Paul MacDonald Shaw passed away Sunday, July 20, 2008.
Born Jan. 13, 1926, to Robert and Lillian Shaw in Henning, Minn., Paul was raised from early childhood in International Falls with his four brothers and sisters.
After an early graduation from high school, Paul joined the navy in 1943 and served until his discharge in 1946, when he returned to the University of Minnesota to attend law school, graduating in 1949.
He was married to Beverly McCord in 1949. The couple moved to Deer River in 1950 where Paul set up his law practice, which he maintained for the next 54 years.
Raised in an adventurous family and never able to sit still for long, Paul was an avid outdoorsman and in constant motion. Hunting, fishing, camping, backpacking, and traveling the world over, he would no sooner recover from one outing when he would start planning the next.
He and brother David Shaw of Grand Rapids were two of the 10 founding members of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association.
He was proud to be a member of the Deer River community and the Deer River Lions Club for over 50 years and also of his work (and that of many others) in the 1950s which resulted in the beginning of the Community Memorial Hospital of Deer River.
He was a good friend to many, and it was a life well lived.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Beverly and his brother David.
He is survived by brother Robert Shaw of Edina and sisters Kathryn (James) Martin of Edina and Jessie (Ronald) Laurion of International Falls, daughter Susan (Roland) Nyberg of Colorado Springs, daughter Nancy Shaw of Deer River, son Andrew (Paula) Shaw of Deer River, daughter Laura (Patrick) Schnobrich of Hermantown, son Peter (Tammy) Shaw of Fargo, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service was conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at Bethany Lutheran Church of Deer River.
A fund has been established in Paul’s memory at Backus Community Center. Contributions will be used for refurbishing the auditorium.
