Monday
• Young members of the Rainy River Riders Saddle Club took part in barrel racing last Saturday at the horse arena on Highway 332.
• Boise Inc. announced that it met the New York Stock Exchange minimum share price requirement. The company was notified in November that it had fallen below the minimum share price and market capitalization requirements for listing on the NYSE.
• International Falls set a record-low temperature last weekend, recording a chilly 27 degrees. It breaks a 50-year record for that day.
• In the latest installment of the Johnson Journals, the Johnson’s Birch Point homestead takes shape.
• Four International Falls Broncos athletes competed in the Class A track and field championships. Tim Myles had the best results with an 11th-place finish in the high jump.
• Glenn Walls was the Daily Journal player of the week. Walls finished seventh in the Class 2A state golf tournament last week.

Tuesday
• Marlys Olson found at age 74 that she had talent for water color painting. The Good Samaritan resident said that the new hobby fills her days and makes her life more fulfilling.
• Arro Land Surveyors of Walker, Minn is now capable of completing 3-D laser scans with their new machine. This technology can provide a digital view of real-world objects and expands the surveying company’s repertoire during the difficult economic times.
• The Falls Country Club held the first day of its Junior Golf Clinic. Forty-one children, ages 3-10, learned to drive, pitch, chip and putt. There will be two more camps held later this summer.

Wednesday
• Chico, a 3-year-old German shepherd, has joined the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to aid in finding narcotics. K-9 Enforcement Officer Pete Benedix recently returned from the canine enforcement training in Va. with Chico.
• Jessica Bright has joined The Daily Journal staff as a summer intern and will be learning all aspects of the newspaper business.
• Minnesota’s primary seat belt law went into effect, meaning that all drivers and passengers riding in a vehicle must be buckled. Officers can now stop motorists for this single violation.
• Tuesday Musicale club has announced that it awarded nine full scholarships to area music students. This is the 75th anniversary of the club.
• Rainy River Community College head boys basketball and softball coach Dieter Humbert had eight new recruits on campus this week. The group includes two softball players and six basketball players.

Thursday
• Characters “Alfredo Tortellini” and “Robirda Tweet” entertained children and their families at the Falls Public Library through antics and juggling stunts. Jacob Mills and Nina Cheney, the husband and wife behind the characters, were on hand to kick off the library’s Summer Reading Program for children.
• The Borderland Humane Society is preparing to take over the International Falls pound on July 1. The change in operations was prompted by anticipated budget cuts. The pound handles lost, stray and abused animals.
• The Minnesota State Arts Board and Arrowhead Regional Arts Council will host a public forum in Duluth on July 1 to seek input on how to invest arts funding coming from a new sales tax.
• The Minnesota State High School League’s board has limited travel to those round-trips under 600 miles. The group says that it promotes fairness and will save families and schools money. The board also pushed the golf season back one week next year.

Friday
• As many as 10 blue jays were spotted at a local feeder in May. The birds were involved in a mating process where multiple males try to woo a single female. Also, a photo of a chukar created a mystery around The Daily Journal newsroom. An ecologist at Voyageurs National Park identified the bird which are rarely native to the Northland.
• The Pithers Point lookout tower is being removed from its current location in Fort Frances and will be relocated to La Verendrye Parkway. It will join a historically-significant boat as part of a new attraction.
• The Littlefork City Council adopted a revised ordinance regarding the operation and organization of the Littlefork Ambulance Service. The city is the primary governing agency for the service and the ambulance chief will report to the city administrator. All ambulance service officials must be emergency medical technicians.
• The VFW baseball squad has new patriotic-themed uniforms. The red, white and blue uniforms will honor local veterans and are exciting for the team.
