Abortion Topic Discussion:

No votes yet

Okay everyone I'm writing a term paper on abortion and i need some help. There are certain things I'm trying to pin point once again. I have done some research and need help again. But please try not to fight once again!!!

Are women fully informed before they have an abortion?

Are women taken care after an abortion?

Why do you think abortion is such a hot topic?

Why arn't women shown ultra sounds before the abortion?

Why do doctors try to push women into an abortion if they know they are gonna have a mentally disabled child?

Why are women being lied to about it so often?

Do you think it's right or wrong?

In my personal opinion,...

Back to page top

In my personal opinion, abortions should only be allowed if its a case of Rape or Incest and or in the Even the child is diagnosed with some type of mental retardation or major physical deformity. The only other time besides listed above is if the Females life is in risk carrying the baby. I know im sitting on the fence but that is what i personally believe. I know a few women that have had abortions, and in one of those cases it was probably the best option, one of the other cases where the women had multiple abortions just because she didnt want any more children i think she should have gotten fixed instead of killing off multiple innocent life.

Back to page top

Hello Sarah! If I may offer an idea, why don't you research Roe vs. Wade, the 1973 decision that allowed abortion in America. Then look closely at both sides and why they fought so hard for their respective points. Maybe look into the religions that are in our town and call the local pastor, priest or clergy and ask them hard questions. Maybe you could look up the official positions by the Republican and Democratic parties. Look up the web site for NOW the women's movement. Then when you have read and studied all these facts, you can craft a term paper that you will be proud of and that can help you decide now and in the future how you truly feel, but as time goes on in one's life, we learn that not everything is black and white. Good luck, young lady!

I agree with norpole on this one, research is always important for term papers (I have written many) opinions only count as opinions and don't receive the same weight for term papers. Give yourself a lot of time for this research, and be sure to give credit where credit is due.

Norpole,

Isn't Roe -vs- Wade the decision that George Washington had to make on a cold winter night, long, long ago?? I could be confused!! How about "retro-active" abortions?? Now, there's a concept I'm all for!

Sarah, whatever you do, and I value your idea to ask for ideas for your term paper, please do not consider the opinion of Mr. roj2000 too seriously. He is a nice guy, the salt of the earth, but when it comes to giving advice, you're best off nodding and walking away from him. Again, best of luck and work hard, the teachers will reward you for it.

Have a good day, and best of luck to her!! I'm sure she can find plenty of Ladies to interview on the subject.

Very interesting topic, Sarah. You are to be commended for taking it on. I hope you intend to present a comprehensive approach.

Many states are now struggling with Parental Notification laws. ie. How young can a girl be and still undergo such a major surgery without at least notifying parents and/or guardians? It's my understanding that some states allow girls as young as 12 to undergo an abortion without notifying her parents.

It's already been brought up to you that the father can be totally left out of the situation. Would notification be unreasonable or advisable?

The only totally 100% innocent person with no say is the unborn baby.

It's not possible to competently argue that there is no life being destroyed. The argument is in the definition of life. The life process obviously begins at conception. The argument becomes at what point is it OK to kill the unborn life? A truly sensitive question since over 90% of abortions are simply post-conception birth control.

Well Sarah to add to the...

Back to page top

Well Sarah to add to the topic of your points you ask this is what i think.

1. Women are as informed as they want to be when it comes to an abortion, some think its not big deal while others do.

2. To my knowledge its an out patient procedure doctors go in scrap out the fetus and after awhile you go home, now in some cases women do die from complications from having this done. I think the women could be taken care of better to some extent never do they think of the emotional repercussions of having that sort of thing done, sometimes women rush into an abortion and later regret it.

3. Abortion is a hot topic because some people see it as taking human life.

4. Well i think women are shown ultra sounds when they are pregnant if one is performed I guess why they are not shown just before the abortion deals with the whole mental issue, Maybe if they did show that last ultra sound like before the abortion some women would not have it done.

