you need to get your elected officials "totally" involved in helping you. Not just their usual "lip service", but actual help. For the past 10 years I have seen what the elected officials can do for you. We actually have a "North" Charleston down here, (not affliated with the historic Charleston). It is the fifth largest city in South Carolina, but believe it or not it doesn't have a "downtown" per say!! It had one years ago, but the crime, etc., ran everyone away from there, and then the Navy base shut down, and it got even worse. Well, the N. Chas and Federal elected officials got together, and solicited big companies to come and look at the town and see what could be done. Well, to make a long story short, the big companies were given incentives to come here, and a large development company has begun to transform the land on the old Navy base (valuable water front property), into a very nice community area. They also are rebuilding the "old town area", with Federal and state money, and guess what, business are starting to move in like crazy, beautiful big homes are being built, and the degenerates and crime are slowly being forced out. Of course some people are claiming this is causing "gentrification" and ruining the poor people's lives. Well, these poor people who are getting top dollar for their properties, and are "being forced to move", are the ones complaing the loudest. But, these areas were where the crime and criminals were residing. I have seen their ten and twenty year plans for the area, and if it comes to fuition, then we will have an example of how maybe the Falls could return to vibrance and the way it used to be.
According to the State...
Back to page topAccording to the State Auditor, this person who "stole" these funds from KEDA was one of the best "con" people they have ever seen. Her plan was so unusual and planned it would have taken a very stringent audit to discover it. The biggest mistake the agency did was not having a yearly audit done. All that has changed and this money will be recovered. These funds are used to benifit this community and will continue. There is no defense but this was a lesson learned and the only person who needs to pay has been sentenced, not severe enough but will have there life changed. I agree with you that more effort should be put into the downtown area and I am confident that if someone wants to open a business the city would be open to any and all ideas to help a proposed project be successful.Roj, thanks for the comments but it is not the fatcats and no good elected official who cause all the problems, it is the system and I do feel that the current local gov't decision makers do have a progressive thought pattern when it comes to our city.Kay, nothing was swept under the rug, this investigation and problem was open to the public and press, all facts and people involved where named in the paper, KEDA board, staff and the person who committed the crime. And Warren was a good man, more are needed. They just have to step forward.
Thank you MamaG for starting...
Back to page topThank you MamaG for starting a thread specifically on the subject of improving this community. I've seen many great ideas for revitalizing I falls sprinkled throughout this website but not in one place. So here are some thoughts I've entertained about our downtown...
Not only have I been to other places and thought to myself, "I wish we had that in the Falls," I have thought to myself, "something like this definitely SHOULD be in the Falls." There is so much potential in this town, not just in the downtown area we all want to see flourish again, but in its people. There's so much hidden talent out there, so many ideas that, given the right opportunity, encouragement and assistance, I'm certain could be successful. The downtown that I envision taking off is one where celebrating our local culture is key, with stores and shops that compliment, rather than compete with, each other. The downtown strip is already quite attractive, and the businesses already there are great, but to fill the remaining vacant spots with ideas like the following or any others could make our downtown a real unique experience.
Malt shoppe/candy store--awesome idea. I imagine something similar to the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory but obviously with a northern MN flair. I've been to some of the original shops out west, and they were such quaint, pleasant places to be in, with a real hometown feel. If there's someone out there who's good with sweets, what a great idea. And I don't see why it can't include a malt shop. Making the sweets would be the harder part, adding some good old fashioned ice cream confections would be simple.
How about a woodworking shop? There are many talented people in this community who build wooden home furnishings/decor pieces, from small shelves to large hutches, finished or unfinished. Having a place to buy locally made crafts like that would be wonderful.
Outside of Bemidji is a small winery that makes flavors of wine only from native berries, boasting the fact that they are made from fruits that thrive in our extreme environment, like raspberries, strawberries, etc. It'd be a great idea for someone or for a group of people who are into that kind of hobby. I love a good glass of wine and would be the first one in line at the grand opening, and a faithful customer!
A good bookstore would really be great, but I know it's sketchy, seeing as how several of those have also come and gone. And mixing in some diversity by starting that Mexican restaurant back up would be awesome too. Regardless of why they shut down, it doesn't change the fact that every time I was there the service was nice, food was great and the atmosphere was bright, lively and inviting.
I'm no expert on business funding or the politics involved, but it would be great if somehow there could be a push for new small businesses all at one time, with some type of incentive program, so that they could all get started together and even benefit from opening together. It seems that some failed businesses never got enough exposure to start off with momentum. But think of a bunch of new small businesses opening on the same "grand opening" weekend, say soon after Thanksgiving so as to benefit from the holiday rush in a way that will draw a crowd--a real community effort to give them a good start. And all of the stores, new and existing, could showcase themselves and festively dress up their windows like the contest they had in Fort Frances and in other small towns I've lived in. I've seen that alone draw plenty of attention.
