Obama For President

What is your opinion of the candidate. Barack Obama, and the possibility that he may become the Democratic nominee for President?

I guess it all comes to down to your core beliefs and values, but it seems the country is hungry for change. That is why we see the popular choices to be either Obama or Huckabee. I personally think that it would be a great race. I am not sure the country can take another Clinton in the big chair anymore than it could take another Bush. McCain also brings many good, solid ideas to the table. My union has endorsed John Edwards, so I am just like a lot of people, still undecided. It is an exciting time for American national politics, new people, new ideas and hopefully a time of uniting our country to working together. That can happen with either a Democrat or Republican in office, by the way. I like Huckabee and the great ideas he has and the personal strength he has shown to a) run for President, b) lost over 100 pounds, c) take on the big boys of his party with less money and convince people that we can be conservative yet excited about our future. I like Obama because he is not the old guard of the Democrats. They leave you disappointed more often than not. Please share your ideas, thoughts and anecdotes on what promises to be a wild political ride.

I think he would make an excellent democratic nominee, and hope he would be an excellent president. I feel the same about Sen. Clinton. Richardson is not going to get the nomination, but I find him to be decent as well. Edwards is my least favorite of the 4, but I would also vote for him. I would like to see a Clinton/Obama ticket, or vice versa. My most important issues are the environment, women's issues and national security. Obama and Clinton are actually quite close on those issues (though Obama does try to distinguish himself on the Iraq situation; I don't find it terribly compelling, however, b/c he wasn't in the same position as Clinton when the Iraq vote occurred, so saying he was always opposed to the invasion means less to me--I was always opposed on a personal level all along, but can't say that I would necessarily have voted against the resolution authorizing force all those years back if I was in the U.S. Senate). I can't help but feel more comforted on the women's issues front (and no, not just talking abortion!!!) by a woman. Both score very high on environmental issues with LCV. Health care is also quite important to me, but I haven't been able to make a decision on how I feel we could improve it in this country...maybe if I do, that would swing my opinion of who I prefer.

On the republican front, I would honestly be able to support a McCain candidacy if he aligned with my views on women's issues. Can't get behind Huckabee...I find him to be personally appealing, but think he's an amateur...his comments concerning Pakistan after Bhutto's assassination spoke volumes to me. I also am leery of someone as president who interprets the Bible literally--not sure of his take on the actual age of the earth, but if he doesn't agree with mainstream geology, physics, chemistry, biology, etc...I don't want that person as the head of the Executive Branch (in effect, head of the NSF, NASA, etc...).

At any rate, I think Obama would be an excellent nominee. I am not compelled by the "change" argument, I don't give a hoot about "change," I want ability, intelligence, etc...that said, electing America's first black or first female president would be quite a change!! At any rate, I find him to be intelligent, thoughtful, creative, motivated, charismatic and having a very sound understanding of the laws of the nation that as president he would be responsible for executing (I believe he lectured Con Law in Chicago for a while...big bonus for me). His views are similar, in most cases, to mine. I would vote for him, and do so happily. But he's not currently my candidate of choice!

You ALL have got to be kidding, "President Obama"???? If that guy gets elected then I know this Country is headed down the sewer pipes!! My God, look at all the other qualified and "experienced" candidates in both parties. Granted, I must admit, that the Republicans have a little more to offer. But, why Obama?? Oh, I forgot, he's "blaaaaaaaaack"!! And we must use one of the ghetto catch phrases, "inclusion". That's right, you sheeple, he is black and therefore, he is "qualified", under the newly enacted, "reparations act" in which a fourth generation decendent of a slave, MUST be given anything they want, because they are "blaaaaaack"! First it was Hillary "the woman" must be elected, because she is a "feeeeeemale"! And now, let's just give it to Obama, because he is "blaaaaaaaack"!! Come on you "blue state" phonies, wake up, and pick someone who has some experience, and not just because they can fill one of your "quota's"!! I saw what your "inclusion" did to RRCC!!!! Keep it up, your frozen "Blue State" state is in "meltdown" from the "top on down"!!

Dude, roj . . . it's not like Obama's slinging crack, pimping "ho's" or "illuminating" the world, our intellects and our sensibilities with a diamond-studded platinum grill. I don't know where you get your stuff, roj. Who in the world except right-wing political fanatics is mentioning "inclusion"?

Based solely on Obama's ability to string a sentence together, I'd bet he could string together a rational thought better than your glorious leader who now sits forgotten and broken in the Oval Office. That alone puts him far and beyond GWB.

