In order for any kind of charitable campaign to succeed, a wide variety of volunteers and contributors are necessary.

Perhaps that is why Daffodil Days are so successful in Koochiching County — people here know how to step up, reach out and come together to make something happen.

The 2009 campaign raised a total of $9,500, reflecting a 4 percent increase over last year. Much of that success is due to the volunteers in many area businesses who coordinated pre-sale orders, and to the support of those who volunteered during Daffodil Days week to sell the flowers at International Falls, Big Falls, Littlefork and Northome locations. Nearly 900 bunches of daffodils were sold, as well as dozens of Dainty Daffodils (mini-daffodils in a pot) and Boyds’ Collectible Bears.

“All the proceeds from Daffodil Days are used by the American Cancer Society for research, education, advocacy and patient support” stated Stephanie Dremmel, volunteer campaign chair. “I really enjoy watching the daffodils bloom each spring, but when Betsy Loop from the hospital let me know how much the patients enjoyed receiving the Gifts of Hope, that made all the volunteer hours worthwhile.”

Many area residents purchased Gifts of Hope, which were daffodils specially arranged and delivered to cancer patients and their families. “Richmond Floral generously offered their space for assembling orders and flower storage.”

The American Cancer Society has set a goal of reaching 50 percent of newly diagnosed Koochiching residents with patient and caregiver support, such as wigs, prosthetics, medical equipment, free or reduced lodging, patient navigators, the 24-hour support line, Cancer Survivors Network and more. Anyone who needs assistance related to cancer can call 1-800-227-2345 to find help.

Angele Hartell with the American Cancer Society added: “We are grateful to the many volunteers who helped with Daffodil Days, and to all those who purchased flowers. We are especially grateful for the excellent organizational skills Stephanie brings to her volunteer role as chairperson, and that past chairperson Etta Jean Goulet has continued to be involved and so helpful.”
