City should vacate road

» Read similar stories filed under:

The findings of the Burner Road Task Force clearly support vacation by the city of a portion of Highway 332 known as the Burner Road.

We urge the International Falls City Council to approve a request by Boise Cascade to vacate the Burner Road based on a number of findings included in the task force's report. Those findings involve, most importantly, improving safety, and transportation efficiency for the company.

The other part of the equation _ construction of a new northern entrance to Highway 332 _ should wait. Vacation of the Burner Road may provide clear direction to the city about how to proceed on that matter.

The task force, made up of 14 members who were assisted by five support staff, was created to consider all factors, including the potential impact to Highway 53 businesses, of the vacation and possible rerouting of Highway 332. It appears the task force took its charge seriously and provided a detailed view of the issue.

Among the findings of the task force was agreement that the existing use of the Burner Road causes a safety problem. In addition, the findings noted that realignment of Highway 332 would improve safety by reducing the amount of sharp turns in the road that must be negotiated by truck and other traffic and by eliminating public traffic on the Burner Road.

The findings also noted that completion of the project would benefit heavy equipment contractors in the area, as well as improve economic efficiency by eliminating the need for heavy equipment to wait on traffic while crossing the Burner Road.

And Highway 53 merchants were consulted. The findings said most support vacation of the Burner Road, provided a reroute of the northern entrance of Highway 332 would not result in loss of customer traffic on Highway 53. Those merchants also believe that a reroute of Highway 332 further east than originally proposed to allow access to a foreign trade zone would not result in further loss of vehicle traffic on Highway 53.

The council should acknowledge the findings in the report and take a first step in improving safety and efficiency by approving the vacation request. After that, it has the responsibility to consider the rest of the report as the community adapts to the traffic changes resulting from the vacation.

City Should Not Vacate

The findings of the Task Force DO NOT support vacating the Burner Road. The findings claim today as was claimed a year ago, that there exists a safety hazard from truck traffic on the 332 AND the Burner road. Neither has been substantiated by study or in fact. In fact, the Mayor Herself states no consensus was reached in the study. In either case, if there was an unfounded worry, then that worry has now been alleviated and is now obviously mute, as the trucks will now be leaving 332 and entering Boise property 1/2 mile to the east of the Burner road. Those trucks will now procede to the pulp storage yard, by a road that Boise can and will make with their own monies, not ours. In addittion, there will be no alleged safty issue with trucks crossing the Burner road because Boise will either build an "Overpass" on the Burner road to alleviate the alleged problem because thats what the "new" law enforcement is going to recomend to a court hearing on the safty issue OR the Boise chip piles and entire operation will be moved to the east, on the Boise property it already owns and where the pulp was originally stored. This is going to be done because Mayor Mason and the entire city council is going to declare the entire mess as un sightly and not in the best interest of Internationa Falls beautification program. That includes the removal of the trucks parked on the river where the old burner and sawmill buildings used to stand. This is the finding of my Task Force.Lastly we as tax payers are not interested in Boise, "what ever it is called today" paper company and its efficient movement of wood, thats their problem. Did anybody, also, now notice that the next scam their trying to pull on you is their not even wanting to even build a new road to the east, now why did we ever think they would pull that stunt?? Why did we never even think that they would try to appease the apparently stupid business owners on Hwy 53, by telling them not to worry, we won't build any road to allow development of business that might hurt you from 332 to Hwy 11? Furthermore, that miniscule company, that only employs 850 workers, is no longer a force to be reckoned with. It is the primary problem in this town, not its solution and has been the primary problem for 30 years. Its getting worse not better. Yes, for a hundred workers or so, its a problem, but for the city itself the mill is now a hindrence to further development in this area. Its time to go in another direction as no miniscule employer like that, has any longer a hold on the other 25,000 residents or more in this county and area. The first step the mayor and city council can take is to "force" entry 1/2 mile east of the burner road. The second step the council can take is force movement of the chip piles or an overpass on the burner road. The third step mayor Mason and the city council can take is build the new access road to 2nd Bridge as they deem necessary AND keep the burner road. The last step Mayor Mason and the city council can take is force the closure of two machines to reduce even further the silly rantings of a now insignificant bankers holding company, which is enevitably going to eventually shut down two machines anyway. As I mentioned before, put it to a vote of the people in this area, not just a vote of the city council who all are in bed with something they just can't resist or a vote of the people will vote every last one of you out of office. Being kicked out rather then leaving on your own terms is going to stay with you for your entire existence in a small town like this, I think I can assure you. 1000 plus votes the last time should have been enough to not even warrent a silly task force, this time the vote will be even higher, 2000 or more. Wake up, thats a mandate of the citizens of this area. A silly task force or the opinions of the mayor and the city council or the mill, or the chamber is not what the local folks here want to hear. Besides, what business is it of the chamber, or a white haired personal representative of the company to even sit or have a say in the decision of the task force? Thats the same as allowing the crimanal to sit on his own jury to decide his own fate.