I don't like Obama, though. I think Hillary would have him assassinated. I'm for Ron Paul because I believe in preserving the word and the inspiration of the Constitution.

Joespoon04,

You are scaring me! I actually agree with most of what you just said!! I do think Obama is a nice gentleman, but let's wait until he's proven himself, in some "leadership" positions. It would be like electing Condo Rice to POTUS. A disaster!! If we MUST have "reparations" for the fourth generations of slaves, then let's get someone like Colin Powel! Guess what, he doesn't want the job, because he knows it is a bunch of BS, and he has better things to do with his life. Smart man!! I also like Ron Paul. But, you know what? He is too intelligent and qualified for the job, and therefore "scares the hell" out of the establishment, and therefore they will not even give him a chance. Just like Joe Biden, and many others that had to drop out. The "establishment" wants either a) people like Obama who will be a puppet for them, or b) one of their old cronies who is in the back pockets of the big companies. It's time we voted out the "old timers" and rebuilt Washington, DC. Besides, having a GYN Doctor in the White House might not be a bad idea!!

So let me get this straight. If Ron Paul was black would he have more or less experience than Obama? I'm confused here almost all the time because we seem to want to limit the presidency of this country to older white gentlemen, preferably Republicans, between the ages of 50 and sixty five. Everyone else is either too lesbian, too blaaaack, or too inexperienced.

VERY GOOD!! You read our posts correctly!! A blaaaaaaaack (with experience) in that age range, would do. An old lesbian senator or congresswoman from California would be kind of pushing it!! So that omits Boxer and Pelosi!! No, I take the Pelosi thing back. I think she is kind of HOT!! Just leans a little left for me, but I could straighten her out!

Sheesh! Since this comment is just under my response and the one above mine by norpole, I assume when you're asking if we're "ALL" kidding and "why obama" that you are including my post as well? I said he is not my pick of choice...I also said if he's the democratic nominee I'd vote for him and do so with confidence in his abilities. Why is he not my pick of choice at the time? Experience is part of it. I'm youngish, and while I am fabulous beyond all reason (kidding), I wouldn't vote me into office--I value experience and the wisdom that comes with a lifetime of learning and mistake making. I would vote for him confidently if he's the democratic nominee b/c I feel his intellect, education, and experience he DOES have should be sufficient (also, believe he's smart enough to get GOOD advisors and cabinet). Don't assume I would vote for a candidate based on their gender and/or color of their skin...I would never vote for Alan Keyes, I'd likely not vote for Jesse Jackson, and even though I think she is brilliant, I'd probably not vote for Condi Rice...all not running for pres right now, but you get my point.

Maybe with someone like Barack Obama, the country can leave the eight year nightmare known as "Bush 43". Maybe the country won't be run by special interest groups, the banks, the oil companies and the pharmaceutical manufacturers. Maybe we can get the troops out of Iraq and save the lives of men and women who deserve the very best from their country's leaders, not the worst. Maybe we can finally have national health care, the kind of excellent health care that VP Cheney gets whether you have pre-existing conditions or not. Maybe we can save our land from the companies who do not believe in environmentalism, and poison our air, land and water. Maybe we can find common ground with countries around the world without bombing them first. Maybe we can encourage businesses to show some initiative to grow without hurting the futures of the poor and the middle class. Maybe we can truly be the country we can be, without the hurdles and barriers that this administration has placed on all of us. Maybe Barack Obama is that person. Maybe Americans can be color blind for once when it comes to our future. As far as the country going down the sewer, that is too late, George W. Bush has already done that, and maybe Barack Obama can lead us out of the wilderness and into the light.

Hello norpole and everyone...

Back to page top

Hello norpole and everyone else,
In your comments above MAYBE was used a lot and rightfully so, b/c we can't for tell the future. But we can look at ones past. Let's look at RON PAUL's past , he is the one candidate who voted against the war, has NEVER voted to increase taxes or voted for an unbalanced budget, voted AGAINST congressman receiving a raise and is against the US intervening in foreign countries, (that means no nation building). Barack is completely the opposite.

Our freedoms are being reduced drasticly no other candidate supports the US Constition and the Rule of Law ( which means if it is law the government had better obey it) like Ron Paul.

