Columbus Day closure
The Solid Waste Transfer Station/Recycling Center will be closed Monday in observance of Columbus Day. Normal operating hours are Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, contact the Koochiching County Environmental Services Department at 283-1157.

Elks meal
The Elks Lodge Wednesday Meal will feature Authentic German at 6:30 p.m. tonight. Call early for reservations at 283-3440.

Religious Education
Religious Education Mass and registration for First Reconciliation and Confirmation Grades 2 and 7-11 is planned for 7 p.m. tonight at St. Thomas Aquinas Church

Phone recycling
Borderland Humane Society is currently participating in a cell phone recycling program. By recycling old cell phones, the humane society can receive money for the old phones, with all proceeds going to BHS. The community is urged to help by donating phones to help animals in need. Phones may be dropped off at The Daily Journal, Radio Shack or K-104/KGHS Radio Station. Anyone with questions may call 218-324-2313.

‘Serenity Sisters’
The Women’s A.A. gathering, “Serenity Sisters,” will meet at noon Friday at the Backus building, Rational Alternatives Room 101.

Women’s workshop
The 11th annual “Take Charge — It’s Your Life! A Women’s Wellness Workshop,” will be conducted Thursday at Backus Auditorium. Barbara McAfee will present on “Who You Gonna Be While You Do What You Do?” Registration is from 6 to 6:30 p.m. There is no charge. Everyone is welcome.

Fifty-Five potluck
The Fifty-Five Plus of Evangelical Covenant Church, 1631 First Ave., E., will gather for a potluck at 6 p.m. Monday. Ted Francis will be singing. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Music presentation
“Borderland Pioneers” will be featured from 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday during the lunch at Koochiching County Senior Center.

Moose events
A fish fry is planned for 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Moose Lodge. Saturday, the bar opens at 9 a.m. with a District meeting set for 9:30 and a Legion meeting at 1 p.m. There will be no Bingo. A barbecue rib supper will be served at 6 p.m. Reservations are needed and may be made by calling 283-3615.