5. Raising a child with a major handicap is not for everyone it costs alot of money and its a 24hour a day job no vacations, plus you have to think of the child's life, would you have wanted to be born if you knew you where born with say half a body or with the IQ of a Rock, spending most of your life in and out of hospitals unable to feed or dress yourself, being pocked fun of because of the way you look. I personally wouldn't nor would i want to bring that kind of a child in to this hate filled world.

6.See my first post.

Another thing you might want to look into that i always felt odd about is, Should the suspected father of said child have any say in the abortion. I know if i was the father of a child and my Girlfriend/ Wife / Mistress/ Friend with Benefits/ One Night stand was pregnant and aborted the baby without my consent i would feel robbed of being a father to that child.

thank you that was great!!! To the one though were i asked if they thought it would be right for a doctor to push someone with a mentally disable child (well they thought they were from that test they do) is that right or wrong thought i mean think about they have screwed up on that before and the kid turned out to be really smart what do you think of that now? BUT THANK YOU FOR THE REPLY!

Anyone Else Have Any Answers For My Questions????? :-)

Back to page top

If i was to be a parent and the doctors where going to tell me my child was going to have some type of major handicap i would get a second opinion from another doctor, if that doctor said the same thing i would go see a specialist for whatever they said my child was to have, if they say the same thing i would probably believe them then and not question it any further, In the end it all goes down to personal choice and can you live with the decisions you make, could all three doctors be wrong yes they can, will you know for sure if you have an abortion nope you will never know then.

The chances of a doctor...

Back to page top

The chances of a doctor diagnosing an unborn baby with a mental disablity, I assume you mean Down's Syndrome, and being wrong is very rare. The tests that are done are quite accurate and more than one are done. A nuchal translucency screening test is given at 12 weeks, quad screen at 17 weeks, a person also has the choice of having chorionic villus sampling (CVS) at 11 weeks or an amniocentesis about week 17. The first two are just screens and assess a baby's risk for certain problems. The other two tests are more than 99% accurate in dertermining chromosomal problems like down's and Trisomy 18.

As far as a doctor pushing someone to have an abortion I think that is probably more the impression the person got. An honest Dr. will inform a patient of all available options. My wife and I have waited for the results of the tests twice now and I have to tell you it can be nerve racking. I couldn't imagine how hard it would have been to deal with the diagnosis of a severe chromosomal problem let alone have an abortion pushed at us also.

I suppose it's possible but the chances of a correctly done amnio or CVS to be wrong is very very slim. Either that or the doctor didn't know that human chromosomes are dipliod and not tripliod.

Back to page top

Sarah,

I said I wouldn't comment on this issue, but I think that real thought can be directed towards the issue of self-awareness; i.e. why do we put down dogs so easily and callously when they've had days, months and years running around forming opinions about their interactions with the world, and meanwhile, give so much credibility to what is often a miniscule cluster of cells acting biochemically like a parasite on a host and absent the neural pathways on which we create our identities once we start differentiating ourselves from the world in the first year of life?

Meanwhile, much of the third world is overpopulated and starving because of the impact of religious dogma and cultural habits on reproduction, women worldwide are having their fathers' and brothers' children, and some people only pretend to want abortion abolished so they can put rifles in the kids' hands and send them off to war.

And then, of course, if you look from above at the major cities of humankind, you'll see them growing and spreading tendrils every year, issuing black clouds and the stink of progress, and laying waste to the hillsides and rivers and oceans all around. In that sense, in a world that is still very much alive, in what way are we NOT a growing cancer on it?

I suppose I just care more about the welfare of dogs than I care about keeping a non-self-aware cluster of cells from dying when its LEAST pleasant option will be the event of its death when it's actually conscious.

Good luck Sarah.

Sarah,

I admire the topic you chose for your paper. And I have enjoyed reading the variety of responses on this blog. I wanted to point out that the prior post argues FOR the killing of children because of overpopulation. The "overpopulation" argument is a common argument for abortion and is one that you might want to address in your paper. Is overpopulation a good argument? Why or why not?