Wow! Sorry for how long this ended up being. My mind really wandered. There really is so much potential out there. I encourage those of you with a profitable passion to consider creating your own little niche on main street (with help, hopefully, from local economic assistance). A relevant quote goes something like this: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can make a difference. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
Fantastic ideas but you...
Back to page topFantastic ideas but you would have to shoot for spring as getting funding is a long process. The major thing is local shopping. Now that the Canadian dollar is so good I would think you would see alot of shoppers. Personally I think at least 3 stores could open with the insurance money of KEDA's.
Thanks for pointing that...
Back to page topThanks for pointing that out...I actually hadn't even considered that. How lucky we are to live on the border in this situation. Perhaps the canadian dollar being worth more than it has in over 30 years will actually do the falls some good! I just can't help but imagine this beautiful cobblestone (good idea, whoever mentioned that one) strip of great, eclectic shops. If that type of downtown strip existed accross the river, I'd absolutely be checking it out! And if there were ever a board of "visionaries" created, as someone mentioned, I'd most definitely love to be on it. I love kicking around ideas and pulling together all of the favorite things I remember from living in other places that seemed to do so well there. I'd love for the businesses I mentioned to exist, but unfortunately I'm not the one who has those skills...I know they're out there though!! I hope to someday be able to start up my own such place to live out my own passion, but I'm just not there yet. By the time I am ready though, I certianly hope the encouragement and assistance from the city is there to help me out. And great point, kay, about that KEDA money and how it could go toward doing exactly what we've all been talking about. Someone mentioned earlier the idea of that money going toward VNP to build "yet another building." Is there any validation to that statement or was it just a random comment? I'd really like to know if there are in fact actual plans yet as to what that recovered money might go to. Anyone who knows, I'll be looking for answers in Kay's other blog on that subject.
Do you remember when we had...
Back to page topDo you remember when we had a "Main Street District" organization? They are largely responsible for the new sidewalks, lighting, trees and benches in the downtown area. Unfortunately, once again, a cohesive attitude was lacking and that organization fell by the wayside. The Falls is an autocratic society, filled with people who don't like change, don't want anyone to tell them what to do, don't want anyone fishing in their spot...
Are you willing to open a storefront? I'm sure there are people who will help you make it happen! I hope to do it some day, but for now, I have a different 9-5 existence. Starting a business takes more than just capital for the building, as I'm sure you know.
I'm hopeful all the projects you're talking about will come to fruition in the next five years, but I also hope that you will take part in making it happen by staying here to spend your money, instead of going shopping out of town. Stay positive and ask your local organizations how you can help!
I just want to state that I...
Back to page topI just want to state that I am glad that someone (MamaG) is thinking in the "positive" of wanting something to take place.
But here is a fact that everyone needs to come to grips with. When investing any sort of money in ANY project - no matter who does it, government/private, or where it's down, rural/metro, there has to be a Return of Investment.
That means you are making a net profit eventually, after the money you put in.
Now using that theory:
You can't dump tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands in historic restoration type projects, in this town, in it's current economic state, and expect anything except a negative return on the investment.
The reason places in Europe exist with "Ped" areas, is because they have been like that for a LONG time. You can find something like that in the U.S. - Vail Village is a "Ped" area - and it works there - because of the amount of money that flows in that area.
Don't get me wrong - I want more people to think positive - but we have to start thinking about what is realistic for this area.
======================
Let's talk about KEDA. Did Mr. Nevanen have almost 350K snaked from under his nose over a couple year span of time? Absolutely.
Did he try and cover it up? Did he hide from the responsibility of this grave situation? NO
He came out - and publically admitted that he screwed up and that it won't happen again. Sorry people - but crap happens. We can't go back in time and stop it from happening - just be glad that it was insured. Or KEDA, and this county would be out that money completely. Because you definately ain't recouping that from the thief.
Now small businesses. Seriously. Lets go back to ROI. Someone please, come up with a small business idea, that does NOT involve another gas station, diner, or knick knack hut, and THEN - create a full business plan, with a 5 year financial plan laying out how it's going to succeed in this economic climate. With a POSITIVE Return on Investment. Then make yourself an appointment with Jenny Dougherty - who is the new Small Business Development Center representative - and have her go over it with you. If it's solid - THEN through the SBDC make a request through KEDA for some funding help. Thats how it's done.
If you do ALL that - THEN - and only then come back on this forum and talk about what KEDA should or should not do with that cash. Because I hate to say it folks - KEDA doesn't hand out cash to just everybody, and they aren't approached very often going through the steps that I just outlined.
