Well I happen to remember Marie as a nice, simple lady. She didn't have many people that cared and she was particular about things but if you live to be 95 you have ever right to be picky! She was a great woman and is deeply missed...

As I posted my daily

As I posted my daily comment, sitting as I do in the public library, I saw the name, Marie Knudson, and realize that I can't let her passing go by without a reverent bow in her direction. She was not a nice lady, not a patient lady, but she was fierce about her library and her books and her feeling that they mattered. She used to keep lists of books you should read before college at the circulation desk. Once I began reading the 100 or so recemmended books she was very interested in getting my opinions about them. And she once advised me, correctly, not to spend too much time on Thomas Wolfe. She was an elitist in the Carlton sense of that word, but I count her as one of the influences -- along with Hannah Rosenberg -- that made that dangerous walk from Publican land at Alexander Baker across Catholic Land at St. Thomas well worth the effort, even if it mean going fist to fist with those knights of the church named Micheletti, Oettinger, Sether, Grandaw. So long, Miss Knudson.

"Bags" was definitely "Old School". You either shaped up or shipped out in his classes. Easy to rile or smile, is how I remember him. Right now there are some lazy angels being whipped into shape I'm sure. Thanks for the memories, lessons and times you gave and had with us Sir. My condolences to the Haglund Family in your loss of a very special Man.

Mega diddo's TLJ!! What a gentle giant, and nice man! And he sure could give you a work out! A couple times in recent years, I and my family sat next to him and a group of guys at Barney's and had breakfast. It was hard to watch such a strong man, starting to turn into an old man. Old age was taking a toll on his body, but he was still strong at heart. It was an honor to introduce my grown children to this wonderful man, who kept us in line (back when a teacher was allowed to plant a foot in your backside). Rest in peace, Mr Haglund, "you earned it"!!

One of the greats. I was happy to be able to speak to him several times in recent years and will be forever thankful for the positive influence he had on the lives of the young men he coached and mentored in his years in the Falls. We will truly miss Wayne Haglund.

As a Air Force Veteran I was going to leave a tribute to Chief Valentine, but the above poem pretty much sums it all up for me. May God welcome the Chief to His home, and comfort those who mourn Chief Valentines presence here on earth. I wish I had the honor of knowing him.

The Final Inspection
The

The Final Inspection

The sailor stood and faced God
Which must always come to pass
He hoped his shoes were shining
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, you sailor
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"

The sailor squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't
Because those of us who carry guns
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays
And at times my talk was tough,
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But I never took a penny
That wasn't mine to keep ...
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep,

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here,
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod
As the sailor waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God,

Step forward now, you sailor,
You've borne your burdens well,
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."
================================

I did not know the Senior Chief - but either did most of the others that have responded here:
http://www.patriotguard.org/ALLForums/tabid/61/forumid/29/tpage/1/view/T...

My heart truly goes out to the family during this tough time.

Fair Winds and Following Seas Shipmate!

Another Icon gone from the Falls, a loss for anyone who knew him or had him in school. Roj 2000 put it right, to learn and listen to Bill Cosby at the same time, isn't education fun and Ray made that happen. Did any of you know that Ray,(he was a Seabee, the outfit that navy seals came out of) watched the Enola Gay and painted the nose art on a plane that escorted Boxcar to Nagaski, take off from Tinean Island and was one of the first Americans to set foot on then unoccupied Japan before the Army or Marines and watched, from Japanese soil the Missouri sail by on its way to Tokyo harbor for the signing of the peace treaty. A quiet man of peace that saw his share of horror. Goodbye to a great man.
