He was raised by his grandparents and grew up on a farm in Grove Lake, Minn.<br /> He served in the United States Navy during World War II. When he returned to the states in 1946, he started farming in the Grove Lake area until he moved to International Falls in 1952. In International Falls he started working for the MD&amp;W Railroad and was the yard master.
