Ok, at first I thought you were merely making the Pascal's Wager argument...that you'd rather believe b/c if you are "right" then the expected "payoff" of your belief is life in some sort of hereafter; if you're wrong, then it didn't matter anyway. If you don't believe and you're right, then that also doesn't matter, but if you're wrong, then you're definitely hosed. I understand this argument, though I have never found it to be terribly compelling. It's not going to get a non-believer to believe, b/c you aren't really going to give someone faith by presenting some sort of odds scheme. But then you say that your believing makes you a better husband, father, etc...if that's the case for you personally, then great--I'd rather have you have faith and be a better person. I just hope you're not trying to make the argument that having faith in general makes one a better person. I have no religious faith, yet I am honest, hardworking, loving, charitable, socially concerned, etc...and there are plenty of religiously faithful people who are not only NOT good people, but who also use their faith to try to justify really bad behavior (KKK anyone??)

I rarely get offended by random discussions such as these...if you were applying your logic to just your own situation, then that's fine, but please watch that you don't end up making a blanket statement about faith...a decent person is a decent person all around, regardless of their faith or lack thereof. And a jerk is a jerk, regardless of their faith or lack thereof. Has more to do with how you were raised than what you believe.

(Isn't there a poetry and a beauty in reducing to a phrase the sentiment that perpetuates these blogs? I've essentially made a verbal caricature of reality that people have begun to treat as real.
