Rainy Lake — along with some local faces — will be featured in national advertisements for Suzuki Motor Corporation, thanks to the efforts of an area businessman. Fred Woods, owner of Fred’s Marine Center in Ranier, made the announcement this week to the International Falls Area Chamber of Commerce.
Winners of the $500 scholarships for the Timber Talk Essay contest are Laurie Dion, a senior at Falls High School and Heather Marklund, a senior at Indus High School.

Frank Sinatra, the brash, young idol who became the premier romantic balladeer of American popular music and the “chairman of the board” to millions of fans, died of a heart attack yesterday. He was 82.

The Broncos’ Scott Jean was a double winner as the Broncos finished second in a triangular meet at the Falls High outdoor track. Jean won the long jump competition with a leap of 20 feet, 4 inches, and won top honors in the high jump with a mark of 6 feet.

Irving L. Sher, 56, a well-known International Falls businessman, died today at Veterans’ Hospital in Minneapolis from complications of heart disease.

Until eight months ago, Tim Scholler’s only experience with Africa were the pictures and articles he saw in National Geographic. That was before the 26-year-old joined the Peace Corps and traveled to western Africa.
There will be a baby shower for Emily Lou Knaeble, newborn daughter of Keith and Jill Knaeble tomorrow, 7 p.m., at Littlefork Apartments.

The Grand Rapids Wal-Mart store associates are helping a local high school senior realize a dream by awarding a $1,000 scholarship. Heather Marklund recently received a scholarship as part of the Sam Walton Community Leader Award program, sponsored by the Wal-Mart Foundation of Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
Mary Louiseau was presented a candle, lit in memory of her late husband at the recently held Lions Club midwinter convention memorial service. Gil had been a Lions Club member for many years. Presenting the award was Dan Kroeten, charter member.
