Trevor Plasky has been to Washington, D.C. before, but he expects the next visit to be different. Plasky plans to attend the inauguration of the next president of the United States.
The Falls High School junior said he is looking forward to attending the Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference when he will attend the inauguration, watch the inaugural parade and attend a black tie gala inaugural ball.
Plasky said his parents are excited about the opportunity. He said he is looking forward to hearing Lance Armstrong speak to the students attending the conference.
Plasky’s family is conducting a car wash from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 14 in the First Lutheran Church parking lot to help raise money for the trip.
Certain aspects of politics are fine to Plasky, but he said he doesn’t know if he could “handle all the bureaucracy” of being a politician. Instead, he said he is interested in perhaps being an aide to a politician.
Plasky was invited to the conference after he attended the National Youth Leadership Conference in March in Washington, D.C. The conference was packed with activities to teach participants about the federal government. Plasky said he “learned a lot.”
“My brain was overloaded,” he said.
Among the activities he took part in was a press conference and meeting his federal representatives. Plasky said he was impressed by offices of U.S. senators, where he was able to talk to the aides of Sen. Norm Coleman and Sen. Amy Klobuchar. Sitting in chairs at the House of Representatives was “cool,” he said.
During the conference, a model Congress was conducted and participants voted on bills, wrote amendments and held caucuses. Students also were given a mock international event, which they had to work together to find the best solution for the issue.
