Malaise in an Election Year

Filed under:

No votes yet

A year ago on this blog, we were all getting ready for the all-school reunion. And getting ready for the long primary season leading up to the elections of 2008. It was exciting.

This week, the lights have dimmed on this old site. Whereas VikesFan was getting the discussion rolling on language-learning and immigrants a year ago, I am wondering this year where all of our energy went. It can't be that we are bored by the prospect of Barack Obama and John McCain, could it? Or Norm Coleman against Al Franken and maybe even Jesse the Body?

My suspicion is that most of the regulars might be watching the soccer matches of Euro2008 and just don't have time or energy to blog. I will be watching Spain and Russia in an hour myself as they determine who will go up against the Germans in the final match. For Europe, soccer seems to have taken the place of war. So while they get soccer, all we are left with is the very boring Global War on Terror, that quasi-war dreamed up by our fairly boring vice president from the really boring state of Wyoming. Cheney. He's turned a whole nation into mush just like we knew he would.

The parade and festivities...

Back to page top

The parade and festivities of the Fourth were really aided by some spectacular weather --- a moment of warming in a generally cool summer -- and a generally well-planned day. Of course, the parade is the highlight, mainly for the chance it gives to interact with friends and neighbors during the endless procession of emergency vehicles. Instead of endless candy, it was refreshing to see flags for kids as a major subtheme. It must be an election year.
I enjoyed my usual perch in front of Len Millard's third street retreat and really appreciated it when he brough out chairs for the old-timers. And I don't mean Anton65 although he stopped by as did the mayor. There is now a Len Millard picture floating around of the three of us but I suspect she would not want that published, especially in an election year.
I was kind of hoping to run into six-shooter, schmitty, gopher, or any number of the denizens of this digital home town. And maybe I did and just didn't know it. A few people asked about roj as though I would know him if I saw him. My response is that the true American patriots are all staying down south and probably getting to bid farewell to Senator Jesse Helms, that great patriot.
Anyway, the streets of International Falls are clean and quiet, but still dangerous, and we are all waiting for the Monday Journal to discover what we all experienced over the weekend. And that is just enought to get me out of the library and over to Menards, my favorite store.

TLJ, Glad the July 4th...

Back to page top

TLJ,

Glad the July 4th parade was an outstanding success!! You're right, I had to stay down south and send one of our fine Senator's off to the "promised land"!! I would have loved to have been in the Falls for the 4th, but I had a feeling the possee was out looking for me. Heard rumors there was a rope hanging over a tree next to Smokey Bear. LOL It would have been an honor to wheel some of you "seniors" up and down 3rd street and around smokey bear park!! My wife still can't get over the 4th celebration up there in 2002 when she saw someone with a red, white & blue chicken, on a leash. She said she'd never seen anything like that in Knoxville County, Tennessee. Yeah right! Too bad some of the "denizen's" of this site, couldn't come out and say hi!! Maybe, just maybe we will have to get a DJ blogger's convention put together after all. Thanks for the 4th update!!

Now that the fourth is over,...

Back to page top

Now that the fourth is over, we have said goodbye to summer and are wearing turtlenecks for the trip over the water and drinking hot stuff at Coffee Landing just to get the blood flowing. It got up to 68 degrees yesterday and may get that warm today if everyone does what I did yesterday: burn those brush piles that have been lying around. There is zero fire-danger here.
My brother and his family came out to visit last night and he was decked out in his snowmobile suit. He is more committed to the global warming theory than I, so this is a hard pill to swallow. This may just be one of those summers when the third week of July spells the end of swimming and we start the downward spiral into winter just as the election starts to heat up. So, roj, laud old Jesse. I suspect that he was transported immediately to heaven like most of the patriarchs of the bible, so the coffin will just be a formality. He and Lee Atwater will likely be directing the republican campaign from above as it is beginning to look like McCain is the chosen candidate of the so-called Christian right [Dr. Dobson]. And that will make it hard for Mr. Obama to steal a state or two in the South.

Dear Thomas and Anton -

It was a delight to see you on the Fourth of July at Len's house. I am proud of the picture Len took of all of us and I would be very happy to see it included within my re-election campaign brochure. : )

Yours in respectful community service -

Mayor Shawn Mason

I wouldn't wait for that...

Back to page top

I wouldn't wait for that photo. Len has more undeveloped film than most of us have film and he generally waits until it's time for an obituary to develop the roll. So you're just going to have to wait. Suffice it to say that Anton looks just like he did 40 years ago, except matured. I look just like I did 40 years ago, except inflated. That line I stole from a departed member of the class of 65, Ann Johnson. We met on Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis sometime in the 70's -- what a wonderful decade that was -- and she said without a smile: "You look just like Tom Johnson, except inflated." We all change -- except celebrities. They aren't allowed to. So Ringo Starr and John McCartney are pushing 70, Cher is pushing 65, and Charlie's Angels are about 60. And they look great. My only chance is to become a celebrity and I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon. So you are just going to have to come up to the Falls some year for the Fourth, roj.

First question: who is "John McCartney"?? TLJ, you already ARE a celebrity, so you had better let some air out!! But, I will make plans to hopefully get up there for the 4th next year. I still like the idea of a DJ Blogger's reunion/get together!! I still have my Bush tax rebate check, so I'll save it for my air fare (plus checked baggage fee).

There were a lot of Beatles...

Back to page top

There were a lot of Beatles -- if you include Peter Best and Billy Preston -- but there was no John McCartney [there was a John McCarthy, but that was something entirely different]. I am old enough to remember and old enought to forget. I was in high school when the British invasion took place and remember when Margaret Sathrum pushed back to tables and let us dance [theoretically] in study hall. The next day, F. Miles started sending guys home for combing their bangs down like Paul McCartney. My crew-cut stood tall and proud but that was the end of the bristle-top for most of us.
A couple of years ago, when George Harrison died, one of my younger friends, a regular on Public TV's Almanac, asked me who he was. I told her about the Fab Four and then added that his death was the second from my favorite musical group. "You mean the Beatles?" she asked. "No, the Traveling Wilbury's." That group had five members, all of them so famous that they didn't put their names on their first CD. Who were they?

Welcome back, Doorsman. Although Anton claimed to know your real analog identity, I pressed him on it yesterday and he admitted he had no clue. Then his eight year old beat me in pinball. Over and over again. Another reason to stay away from third graders.

Thanks TJ, I have been here,...

Back to page top

Thanks TJ, I have been here, listening(reading), waiting, fishing, working, going insane over this weather and again waiting till all heck breaks loose to get stomped on, I kind of like it sometimes. Anyway, lots of Beatles, 4 Doors with studio help(one dead of course,...or is he?) and one Roj 2000, .......or is there more? I am surprised that Roj hasn't commented on the "another reason to stay away from third graders", comment, he is ususally quick on the wit, but their ability to stomp at video and pinball is reason enough in my eyes. Have a good weekend everyone.

I second the motion to welcome back, Doorsman54 (whomever you are). How bout some more hints on your identity!! TLJ and I are anxious to find out who you are. I have my suspicions, (ie- Big Island Sheriff ties, shallow water cabin location, etc....). But, if you are who I think you may be, don't let my "big brother" influence your decision to "out yourself" to me!! TLJ and the "third grader" comment are safe from my verbal jousting!! I'm still trying to win in the game of "are you smarter than a fifth grader"!
