The International Falls City Council tonight is expected discuss a request by Koochiching County for a change in county state aid highway mileage status to allow for the proposed reroute of the northern entrance of Minnesota Highway 332.
The council meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the council chambers at the Municipal Building.
The council is expected to discuss a report by the Crookston engineering firm of Widseth, Smith and Nolting about the Highway 332 proposal. The council has asked the firm to review the planning and cost estimates provided by the county on several issues dealing with the county’s proposal.
Among the issues the firm has reviewed, and the council is expected to discuss, are:
• New construction of 0.6 miles of road that would essentially follow the alignment of Moonlight Rock Road, also known as County Road 144, from existing Highway 332 north to Highway 11.
• Possible construction of a road east from existing Highway 332 and then north to the Foreign Trade Zone in lieu of the above proposal.
• Possible combined construction of both a new road from Highway 332 north to Highway 11, and a road from Highway 332 to the FTZ.
In other business tonight, the council is scheduled to hear a report from the Economic Development Committee, which is expected to recommend that the council provide a commercial loan to Reuben and Peggy White, doing business as White’s Rental Service. The committee is also scheduled to report on a proposal by DSGW regarding development of a headquarters for Voyageurs National Park on city-owned property along the Rainy River and Highway 11 East.
The council is also scheduled to respond to the Koochiching Economic Development Authority Board’s request for input on priorities for economic and community development, as well as respond to the county board’s request for input on a new development ordinance.
In addition, the council is scheduled to consider joint meetings between the council and county board.
The council meeting includes a time for audience participation shortly after the beginning of the meeting, and is scheduled to conclude with reports of the administrator, attorney, department heads, mayor, and councilors.

Back to page topCouncil Meeting Canceled-- Has anybody heard when the City Council meeting will be re-scheduled and/or if the agenda will be as was scheduled for last night? This would have been a "meaty" discussion with time for lots of public input on various topics. Public attendance would have been higher then usual for the last nights meeting.

Back to page topAnton, not sure what you are referring to.
The Falls Council meeting went on as scheduled Monday, April 7.
A committee meeting of the Falls school board, scheduled for Monday, was canceled. I do not know if it has been rescheduled or will be included in the April 21 school board meeting agenda.

Back to page topSorry Laurel, I mis-read the red bold face at the top of the blog heading and had assumed it was also referring to the cancelation of the City meeting where the cancelation was posted. Thanks for your interest in correcting me.

You need to stop scaring those young folks on the council, or they'll never hold another meeting!! LOL

Back to page topWell roj, I think the International Falls city council is doing just fine, so is the county and the company. The three C's are geting to work together for the betterment of our nice little community and working some issues out that might become reasonably effective in the next year for everyone that lives here. Its certainly okay to protect ones pocketbook and a partership is a good way to do that and make everyone feel that they are an "equal".
The FTZ might very well become a very major jobs and income producer for the area and at least more folks are considering the possibilities the FTZ could bring. I haven't many complaints even if I don't agree with all procedural methods someone else might choose to use to accomplish the result. Things are not actually going bad at all. It certainly is noted that about every office in the county and city are thinking out loud and thats very much appreciated and working quite well. Everyone should thank those elected in our local government whenever they find the opportunity to find a reason to do so.
I am sure the city attorney will ensure the local residents get "fair" value for "fair" value. Has anybody thought about a summer holiday like the old "Timbertennial" celebration we used to do. It might work with the "Bass Tournament" and both could compliment each other and bring each up a notch.
I would like the city and company to "consider" the option of another 332 access to Hwy 11 thru the old pulp storage area for our future access requirements. I still think a 1-1/2 mile space between access routes is a bit much for our needs in the future.