KEDA has helped with the CN project, and are involved with the Plasma Gasification project, and I'm sure some other things. But they are involved with SERIOUS business minded individuals that have the materials in hand that is required. Not just a rip snorting good idea, that all your drinking buddies tell you is a good idea.
Roj - please come on back to the light. I feel like Luke pleading to Darth Vader, "I still sense some good in you, I can feel it." Use the knowledge and wisdom of experience, and help mold these forum readers into a POSITIVE forwarding thinking mob.
We are fighting a 90 degree uphill battle against those that don't know any better, and those that don't want change. And we need to band together and help change attitudes, educate minds, and then collaborate and become cohesive.
Let's talk about what we TRULY know what we are talking about - and leave speculation and gossip for the fishing boat or the hunting shack.
Hornet, Calm down, son!! If...
Back to page topHornet,
Calm down, son!! If you haven't figured out by now, I like taking on the role of "devil's advocate", you know, "a person who upholds what is regarded as the wrong side or an indefensible cause, perversely or for argument's sake" or "one who argues against a cause or position, not as a COMMITTED opponent, but simply for the sake of argument". I do this alot of times when I feel there is no sense of wanting to get the ball rolling in the city of I-Falls. I do this in hope of getting people motivated in another way. Maybe, just maybe they will, get moving and say to themselves, "I'll show that roj2000, that we can get it done and turn this city around. But, I hear quite a few comments of "what is big brother going to give me to get my business running", or what is big brother going to give me to fix up my house". However you bring up very valid ways in which to get a business plan off the ground. But, remember, you can start 200 new businesses in the Falls, however, you need more jobs, and more workers, (with money) to SPEND the money in these new businesses. Or you need to attract people from out of the area and Canada to spend their money in the Falls. But you were right on about fighting an uphill battle against those that don't know any better, and just want things to stay the same as in the 50's and 60's. Well times have changed, and business strategies need to change also. Keep the comments coming, they are very productive and in contrast to mine (sometimes). It sounds like you live there, and have the ability to "network" with the locals alot better than some of us who only have the luxury of visiting often. But, that may change in a few years.
Yes. I agree. This is an...
Back to page topYes. I agree. This is an uphill battle regarding those who love the area and the city, but could do without the ignorance, uneducated masses of people with their uneducated kids, and those who don't want anything to ever change. Ever. Guess what? People are leaving. The people who are leaving are single, young adults who don't have kids, but have education, vision and talent - things that make a city grow, thrive and continue to be a place where people want to live.
This is the mistake I am seeing - this city is catered towards people with very low incomes and education levels who have children at very young ages, have very little ability to take care of them, and depend on local social service agencies to assist them. What needs to happen is the opposite - this city needs to be geared towards young people who are skilled, educated, who don't have kids yet, and are here to work or bring ideas here that nobody else seems to have the intelligence or ability to do. The last thing this town needs are more screaming kids hanging on to 20-year-old mothers who either can't or won't work. We need more things to do - that's for sure. We need a fitness center here. We need a YMCA or a YWCA here. We don't need any more churches, we don't need any more bars, and we don't need any more bowling alleys. We need places that bring the community together without judgment and without preachy values-laden attitudes that imply that somehow religion wins out over everything else. Look at any small dying town in Texas or New Mexico and you have basically the southern equivalent of International Falls. The mindset is the same way.
We don't need to take any lessons from other dying towns like Virginia or loser towns where nobody ever goes and nothing ever is going to happen. Duluth is the end of the line in terms of anything that happens at this end of the state. That's 165 miles away from here. If anything, we need to find out what people here need that they can only get in Duluth - and find a way to provide some of those services here. Whether it's a shuttle to SMDC - or a local provider of a service offered there or something like that - we need to somehow bridge this part of the world with a place where things are happening. That, I believe, is the only way we will grow. Education is the other thing. These two year colleges are a waste of time if you are looking for a career. The only people I see getting real, high paying jobs are those with 4 year degrees or masters degrees. There needs to be a way for people here to get those degrees online through the U of M or someplace else without having to move there to achieve that.
Anyone else?
Your right and AB/Backus...
Back to page topYour right and AB/Backus would make a wonderful YWCA or YMCA. A 4 year college would be 100 percent better than what we have and a tech school would be a great addition. I have blogged about this idea a few times and no one seems to care or respond. What do they get in Duluth? Well the opening weekend of deer season you could go to the mall in Duluth, Bemidji or even the mall of america and you will find our local women with their kids shopping. What for, everything and anything!!! I really don't think people go for a special item, they go to get away. To eat at a different place, go to the casino, maybe see a concert any number of things.
