Monday
• Visitors to the Koochiching County Fair in Northome had a rainy start to the event. But that didn’t stop children from bringing their projects and exhibitors from showing their items.
• The Learning Tree, a project by the Evangelical Covenant Church, helps students who would otherwise have to go without, to get new supplies and clothes for the next school year. Children's names and needs are written on paper cut-outs of apples, and those who wish to sponsor a child donate the requested items.
• Koochiching Aging Options and the Rainy River Community College green and sustainable construction program were recipients of grants from the Otto Bremer Foundation.
• In the latest installment of The Johnson Journals, Don Johnson goes on a diet and anticipates a trip to New York.
• The weather at the Minnesota Vikings training camp may have been damp, but that did not stop fans and the players from enjoying the experience.
Tuesday
• Young readers danced in the grass, enjoyed live entertainment and munched on hot dogs to celebrate the close of the Falls Public Library’s summer reading program.
• The Littlefork Ambulance Service Board and the Littlefork City Council agreed on a rough-draft floor plan for a new ambulance facility, and said that the draft is ready to be reviewed by an architect.
• The city of Big Falls recently took on a new endeavor — opening a restaurant. The 671 Cafe features local antiques for decor and a standard cafe menu of breakfast, burgers and sandwiches.
Wednesday
• The sunshine and seasonably warm temperatures had local children and families spending the final days of summer outside. Some locals were spotted playing at the beach, taking the boat out on Rainy Lake, playing tennis, and even having a neighborhood lemonade stand.
• Derek Fisher bested Andrew Katrin to take the 2009 Men’s Club Championship at the Falls Country Club. A triple bogey on the final hole by Katrin left room for the Mercyhurst College senior to take the win.
• Children learned the science behind super heroes at Camp Invention. They looked at how powers such as morphing or extra strength could be explained scientifically. This was one of many projects that the area students undertook in the areas of science, math, technology and engineering.
Thursday
• Local equestrians saddled up their horses for the 4-H horse show, which determined Koochiching County kids’ placement in the Minnesota State Fair. Events included English and western riding, horse control, as well as games such as egg-and-spoon and barrel racing.
• The Koochiching County Board heard a proposal from the Minnesota Department of Transportation to turn back Highway 332 between Highway 53 and Highway 11 to county control.
• The International Early Iron Car Club recently showed off its classic automobiles at Hardees. The group includes members from both side of the international border.
• Punky Stadum won her 12th Women’s Club Championship at Falls Country Club by narrowly beating Sylvia Cochrane and Martha Karsnia.
Friday
• Camp Kooch-i-ching and its island shores played host to a community picnic on a clear, warm summer evening. Members of the public were treated to supper, games, and the scenery of the camp and surrounding water.
• Minnesota House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher visited International Falls Thursday. Along her travels, she spoke with many community leaders and discussed ways that this area can boost the economy. She also formally signed the papers to declare her gubernatorial candidacy during the trip.
• The Marshall N. Knudson Family Community Fund recently announced $17,000 in gifts to local organizations, such as Citizens for Backus/AB, the Hearing Aid and Assistive Technology Bank, the STRIVE program at Falls High School, Koochiching Aging Options and Icebox Radio Theater.
• Voyageur National Park’s new tour boat, the “Voyageur,” recently was delivered to its home port in International Falls. The 49-passenger boat will soon be reassembled and then launched into Rainy Lake.
