Agitated grad...to tell you the truth, you are completely wrong. The Falls VFW coach has done a wonderful job coaching this year and should be credited not criticized. Ask any player on the team this year and see what they say..half (at least) will say they thought he was the best coach they've had in baseball. Now for the uniforms part. You got it all wrong...do you think its their fault that they have differing uni's? No, its not. It's not the kids responsibilty to get matching uni's, its the VFW's...see the connection there? VFW baseball? And so what if they don't have the same jerseys or pants or hats? That doesn't mean anything, all they wanted was to play the game. Another thing, the hairstyles?? Come on. Look at any baseball team in the country. Do they have the same hair styles? Absolutely not. By the way, this is only summer league VFW baseball, it's just for fun, it's not the MLB. Truthfully, I think for you to go out of your way and criticize young baseball players for individualism it is unreal and immature.

I understand the VFW team has enjoyed some success this year, so I am slow to give criticism. Saying that, I would like to offer a little bit of advice to the head coach:

Discipline is not something to shy from. GEN Douglas MacArthur once said "upon the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that on other fields, on other days will bear the fruits of victory." Though the general was clearly speaking of athletics as a metaphor for warfare, it is easy to translate his feelings to everyday life. Lessons learned on playing fields clearly apply to corporate conference rooms and business offices.

Kids who grow and learn in the VFW program set themselves up for more success in later days than kids who spend their time playing video games, or "chilling on the lake." Wearing differing uniforms (even different uniform pants and hats), individualizing themselves through their hair styles (and facial hair) and untucking their jerseys is a great way for adolescents to step apart from their peers. These are also excellent ways for young men to avoid learning the lessons GEN MacArthur was speaking of.

Discipline is not punishment - it is the inherenet feeling in an individual to do the right thing when nobody is looking. Allowing young men to disrespect their team by failing to adhere to a common standard ensures discipline will be an afterthought on a summer baseball team.

I sincerely hope the VFW will work towards fielding a team of young men who are dedicated to not only winning, but also who are interested in learning and growing as young men.

Men under the age of 17 will not come to these conclusions on their own; they will need someone to guide them in the right direction. Hopefully their coach will step up to the plate and provide the guidance they need.

Thanks for the keen insight on the Twins, Joe! You are doing a good job providing coverage and I like the occasional personal touch. The Twins will be OK over the long run because of one man, Manager Ron Gardenhire. He seems to make things work even when it seems impossible. As to having to pay a lot for packages to see the old ball club, most teams like to gouge the local fans and then act like it is business as usual. This is why a minor league team like the St. Paul Saints are actually a better bargain for seeing baseball. Keep up the good work, Joe and I look forward to more of your sporting insights.

Why was there nothing in the paper about the adult hockey tourney @ kerry park amonth ago? were you not covering it? the tourney brings in lots of money to kerry park and people would like to know how it went. it is way to early to be critizing the twins. how did you get this job?

I too say Go Wild! It is too bad that I had to pay for an expensive special package just to watch the game last night, but I am glad I did.
I hope that the new guys will work out for the Twins. I think Hunter is at his best in a contract year and Santana will be hard to replace, but if these guys can get it done and keep everyone excited it will be good for the team.
Hopefully the new stadium will provide the revenue that is apparently not there and in the future the team will be able to retain the stars and get aggressive in the free agent market.
