LITTLEFORK — The Littlefork-Big Falls School prom was as much a community event as it was a most special night of the year for 54 students.
Parents and friends filled the bleachers to standing room only to watch the young men and women all dressed in their finest go through the annual ceremony grand march.
Littlefork-Big Falls High School Dean of Students Christopher Bachmeier welcomed guests and read off names of the students as they came through the gym that they decorated in black and silver to fit its theme, “A Night Under The Stars.” He said the students and volunteers put together the elaborate set in three days.
Mark Hoverland and Kalei Reimer were named king and queen by their fellow students.
Hoverland said a few of the students campaigned for him to become king, and that he was very excited with the honor. He played basketball and participated in the spring play.
Reimer said that with only two senior student women, she was given prom queen after her counterpart was named homecoming queen. However, she said she was just as moved by the honor and the prom night. She is editor of the yearbook staff, a captain of the cheerleading squad and participated in the spring play.
Both students plan to attend Bemidji State University in the fall. Hoverland is going into business administration and Reimer into Elementary Education.
School Board Chairman Monty Nelson and his wife April were both honored with flowers for their work in helping organize the event. They in turn thanked the many volunteers and for financial contributions from local business in Littlefork, Big Falls and the Falls.
The students were paraded as couples and in groups before camera flashing parents. The array of dress varied greatly from traditional regal pastel gowns to flowery Pacific Island silk to a sultry downtown look. The men wore both dark and light and several colors in between. Some wore hats and their shirts or ties matched the color of their partner’s gown.
The public portion of the event concluded with a surprise invitation for parent’s of the prom participants to come down and dance with them. Following the ceremony, the students and chaperones had the gym to themselves. After midnight, the students had the option to stay in school for an overnight lock-in with games and music until the early morning hours.
