Sen. John McCain is the right choice for United States president.
While we don’t love everything about McCain, we do believe that his leadership and policies will take the country toward a stable economic future at home and a sensible foreign policy abroad.
It’s time for significant change, not the sweeping change that Sen. Barack Obama is seeking. While Obama has strengths, McCain represents the right kind of change from which Americans will benefit. McCain also brings independence and a track record of crossing party lines for the good of the country.
Clearly, McCain’s economic plan, which involves cutting taxes and freezing government spending, stands out among the candidates. His plan will allow Americans to keep more of their money through tax cuts. And middle class Americans know better how to spend their money than the government does. Increasing taxes on the most successful Americans and corporations, as proposed by Obama, and distributing it to others will simply not create wealth. Instead, it will bring work force reductions and decreases in company profit sharing and capital investments. That is not what America needs today.
And McCain could go far to serve as a strong check and balance for some of the more liberal voices, such as Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
His experience, both as a veteran member of congress and as a POW, has brought him wisdom that his opponent may never gain.
What we don’t like about McCain has surfaced just in recent months. He has waged a campaign that has tolerated rumor mongering and his selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for a running mate was a faulty strategic move.
That said, McCain remains the better candidate for moving America into the future.
Friday, The Journal’s picks for U.S. Senate and House, and Minnesota House.

Back to page topSchmitty53,
I thought I had died and gone to heaven, when I read that endorsement. I paid them $5,000 to write that (just kidding). If I ever said anything bad about the DJ, I now take it back. It was so nice to see and read, some real common sense, FOR ONCE! They were (as some would say), "SPOT ON"!! Thank you Daily Journal for making some of us believe that "the system" is not completely broken.

Back to page toproj2000, I view the DJ sorta like "Joe the Plumber". Neither one can afford to spread the wealth around or have additional taxes levied on them. But I will raise a glass this evening and toast their decision. The sad way things are shaping up I might as well enjoy this now, for who knows what's coming next. That $5,000 you sent in sure didn't hurt either and I thank you for that(not kidding). BTW (not that this is instant messenger) did you receive my email?
McCain's maverick reputation...
Back to page topMcCain's maverick reputation is a carefully crafted image, but the real John McCain has emerged in his run for the presidency. Although he acts as though he offers something different from Bush, he promotes the same reckless policies that have led to this low point in our nation's history.
Moreover, he's embraced the politics of personal destruction that he once claimed to detest. As the Biblical book of James so eloquently states, we're known by our deeds not just our words.
As for his judgment, one need only look at McCain's selection of Sarah Palin for vice president — a choice so disturbing that it helped sway many Republicans, including Colin Powell, to endorse Obama. Even the Chicago Tribune, which can usually be counted on to back Republicans, supported Obama over McCain.
It's disappointing that The Daily Journal bought into Republican claims that Obama's policies represent a radical shift in the tax structure. In reality, he has called for a return to a tax schedule in place during the Clinton years, when this country was actually prospering. Under Bush, the country's wealthiest citizens have seen the greatest gains while the middle class (a rapidly disappearing segment) has lost ground.
McCain's proposal would continue that trend by reserving the largest tax cuts for the wealthiest. An analysis of the candidates' tax proposals by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center shows that, under McCain's proposals, those earning above $2.87 million would see their taxes fall by about 4.4 percent while the middle class ($37,596 to $66,354) would get less than a one-percent reduction in taxes. By contrast, Obama would increase taxes on the top tier by 11.5 percent but reduce those for the middle class by 2.4 percent. Most Americans would see taxes decrease or stay the same under Obama, so a very small percentage of the country would see taxes rise.
Some will argue that increasing taxes for the rich discourages the incentive to succeed and believers in trickle-down economics will protest that it stalls economic growth, but there's no evidence to support such claims. Bush boasted that his tax cuts were going to revitalize the economy, but the proof is in the pudding (or in your latest 401k statement).
The Journal touts McCain's experience in supporting him for president, but years in office don't always translate into wisdom. Lincoln had little experience in federal office when he became president, but is still revered as one of our wisest leaders.
A good share of that wisdom was Lincoln's willingness to hear dissenting views and take them into consideration as he developed a plan of action. Those same qualities have impressed Obama's supporters, who say he is willing to listen to all sides of an issue.
It's well known that McCain has a temper and he has written that he has often made decisions in haste and paid the consequences. That may be fine in his personal life, but if the country has to pay the price for his rashness, it's another matter.
Given the facts, I must respectfully disagree with the Journal's endorsement of McCain.