WE do not need more government, we need less in fact RON PAUL is the only candidate who wants to reduce the federal government. THE ONLY ONE! Now is this man a threat to the establishment? ****** right he is. If you work for the fed you could, you might have to get a job in the private sector if Ron Paul gets elected. oh well. FOX News left him out of the Debate Saturday Night.............Why???? b/c he is a threat to that very establishment. Faux News. We report you decide! How can the good people of this nation make an informed descion when we don't have all the candidates and the facts?
Do yourself and everybody you know a favor and go to and read www.ronpaul2008.com and www.youtube.com him there is a ton of good info there. Videos from eLIB3RTY and aravoth are epecially informative.
The next 24 hrs are very important in New Hampshire, let us watch and see.
I look forward and welcome all feedback.

The thing about this thread...

Back to page top

The thing about this thread is that it's never going to really convince anyone to change their candidate--people choose their parties and in their parties because of their own personal positions on certain issues. So roj2000 getting upset about people's support of Sen. Obama as though he is a completely irrational candidate or this hearty endorsement of Ron Paul as the only one who obeys the rule of law don't tend to really "work" because that all depends on one's own view of the issues at hand. I made clear above what some of my high priority issues were, and the fact that I support the Democrats then should suggest to everyone what my positions on those issues are. If you disagree with my positions, then OF COURSE Obama and Clinton and Edwards, etc...seem like unreasonable candidates!! I'd find them to be bad candidates if I held views opposite of those I currently hold. So I guess in effect, while this thread is enjoyable to a certain extent, I hope we all realize that the whole "this guy is good! no this guy is better! no him! no her!" approach isn't really going to change minds...maybe (and that is a weak maybe) debating the issues themselves could, but people don't tend to change their minds terribly easily.

At any rate...Ron Paul--there is something appealing about him, I admit. If I was a republican, he might be one of my favorites, along with John McCain. As a libertarian, he does tend to represent the republican ideal of limited government quite well. It's possible that the limited government approach IS the better approach on more issues than it is not. For me, though, my personal focus on the environment and women's issues lead him to be an unappealing candidate. Believe me, I UNDERSTAND the importance of property rights in environmental issues. I probably understand them more than most people. The current problem with viewing that as THE approach to any and all environmental issues is that our free market economy has not yet been able to actually incorporate environmental valuation fully. I DON'T mean that "you big mean republicans don't value the environment!!"--I am literally talking dollars and cents. There is currently no reliable way to incorporate the fiscal value of certain environmental goods and services into the free market, and therefore, since there is no way to do it reliably, many of those are left out--THE overarching challenge of the free market is information--if you don't have full information, then the transactions can end up being inefficient--or not optimal. In lieu of perfect information, which we do not have, I tend to rely on stricter regulation. Flawed, yes, but I MYSELF find it to be the safest route. So I do not prefer Ron Paul. Also, my positions on women's issues do not align with Paul's.

Maybe a fun question to ask is, who on the "other" side do you like?? If you are a staunch republican, who do you "like" amongst the democrats? And vice versa? Or if not "like"--given this is an election and "your" side might lose, who of the "other" side might you best tolerate for the next 4 years?

Back to page top

Mark you have hit it right on the head. There is no doubt in my mind that Ron Paul would be an excellent president. He is strong on integrity, something both of the Clintons lack as inveterate liars. Hilary does not have the experience and neither does Obama, not by a long shot. I have no problem voting for a female or a minority, as long as they have the qualifications....find me one qualified and I have zero problem with them. If people really want to elect the best person as POTUS they owe it to themselves and this country to research ALL of the candidates with an open mind, and screw party lines, screw what your union tells you to do, your daddy, your wife, your physic dog, what ever. Do whats best for this country. Ron Paul has what it takes to keep America strong and Americans proud.

One nation under God

It also doesn't sit well with me that he took his oath of office on the Koran, and his father is a radical muslim in Kenya.

Back to page top

Well if it doesn't sit well with YOU that he took his oath on the Koran, just imagine how ticked off HE'LL be when he finds out about it! And all this time he thought it was a Bible!!!!!

LOL...we've resolved this issue on a different thread, Obama did not take his oath on the Koran, he took it on the Bible. As for the radical Muslim thing, again, likely not true, but you'd probably want to do your own research and not just take my word for it. At any rate, whatever brand of Muslim his father may have been (radical, moderate, non-practicing), he no longer IS...his father passed away in the 80's.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/muslim.asp

(the reference to the Bible v Koran oath is near the bottom)

As for the lack of international experience...I think I might concur.

For the record, I wish Presidents would place their hand on a copy of the Constitution when taking the oath of office!!! I think one of them may have...Taft? Adams? T. Roosevelt?
