Helmi Bjorum, 93, Two Harbors, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009 at the Sunrise Home.

She was born March 18, 1916 to Oscar and Aliina (Williams) Aho in Eveleth, where she grew up and graduated from Eveleth High School at the age of 16 years.

She attended Duluth State Teachers College (UMD) and graduated with a teaching degree. She taught in Montana for three years until moving to Two Harbors in 1937.

She married Henry Bjorum on March 8, 1941.

She resumed teaching first grade for Lake Superior School District in 1952 and until retiring in 1979.

She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Two Harbors.

She truly enjoyed their cabin at Kane Lake, gardening and bird watching.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 60 years, Henry; and sister, Taimi Niemi.

Curly is survived by her sons, Richard (Pat) of International Falls and Robert of Biwabik; sister, Laimi Niemi of St. Paul; granddaughters, Elissa Bjorum of Sitka, Alaska and Erika (Daniel Ungier) Bjorum of Covallis, Ore., four step grandchildren, Boyd Etter (Sheryl), LaRee Etter, Bredon (Ann) and Patrick (Kristen), eight step great-grandchildren; sisters-in law, Ena Kulas of Duluth and Phyllis Bjorum of Spring Hill, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

Gathering of family and friends will take place one hour before the 11 a.m. service Friday, Oct. 9, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