No matter what the city council says, no matter what a task force says, no matter what Boise wants.....The people have already said, right or wrong, the people have already said...we are not going to give that company the Burner road. Come to any conclusion you want, the people do not want to give up the Burner Road..how much more or in what other way do we have to say this?? I am preparing a legal arguement now, to do more then overturn the councils decision and more with reards to other land transfers that have gone on with that white haired representative of that company, if they give away our road. Its not your decision city council its our decision and our land not yours. We are not wanting to give up our road or ANY MORE land to that company or anybody else. I am not even sure that a city council, acting as the elected representative of the people in this case, can act as an agent for the people and give up our land, without a vote of the taxpayers. If I find even one private conversation between anybody on the council and anybody acting for that company I will have you charged with racketeering in addition.

Yes. But of course the land transfer in at least one case was smoothed over by re-transferring the land to his daughter, was it not? Now who owned the land in the first place, a few years ago?? Very well put, I hope that this will help, but as we all know city government does not listen to its town people they do what they want. It would be great to see your comment put in the next eddition of the Daily Journal paper, but that would be to much to ask. P.S. Have a happy Holiday from mine to yours A.O.as we are closer than you maybe aware of.

Thanks night_owl. I packed the car last night but will stay around the room here for a while. Have a very Merry Christmas to you and your family as well. I think I can overturn the harm that the chamber did last spring and summer with making the attempt to change the minds of the businesses on Hwy 53. When you loose your tire business or loose your restruant or repair shop because everybody is going to the "new" shops on 332, that is a convincing arguement. The ploy to pretend that no new road will be built immediately was just a ploy to get those Hwy 53 votes. I think 3000 or more votes this time and a complete boycott of anybody or there businesses that support this "give away" will be convincing also. See you pal. Have a nice holidays.

Daily Journal----why are you...

Back to page top

Daily Journal----why are you backing Boise? Read what Anton65 has stated. The mayor herself stated that they was no agreement. Boise is the one that has to make things safe let them take on that responsibility, let them spend the big bucks to do so. The reasoning of sharp turns and stops would be eliminated makes me laugh. These slow the trucks down to a safer speed. Don't you hear the people as to what they have to say about their property? What about the semis that come thro downtown and cars have to back up so they can make the turn? Nothing is done with that and it happens all the time. Yesterday a tanker backed across hwy 53 blocking traffic so it could turn this was at 10th st. It was mentioned before about the wood piles at Orsi that could roll right out unto the hwy. Nothing to stop them and it is still as unsafe as it was brought out this spring in the beautification blog this spring. You taking a stand with Boise makes me sick. Why haven't you stated your opinion on the hospital situation? Are you too in Boise's pocket? Why not keep your mouth shut like you do on soooo many other issues?

Back to page top

We'll see what kind of mettle and fiber our Daily Journal is made of shortly. There just another "business" that requires revenue just like everybody else. Gas stations, clothing stores, restraunts, even government taxes are all suspect when you find yourself in bed with the wrong person. On the other hand if the folks in South Falls and elsewhere in town want to capitulate and "give" this road to the company, then that too, is the peoples decision. I am more interested in just what the people do here, rather then in the specific outcome.