Back to page topThank you! I couldn't have said it better or more eloquently.
I thought the journal just posted an editorial on Tuesday that said they weren't taking a stance nor would they be printing any more letters to the editor in regards to the elections because no one would have time to respond and get printed.
It's almost 7, I'm off to watch our future President!
Ahhh, roj! Believe it or...
Back to page topAhhh, roj! Believe it or not, I am actually voting for some Repubs this election! It will be interesting to see which color the state turns, either way, it is going to be a rollercoaster of an election and I find it exciting and fascinating! It's an exciting time for our Country!
It's funny you bring up the tax breaks, McCain has a big tax break too - it's for Fortune 500 companies in the sum of $700,000 - so does that make McCain a socialist too? Hmmmm, Obama is one for fighting for a diminishing middle class and McCain likes to make sure the wealthy stay that way. Isn't that what you Southerners like to say is the "pot calling the kettle black?" LOL
I never liked Palin, she was to round up the extreme right, Repub base - you and I both are educated enough to figure that one out. She's done her job as far as getting the far right on the McCain bandwagon. McCain had to add her to cover himself - you know he almost went Dem in 2000, it's well documented.
I have the utmost respect for McCain and his service to our Country, but that doesn't give him a free ticket to the White House in my opinion. From everything I have read, until his time as a POW he was a mediocre sailor - almost got kicked out of the Naval academy more than once for his hot temper. I've done a lot of reading on your buddy, McCain. I've done my homework.
How about we agree to disagree on this one?
lesleyk, if your reading has...
Back to page toplesleyk, if your reading has included economics and virtually any business model, then you know that corporations don't pay taxes. For the greatest part corporations simply add the tax cost to the production costs and we pay the taxes when we (the middle class) buy the goods. Increasing or decreasing corporate taxes make the business less competitive or allow them to be more competitive in the global market place.
Deserve Success

Back to page topIt's an exciting time for our Country????? Just where have you been? Read a newspaper lately, like this one? And just what did Obama do that you are willing to give him a totally free pass to that chair? Please let us all know what your "Homework" consisted of and where you did it and just what swayed you to his side lesleyk. I do my homework too and I'm just a little curious in your decision and why. And now is not the time to let anything but fear hold you back. You know who I'm voting for and I certainly haven't held anything back here, so PLEASE let us know your reasons......or do I already? You tell me. Let it all hang out for a "CHANGE"!
Yes, it is an exciting time....
Back to page topYes, it is an exciting time. It's time for younger generations to take the reins, it's time for my generation to step up to the plate. The Country is at a low point right now, yes, but now's the time when we need to come together. We live in a great country, and I find our present day challenges just that challenges. I don't think they are going to keep us down but make us better.
"Trials teach us what we are; they dig up the soil, and let us see what we are made of; they just turn up some of the ill weeds on to the surface."
"God prepares great men for great tasks by great trials."
"Life's challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they're supposed to help you discover who you are."
"There are no great men, only great challenges that ordinary men are forced by circumstances to meet."
"Challenges can be stepping stones or stumbling blocks. It's just a matter of how you view them."
That's how I choose to see the present situation. I don't appreciate the doom and gloom nor the "If Obama becomes President" scare tactics. Even McCain said Obama is a good man and you have nothing to fear!

Back to page topAnd I forgot to mention that newshound is a regular poster in the MPLS, Star and Tribune (and you can check it out) always stumping for one single issue, that being the gay lifestyle. I've always found it curious how someone votes for a candidate solely based on their own lifestyle. A choice like that is nothing short of self-serving and does nothing to help this country... never has and never will!

Back to page topOoohhhh, so if you vote for a candidate that supports gays havign the same rights we do, that's self-serving? But being pro-life isn't??? Isn't pro-life how you personally interpret abortion based on your religious views? Just like how people personally interpret their sexuallity? Both personal decisions that neither of us has any right to judge.
God gave us ALL a free will. Sins arent counted on a point system, you do realize that, right? I'm no better than anyone else just because I'm a heterosexual; neither am I any better because I chose to give birth to my four children. Seriously, Schmitty? You're going to judge someone on their orientation versus their character because he's an Obama supporter?

Back to page topGotta love it!!!! When the debate gets heated, and some "minor" [honest] comments are thrown around on here, the "LIBERALS" like to haul out the old "censor" button!! Remember, Freedom of Speech ONLY applies to the Liberals. They can't "HANDLE THE TRUTH", so they run to "big daddy" Daily Journal censors and see if us "right wingers" can be silenced! It's OK for them to preach love for the sinners [offense title's removed], but God forbid if a decent War Hero (McCain) wants to use his past to further his campaign. So, on Jan 20, 2009, the great Rev Wright will be singing to ALL gathered; "God Da** America, God Da** America", we're "coming home" to roost!! I do agree that some writers on here are commenting under more than one "Avatar". Some are trying (and able) to do just that, but I think I would have a hard time getting away with that!! LOL.... As Rev Wright would say, "IT SICKENS"!!

Back to page topWhy do some bloggers find it necessary to label others instead of simply sticking to the issues? I don't advocate censorship but do think that common courtesy and honesty should be requirements for reasonable debate. I'm only requesting that the newspaper abide by its own rules that state that false or misleading and abusive posts will be banned. Can't we just agree to disagree without getting personal or vindictive?
