Army Corps issues permit

» Read similar stories filed under:

The St. Paul district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued a Clean Water Act Section 404 permit to the International Falls-Koochiching County Airport Commission Sept. 14.

The airport commission had previously disputed the need for an Army Corps permit for a maintenance project at the Falls International Airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration told the airport commission in June that an area alongside the runway needed to be smoothed out by Sept. 30 to ensure that if a plane runs off the runway it will be safe.

The Army Corps asserted that the area fell under its jurisdiction because the area was classified as a wetland. The permit authorizes impacts to .80 acres of wetlands within the project area.

The airport commission submitted a permit application to the Army Corps on Aug. 30.

Airport commission member Wade Pavleck said his position is still firm that the Army Corps did not have jurisdiction over the area. But in the interest of moving forward, the commission applied for the permit under the condition that it feels the Army Corps’ permit is not needed, Pavleck said.

YAY! Way to go Army Corps! I knew that you would come through for International Falls and our Airport. WOOHOO!!!!

*/end sarcasm*

Seriously. Lets think about this. The future of the ENTIRE airport, was held up by these chuckle heads - over eight tenths of ONE acre of land. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!

I hate to say it - but someone in that organization needs to learn, hijack, or steal some common sense when dealing with wetland issues.

What's next? I can just see the future now...

"I. Falls Men's Gardening Club fined for unpermitted expansion of garden"

An Army Corps Representative is quoted as saying, "They have been fined, and we are seeking possible jail time for an unauthorized impact of 2 square feet of wetland in the International Falls area." End quote.

Ok - school's in session:

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution is a part of the United States Bill of Rights. It prohibits the federal legislature from making laws that infringe the freedom of speech, infringe the freedom of the press, limit the right to assemble peaceably, or limit the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

It's issues such as this - that we need to exercise our First Amendment rights - and let the government know that we aren't going to stand for a lack of common sense anymore.

The airport commission was...

The airport commission was right when it thought about fighting the stupidity(wetlands and other rules) that exists in the state and federal government. This was in regard to an area on the side of the runway that even after 2 inches of rain, remained dry enough to drive a van through without signs of any rut from the tires. This coming from a member of the airport commission. But according to the Army Corp, it is a main tributary to the Rainy River. Too scary to contemplate! These problems are caused because some people think they have all this power and can and do make arbitrary decisions that negativly affect our area. It, however was the wrong time to fight the right fight, but that time is coming. We must try and curtail some of this insanity from un-elected bureaucrats.