And nevermind the post about talking to your English teacher about your writing abilities. Most of us understand that you are on here to gather information, not write your Master's thesis.

Good luck!

You might also want to find information on PAS, post abortion syndrome. Although PAS has not been recognized by the American Psychological Association it is closely related to Post Traumatic Stress disorder, which is recognized by "professionals". Just another thing to consider!

Frog and Toad, by making a young lady settle for less than her best, and referring to my post in a dismissive fashion, you are unwittingly a part of the destruction of Western Civilization. Proper grammar, well spoken words and clear, concise thoughts, well researched, are supposed to be the norm not the exception and if she was doing her Master's thesis and asked her questions as she did, she would be summarily dismissed as one who needed much more training in the basics of English than could be accomplished in the time frame of doing her term papers. Why don't you forget the sniping and encourage her to do her BEST, not what you think is good enough for your sensibilities.

Sarah, I have to at least...

Back to page top

Sarah, I have to at least address in some small way the idea of the world being currently overpopulated. It would seem that overpopulation would be the strongest reason for abortion on demand, but as John/Jack has pointed out the culture of most third world countries prevent it. More than culture is the survival of the very families who have a lot of children. Most of the time these families depend of having many male children to be able to support the parents when they become old. Even if abortion was available to them most would reject it as decreasing thier security in their old age. The world is also capable of producing more food than it currently does, nearly 1/3 to 1/2 of crops are eaten by insects and rodents. As far as having living space, there is still plenty of underpopulated places availalble for development. And then there is the world's oceans, where even more secrets lie hidden to be discovered and put to use to help us feed, clothe, shelter and heal ourselves. It's a weak arguement for a poor policy. Secondly, the world's richest countries are the greatest providers of abortion on demand. As far as I know only China does more abortions than the United States, and a great majority of theirs are not done by the choice of the women there. I would give you the research that has led me to these ideas, but I feel that would be doing the work you should be doing.
The facts are out there to back up my conclusions, not really all that hard to find (I do my homework) and very helpful.

Sarah, there's a perspective on all of this that I think you're not hearing. Johnathan Swift, in 1729, put together a reasonable solution to most problems this blog is trying, but failing, to address. It was called "A Modest Proposal" and I have yet to hear any sane arguments against the methodology it encourages.

Wow ! This thread has...

Back to page top

Wow !
This thread has really brought out the best of some of us.
Sara, in my opinion, women do not get the pre and post procedure counseling that they probably should have. I feel that a woman/mother and man/father should know all the facts about the conditions of both the mother and baby/fetus before a decision is made to prevent that " lump of cells" from becomming a person. In the recent past I recall debate about whether to inform women considering abortion that the baby/fetus is able to feel pain at the time of the procedure. I don't know if I'm a " prolife-er " or not, but it seems to me that as human beings we should be aware of facts like that.
After the procedure women are left to figure it all out and deal with whatever emotions they may have. I am sure that there are a number of women who do not deal or heal properly and are left with both physical and emotional scarring for the rest of their lives. What does that scarring do to their future relationships? Will the woman ever be whole again? And on the reverse of that....what about the woman who " willy nilly" has abortions as birth control. Will she ever be a whole person?
I have very strong opinions regarding medical professionals " pushing" women into abortions. As a person who has interacted with special needs people of all ages I simply can not look at any of them and think that they should not be alive. I feel it just simply is not for me to say who should be given a chance at life and who should not. Who am I to say that the simple pleasure of a breeze on the face of a " retarded" person isn't enough to make their life worth living.
I fear that I'm getting on my soap box and as the subject leaves me with unpleasant thoughts I will end with a wish for enlightenment for you. This is a broad subject of public opinion and may be difficult to summarize into a term paper length report. Good luck to you. Keep us posted
