A public meeting for Littlefork-Big Falls students and their parents regarding the consequences of cell-phone text messaging and other technology usage will be held at 6 p.m. Monday in the L-BF Media Room.

The L-BF School Board discussed the issue Wednesday, according to Shelley Williams, business manager for District 362.

“Cyber Safety Night” will be presented by L-BF technology coordinator Frank Hank, for the purpose of informing students and families on the potential consequences of texting, twittering, and other cyber-sent communication, Williams said. She added that board member John Mastin told the board that it is mandatory for some digital histories to be saved up to two years, and may cause problems for students long after the original correspondence.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend Monday’s meeting.

In other business, the board discussed a recommendation by the Nutrition Committee for a trial removal of pop machines inside the school. Ongoing improvements at L-BF have included better nutrition in school lunches as well as the addition of a soup and salad bar in the cafeteria. The school was a recipient of a portion of Koochiching County’s SHIP grant, because of its positioning regarding improved nutrition for students.

The board appointed the Miller McDonald accounting firm for its 2009-10 audit.

Advertising for open enrollment was also discussed, and would likely be ordered in May, according to Williams.

Topics of discussion on capital outlay projects, introduced by the Building and Grounds Committee, included the possible additions of a hearing-impaired audio system for the high school, a new floor scrubber, pulled utility carriers for buses, and aesthetic updates to the L-BF football scoreboard.

Board members Anita Gray and Monte Nelson were absent Wednesday.
