A free seminar called “Refuse To Be Victim” will be offered Saturday and Sunday at the Backus Auditorium in International Falls.
The seminars are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday. According to instructor Greg Olson, each one-hour seminar will offer slightly different material, making it worthwhile to attend both sessions.
The national personal safety seminar will provide basic tips and concepts, said Olson. Many of the tips are easy and inexpensive. As an example, he pointed to keeping vehicle keys with alarm fobs next to your bed at night. If someone breaks in, Olson urges people to sound the alarm, which will have neighbors calling the police when you may not be able.
The course is geared to all ages and all kinds of people, he said, noting that it is not a weapons or physical self-defense course, although some self-defense tips will be offered.
Instead, the course can be viewed as a preventative measure which will help participants avoid conflict by being alert and aware of their surroundings and then making good choices, according to Olson.
Olson, who is certified by the state, will be available after the sessions to answer questions.