Back to page top

Since the Journal supports vacating this road, what is their idea on keeping the kids playing at Carson Lupie Playground safe. I think Anton's right, the road should be moved 1/2 a mile from the Burner Road. The kids would be safer and not sucking in all the emissions shooting out of those big trucks. Do the kids mean anything or is the Journal in support of closing down the playground so Boise can win because that's what it's about, that and saving a few of their big bucks on road construction by not constructing a new road of their own. If it truly were about safety, I haven't yet heard them comment on the playground or people residing in that area and their safety. What they care about is simply money, nothing more. How many of the people supporting this and sitting on this Task Force live in that area or take their kids to play at Carson Lupie.

MamaG I believe you are wrong. They want the burner road where 332 comes out across from Carson Lupie Playground all the way to the weigh station, that is my understanding.

That is correct, They want...

Back to page top

That is correct, They want the entire "burner road" from 332 to Hwy 11. The value of this road is the value of the land, the value of the road bed, the value of the pavement, the value of the cost to the city to replace the roadbed and pavement and the most important value is the value to the company to not have to be moved to their property further to the east with the movement of the pulp storage and chip 0perations. There is an additional cost to the city and county and I might add, directly to the Daily Journal, in the cost to find a way to appease the current business owners who will loose business and some to loose their entire business. Look at the Sheridan Motors problem that could exist. Why would someone from Cook buy that business to put a GMC dealership when they can put the dealership on Hwy 332?? Right or wrong, good business or bad, these businesses have to be appeased also and that is a further cost. Who is going to stay at an old motel and one they can't even now see, or at Arnold's camp ground they worked so hard at building when now they are by passing it. six-shooter is also correct in his assesment of the profitability of the company or lack of. That 1/4 mile of road has absolutly nothing to do with profitability of that bank holding company, none whatsoever. Even the movement of the entire chip and pulp storage operation further to the east has absolutly nothing to do with that bank holding companys profitability. Its an attempt to "package" the property for somebody else to buy. Holding companys do not run paper mills or anything else either. They "hold" property until they can "dump" it to somebody and "dump" it anyway they can, and the best and most profitable way to dump the property is to bust it up, even into individual pieces of "real" property and "industrial" equipment to be sold as quicky as possible to whomever they can. Don't get addicted to this drug, let it go!! Find a new and better direction to go in for yourself and for your children. This is our town, not "Boise Town". This is the town we want our children to stay in for a reason and our grandchildren and we are not for sale to anybody out side of town nor are we for sale to anybody in town that does not support our way of life. If you don't like how we want to live with decency, then "you" go find yourself another place to sleep, this is our home.

Back to page top

MamaG, I almost forgot to answer your queston. I retired 15 years ago. I run bank holding companys. I buy up big property from idiots and poor slobs that need help in little towns all over America that can't do a thing to stop me because I know before I even get there that they don't have the stomach to stop me. I buy these properties for a song and a dance and very d**m litle song and a dance I might add. Then I break them up into little properties that I inflate the price on to make a big profit from silly greedy little hucksters that think they know something about business that I don't. Then I leave the miserable little creatures wallowing in debt while I go on to the next little American town on the fading landscape knowing full well that Asia can do the job cheaper. I am particularily fond of towns that have not the guts nor ability to have even made any plans for there own future as these are the easy towns to rape. I look real pretty and dress real nice and of course I always smile. This generally is all it takes. Sometimes I even come back to the poor miserable little hucksters and offer to take back the property for an even lower price then I was involved in earlier. Sometimes, I am even approached by the silly, babbling idiots to just take the property I had sold them, and take it for free, which I do, of course. But never do I take their lives and property for free unless they first kiss my boots. Get the picture yet??? Lucky thing I have been retired for 15 years, isn't it?? Besides, this is a nice little town that I call home, just like you do. Don't worry MamaG, if I buy #1 and #2 machines, I'll make sure there is a job for you somewhere, just for old times sake! If you want I could buy you 35 feet of hot rope and find a tall elm tree some where in town I am sure. There used to be some good elm trees on 7th street. Remember, all the while you read this, think of me and my big smile. If thats all it takes to make you feel nice and comfortable about your future and whats happening to our town, just think about that nice big smille. If it ain't me, it will be someone laughing all the way to the bank.
